Since the 1950s, village studies have been the cornerstone of Indian social sciences in general and anthropology in particular. The emphasis of these disciplines has been on understanding the village not as an isolated case, but as an entry point to illuminate various theoretical and conceptual issues. India still lives in villages; therefore, it is important to understand the dynamics of rural village. This book presents a proper understanding of the socio-economic conditions of the villages of Himachal Pradesh. Devikothi was the first village surveyed by the Census of India in 1961. Therefore, in the present book author has made an attempt to study the changes that has taken place in the last 40 years in the studied village. Poor students (pauperes) had been frequenting the universities during the Middle Ages and the Early Modern Times (at times in significant numbers). University documents mention them as profiteers of reduction or remission of fees which students had to pay for matriculation, lectures, examinations and degrees. There is less information about their living conditions at the university. The University of Vienna always had a high number of paupers. Therefore the so-called “Kodreien” (codriae), i.e. dwellings established for poor students were typical institutions in Vienna. Taking the example of the biggest of these houses, the “Kodrei Goldberg” or codria Aurei montis, the book throws light how Viennese pauperes from c. 1470 to 1622 managed their lives between learning and begging. Finally the author takes a political point of view: were these codriae meant to support or control the poor students, which problems results from their begging activities in town, and how dealed the authorities (the university, the town and the sovereign) with these problems?

Since early 2003, the people of Darfur witnessed vicious rounds of campaigns and counter campaigns that claimed and continue to claim the lives of hundreds of civilians and forced about two million people to leave their homes in search of security. Accordingly, the government of Sudan in its policies and actions has fueled the humanitarian catastrophe in Darfur and successfully undermined the endeavor to mitigate and resolve the crisis. Apparently, Khartoum which is entrusted with the responsibility to protect its citizens behaved other wise and become security threat to the people of Darfur. Here, the crisis in Darfur might provide a sufficient opportunity for a more serious and pragmatic assessment of the practicality of state-centered approach to security. The prevalence and characterization of pathogenic bacteria from fish cultured in ponds fertilized with organic manures was studied. Almost the same type of bacterial species were isolated from organic manures, ponds water and organs of fish. Chicken manure supported more bacterial species as proved by its high total aerobic bacterial count than cow manure. Total aerobic bacterial count differed significantly in different organs of fish in three ponds except in case of liver. High prevalence of Aeromonas sp. was found in all systems except in chicken manure treated pond, where Pseudomonas sp. was higher in percentage. Water and organic manures were the main source of Aeromonas sp, Bacillus sp. and Pseudomonas sp. Chicken manure was source of Proteus sp. and Serratia sp. while Serratia sp. was also isolated from cow manures. Zoonotic pathogens isolated from fish are important from veterinary public health point of view and a broad spectrum research is highly called for. These bacteria cause diseases including haemorrhage, fin rot, skin necrosis, chronic lesions on caudal fin, epizootic ulcerative syndrome and septicaemia in fish.
