Norton The Time Machine A1005951938
Norton The Time Machine A1005951938
Intrigued by the possibilities of time travel as a student and inspired as a journalist by the great scientific advances of the Victorian Age, Wells drew on his own scientific publications-on evolution, degeneration, species extinction, geologic time, and biology-in writing The Time Machine. This Norton Critical Edition is based on the first London edition of the novel. It is accompanied by detailed explanatory annotations and "A Note on the Text." "Backgrounds and Contexts" is organized thematically into four sections: "The Evolution of The Time Machine" presents alternative versions and installments and excerpts of the author's time-travel story; "Wells's Scientific Journalism (1891-94)" focuses on the scientific topics central to the novel; "Wells on The Time Machine" reprints the prefaces to the 1924, 1931, and 1934 editions; and "Scientific and Social Contexts" collects five widely read texts by the Victorian scientists and social critics Edwin Ray Lankester, Thomas Henry Huxley, Benjamin Kidd, William Thomson (Lord Kelvin), and Balfour Stewart and Peter Guthrie Tait. "Criticism" includes three important early reviews of The Time Machine from the Spectator, the Daily Chronicle, and Pall Mall Magazine as well as eight critical essays that reflect our changing emphases in reading and appreciating this futuristic novel. Contributors include Yevgeny Zamyatin, Bernard Bergonzi, Kathryn Hume, Elaine Showalter, John Huntington, Paul A. Cantor and Peter Hufnagel, Colin Manlove, and Roger Luckhurst. A Chronology and Selected Bibliography are also included.

Brill The Re-Emergence of Values in Science Education A1004836941
Brill The Re-Emergence of Values in Science Education A1004836941
Issues relating to values have always had a place in the school science curriculum. Sometimes this has been only in terms of the inclusion of topics such as 'the nature of science' and/or 'scientific method' and/or particular intentions for laboratory work that relate to 'scientific method.'sometimes it has been much broader, for example in curricula with STS emphases. Of importance to aspects of this proposal is that different countries/cultures have had different traditions in terms of the place of values in the school [science] curriculum. One obvious very broad difference of this form is the central place in [science] education thinking in many European countries of bildung, and the complete absence of this construct from most [science] curriculum thinking in English speaking contexts. There are numbers of such country/cultural differences. In the 1990s many countries moved towards various conceptualizations of Outcomes Based Education - OBE (sometimes so labelled and sometimes not). It was usual (but not universal) for OBE focused science curricula to have constrained views of the values that should be implicit and explicit in curriculum; that is views concerned only with 'the nature of science' and 'scientific method' (both usually seen as quite unproblematic). Currently there are a number of education systems that are changing again, and choosing to move away from Outcomes Based Education (for example, South Africa and several Australian states). One of the most interesting features of many of these movements is the re-embracing of a wider view of the science curriculum, including a reconsideration of the nature and place of the values associated with science in the purposes for and approaches to science education.

Peter Lang Sigmund Freud A1071509715
Peter Lang Sigmund Freud A1071509715
Sigmund Freud's theories and clinical practices focused primarily on individuals. As such, they are rarely considered when critiquing collective behavior or symbolic re-presentations. However, as the founder of depth psychology - a field of study that considers how unconscious components of the human experience influence psychological conditions - Freud understood the collective nature of thought and behavior. While his ideas are not typically a perspective applied to the study of media and popular culture, of audiences, or of content creation, once unpacked through a psychoanalytic lens, Freud's theories shine a bright light on human motivation and expression. This book is the first presentation of his ideas within this context. It is primarily an introduction to Freud and his theories intended for a communication studies audience. In addition to summarizing Freud's major concepts, how/when/if they are taught in psychology programs, and the resultant "Freud Wars," this book offers examples of application of his ideas to cinema, advertising, public relations, and other forms of expression and recommendations for future research. There are implications and applications to the everyday world as well for anyone interested in how theories of human development, beginning with childhood personality construction through adult sexuality, repression, and expression, can be understood through a contemporary lens. "Of all of the contentious and oft-misconstrued figures in the history of ideas, few provide such a thorny and frustrating subject as Sigmund Freud. In this short-butsubstantial book, Deb Merskin gives us a considerate and approachable understanding of Freud's work. She begins with a biographical sketch of Freud, builds on this foundation to outline the full spectrum of Freud's theoretical interventions. With the basic rhythms and motifs established, Merskin then combines all of these elements to develop a symphonic sense of what Freud's ideas can contribute to communication and media studies, with emphases on social theory, film theory, advertising, political communication, media psychology, and cultural studies. Here is a true introduction to Freud's ideas as they relate to communication and media studies." -David W. Park, Lake Forest College

Reichert, L Die Kniga palomnik des Antonij von Novgorod A1057658730
Reichert, L Die Kniga palomnik des Antonij von Novgorod A1057658730
The Kniga Palomnik, a pilgrim report written in 1200 by the Russian pilgrim Dobrynja Jadrejkovič (the future Archbishop Anthony of Novgorod) is known as the most detailed and, at the same time, most confusing description of the sacred places and relics of Constantinople on the eve of its plunder in 1204. The text, which is preserved in manuscript miscellanies from the 16th-18th century, however, is only known from a Russian edition prepared in 1899, which was based on about half of the manuscripts known today and hence provides a distorted image of the author as somebody whose confusing travel notes emerge from a fading memory, leading to a dislocation of churches and a contamination of travelling routes. This work provides a new commented critical edition of the text. It opposes the entrenched scientific opinion regarding the number of the text‘s redactions, its dissemination or the time and date of its record. Moreover, it shows how the author’s reputedly confused modus operandi might be untangled by taking into consideration the whole manuscript tradition and the text structure. His report can hence be considered as an authoritative historical source. With its layout, the edition addresses a broader circle of recipients than it is customary for historical-critical editions. The manuscript text is presented unchanged (although accompanied by a critical apparatus). It is, however, confronted with its (German) translation, which at the same time is a reconstruction and reinterpretation of the text. The detailed explanation of the provided reconstruction proposals is to be found in the commentary which precedes the edition. The transparency of actual transmission and hypothetical reconstruction is ensured by various typographical emphases. It is thus possible to read the text in the translation as it was presumably intended by the author, and at the same time to retrace the editor's text-critical decision by concidering the given complete and authentic textual tradition. Therefore, from the philological point of view, the edition offers a new text basis for further research into the characteristics, the transmission and reception of Russian pilgrim literature; and from the historical and archaeological perspective, it provides access to a textual source which is crucial for the reconstruction of the sacred topography of the former Byzantine capital.

GRIN Selected Narrative Techniques in James Joyce's 'A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man' A1008201672
GRIN Selected Narrative Techniques in James Joyce's 'A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man' A1008201672
Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject Didactics - English - Literature, Works, grade: 1,7, University of Münster, language: English, abstract: In James Joyce¿s novel "A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man" a variety of narrative techniques is used. In this research paper I want to explore how the use of different narrative techniques correlates with and indicates the protagonist¿s development towards both an artist and an autonomous adult. Except of the concluding diary entries, the novel is narrated by a third-person narrator who has got a limited point of view since he is focalized through Stephen. The narrator presents Stephen¿s consciousness and activities in various ways; an important aspect about his narration is that he persistently adapts his style to Stephen¿s idiom and mood. In some passages the narrator reports almost objectively on events, however, often he renders Stephen¿s consciousness, for which he uses different narrative techniques. Since Dorrit Cohn is thought to be one of the most important researchers on the field of narrative techniques concerning the presentation of consciousness, I will base this research paper on her definitions. Cohn distinguishes three ways a third-person narrator can use for rendering a person¿s consciousness: psycho-narration, narrated monologue and quoted interior monologue, all of which are used in the novel. I will focus on psycho-narration and narrated monologue since these are the techniques predominantly used. Psycho- narration is the narrator¿s description of a character¿s thoughts and feelings, thus, it is the most indirect way of rendering a character¿s consciousness. The third-person reference and the tense of narration are maintained. The presence of a narrator is marked since a verbum dicendi is always used. Narrated monologue uses the third person singular and the preterite as well; however, at the same time the syntactical structure remains that of direct discourse with exclamations, questions, repetitions, interjections and exaggerated emphases. The effect of narrated monologue is to reduce as far as possible the distance between the narrator and the character existing in all third person narrations. Since psycho- narration and narrated monologue use a third-person narrator and the same time span, the two techniques can alternate without perceptible transitions. As a result, the narrator can weave in and out of the character¿s thoughts and the distance between narrator and character can be eliminated.

Bloomsbury Understanding Pride and Prejudice A1005941687
Bloomsbury Understanding Pride and Prejudice A1005941687
This is the only book about Pride and Prejudice to combine both analysis of the novel and excerpts from significant primary documents of Austen's own time. These materials will help the reader to understand the complexities of both the novel and English society at the beginning of the 19th century, and to compare those issues to contemporary society. Teachman provides commentary and primary materials on inheritance, marriage, and women's roles in society at the time of Austen's life. Excerpts from 18th- and 19th-century etiquette books, moral treatises, histories of women, legal documents and commentary, newspapers, magazines, and collections of letters provide evidence of the social and legal differences between Austen's time and our own-enabling the reader to understand the legal, historical, social, and cultural context of the novel. Each section of this casebook contains study questions, topics for research papers and class discussions, and lists of further reading for examining the issues raised by the novel. The plot of Pride and Prejudice turns on three aspects of early 19th-century English society: marriage as a social institution, inheritance laws and customs, and acceptable roles for women. Following a literary analysis of the novel, the casebook contains documents and commentary on the following topics: inheritance and marriage laws and customs, 18th-century views on marriage, the status of unmarried women, women's education and moral training, and issues in the 1980s and 1990s that can be contrasted with those in the novel. These documents illustrate the social and legal differences between Austen's time and our own that enable the reader to fully understand the archaic details of the novel. They also indicate the continuities between Austen's time and ours in their emphases on love, marriage, the importance of property, and arguments about the role of women. Among the documents are excerpts from Samuel Johnson, Daniel Defoe, William Godwin, Mary Wollstonecraft, advice from a mother to her absent daughters, and a number of letters on the proper role of women, their education, and moral training. The final chapter of this book brings into focus the relevancies of Austen's fiction to present day readers and provides discussion of many of the issues of the novel as they are handled by law and the media at the end of the 20th century. This is an ideal companion for teacher use and student research in interdisciplinary, English history, and English literature courses.

Whitestone Media Isaiah A1035474331
Whitestone Media Isaiah A1035474331
The Book of Isaiah is a cornerstone of the Hebrew Bible and the Christian Old Testament, comprising 66 chapters that blend prophecy, poetry, and narrative to deliver a powerful message of judgment, consolation, and hope. Traditionally attributed to the prophet Isaiah, his ministry spanned the 8th century BCE in the Kingdom of Judah, during a tumultuous period that saw the rise and fall of neighboring empires and the eventual exile of the Jewish people. **Structure and Themes of Isaiah:** The book is commonly divided into two or three major sections, each reflecting different historical contexts and theological emphases: 1. **Chapters 1-39 (First Isaiah or Proto-Isaiah):** This section is attributed to Isaiah of Jerusalem and focuses on the imminent threat of Assyrian invasion. It combines oracles of judgment against Judah and Jerusalem for their social injustices and idolatry with messages of hope and divine promise for the future. Notable passages include the vision of the holy God in the Temple (chapter 6), the Immanuel prophecy (chapter 7), and the vision of universal peace from the "shoot from the stump of Jesse" (chapter 11). 2. **Chapters 40-55 (Second Isaiah or Deutero-Isaiah):** Often dated to the end of the Babylonian exile (late 6th century BCE), this section offers words of comfort and hope to the exiled Jewish community. It speaks of a new exodus led by God, who will redeem His people and return them to Jerusalem. Central to this section are the Servant Songs, which describe a mysterious "Servant of the Lord" who will suffer for the sins of the people yet bring about their redemption. 3. **Chapters 56-66 (Third Isaiah or Trito-Isaiah):** This final section addresses the challenges of the post-exilic community in Jerusalem, encouraging them to remain faithful to God's laws and envisioning a future where all nations will join Israel in worshiping the one true God. It emphasizes themes of justice, Sabbath observance, and the inclusion of foreigners and eunuchs into God's covenant. **Key Themes:** - **The Holiness of God:** Isaiah emphasizes the transcendence and holiness of God, calling people to repentance and purity of worship. - **Judgment and Hope:** The book oscillates between stark judgments against sin and glorious visions of a future redeemed world under God's righteous rule. - **The Servant of the Lord:** Isaiah introduces the figure of God's Servant, whose mission is central to God's plan of salvation. This figure has been interpreted in various ways, including as a collective representation of Israel and as a messianic figure fulfilled in Jesus Christ. - **Universal Salvation:** Isaiah envisions a future where not only Israel but all nations will come to recognize the sovereignty of the Lord and participate in His worship. The Book of Isaiah has had a profound influence on Jewish and Christian thought, providing a theological foundation for concepts of messianic hope, the nature of divine judgment and redemption, and the universal scope of God's salvation plan. Its rich imagery, poetic language, and complex interweaving of judgment and grace continue to inspire readers and shape religious imagination.

"One could not hope for a more insightful, comprehensive, and educationally instructive guide to the study of our religiously diverse societies. This indispensable book is appropriate not only for the novice in the study of religion, but also for the established scholar. A landmark achievement!"--Julius Lipner, Professor Emeritus, University of Cambridge and Fellow of the British Academy "Paul Hedges presents to us a very serious contribution to the study of religion, both substantially and theoretically. Notably, it covers an impressive range of empirical material. More important than that, however, is that the work tells us how we may approach the study of religion from a more universal and, therefore, non-Eurocentric, non-androcentric, and non-classist perspective."--Syed Farid Alatas, author of Applying Ibn Khaldūn: The Recovery of a Lost Tradition in Sociology "A much-needed contribution to the study and practice of religious and interreligious studies. Each chapter provides students with a host of insightful and thought-provoking observations that open the floor to engaging discussions inside class and out. The book's historic observations provide new pathways for future corrections, for example, showing how to challenge the field's exclusion of non-Christian and non-Western traditions."--Nelly van Doorn-Harder, author of Women Shaping Islam "Paul Hedges offers a cutting-edge survey of every major method of studying religions. If you want a comprehensive overview of theoretical questions in religious studies that also includes political, postcolonial, global, and interreligious perspectives, it is hard to imagine a stronger book."--Kevin Schilbrack, author of Philosophy and the Study of Religions "Wide-ranging in ambition and scope, this superb textbook explores a range of critical perspectives on religion and serves as an indispensable guide to contemporary theoretical debates. The inclusion of a variety of voices beyond the white, western male as well as short text boxes explaining key terms and examples makes this book both cutting-edge and student-friendly. Highly recommended for students and instructors alike."--Richard King, author of Orientalism and Religion and coauthor of Selling Spirituality "Combining cutting-edge perspectives on critical religion with decolonial and intersectional perspectives, Hedges's book is a masterly pedagogical tool. His scope is global with meticulous attention to the local, both in addressing theory and in the case studies. This learner-friendly resource is accessible, challenging, and formative. A refreshing departure in the field of studying religion, this book is almost insanely good, a must-read for students and scholars."--Anderson Jeremiah, author of Community and Worldview among Paraiyars of South India: 'Lived' Religion "To appreciate the place of religion in our increasingly diverse world, one needs to be open-minded, critical, and well informed: that is the invitation of Understanding Religion. From its interdisciplinary approach to its thought-provoking case studies, this book will engage readers to challenge their own biases about religion. The material is comprehensive, accessible, and global, recognizing especially the emerging scholarship around the world, which makes the book indispensable for anyone who wishes to understand the dynamic facets of contemporary religious and nonreligious life."--Jayeel Cornelio, author of Being Catholic in the Contemporary Philippines: Young People Reinterpreting Religion "An accessible and engaging student-centered overview of theories and methods applied in the global and multidisciplinary study of religiously diverse societies. Paul Hedges's comprehensive and timely volume employs a critical approach, with particular emphases on justice, decolonisation, materiality, and intertextuality. Thought-provoking case studies, which are helpful and appealing to student and educator co-learners, are included in all chapters to illuminate the bo
