Random House USA There Are Rivers in the Sky A1071225887
Random House USA There Are Rivers in the Sky A1071225887
Sweeping across centuries, and stretching from Mesopotamia to London, this enchanting new novel by a Booker Prize finalist conjures a trio of characters living in the shadow of one of the greatest epic poems of all time. In the ancient city of Nineveh, on the bank of the River Tigris, King Ashurbanipal of Mesopotamia, erudite but ruthless, built a great library that would crumble with the end of his reign. From its ruins, however, emerged a poem, the Epic of Gilgamesh, that would infuse the existence of two rivers and bind together three lives. In 1840 London, Arthur is born beside the stinking, sewage-filled River Thames. With an abusive, alcoholic father and a mentally ill mother, Arthur's only chance of escaping destitution is his brilliant memory. When his gift earns him a spot as an apprentice at a leading publisher, Arthur's world opens up far beyond the slums, and one book in particular catches his interest: Ninveveh and Its Remains. In 2014 Turkey, Narin, a ten-year-old Yazhidi girl, is diagnosed with a rare disorder that will soon cause her to go deaf. Before that happens, her grandmother is determined to baptize her in a sacred Iraqi temple. But with the rising presence of ISIS and the destruction of the family's ancestral lands along the Tigris, Narin is running out of time. In 2018 London, the newly divorced Zaleekah, a hydrologist, moves into a houseboat on the Thames to escape her husband. Orphaned and raised by her wealthy uncle, Zaleekah had made the decision to take her own life in one month, until a curious book about her homeland changes everything. A dazzling feat of storytelling, There Are Rivers in the Sky entwines these outsiders with a single drop of water, a drop which remanifests across the centuries. Both a source of life and harbinger of death, rivers--the Tigris and the Thames--transcend history, transcend fate: "Water remembers. It is humans who forget."

The breathtaking new novel from the Booker-shortlisted, bestselling author of The Island of Missing Trees and 10 Minutes 38 Seconds in This Strange World - available for pre-order now ***** This is the story of one lost poem, two great rivers, and three remarkable lives – all connected by a single drop of water. In the ruins of Nineveh, that ancient city of Mesopotamia, there lies hidden in the sand fragments of a long-forgotten poem, the Epic of Gilgamesh. In Victorian London, an extraordinary child is born at the edge of the dirt-black Thames. Arthur’s only chance of escaping poverty is his brilliant memory. When his gift earns him a spot as an apprentice at a printing press, Arthur’s world opens up far beyond the slums, with one book soon sending him across the seas: Nineveh and Its Remains. In 2014 Turkey, Narin, a Yazidi girl living by the River Tigris, waits to be baptised with water brought from the holy sit of Lalish in Iraq. The ceremony is cruelly interrupted, and soon Narin and her grandmother must journey across war-torn lands in the hope of reaching the sacred valley of their people. In 2018 London, broken-hearted Zaleekhah, a hydrologist, moves to a houseboat on the Thames to escape the wreckage of her marriage. Zaleekhah foresees a life drained of all love and meaning – until an unexpected connection to her homeland changes everything. A dazzling feat of storytelling from one of the greatest writers of our time, Elif Shafak’s There are Rivers in the Sky is a rich, sweeping novel that spans centuries, continents and cultures, entwined by rivers, rains, and waterdrops: ‘Water remembers. It is humans who forget.’ ***** ‘ Elif Shafak is a unique and powerful voice in world literature’ Ian McEwan 'An extraordinary novel, fresh and cleansing, like the rain bouncing off the metal roof of our lives.' Colum McCann 'Make place for Elif Shafak on your bookshelf. Make place for her in your heart too. Four teenagers grow inseparable in the last days of the Soviet Union-but not all of them will live to see the new world arrive in this powerful debut novel, loosely based on Anton Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard. "Spectacular . . . intensely evocative and gorgeously written . . . will fill readers' eyes with tears and wonder."-Minneapolis Star Tribune ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: New York Post Coming of age in the USSR in the 1980s, best friends Anya and Milka try to envision a free and joyful future for themselves. They spend their summers at Anya's dacha just outside of Moscow, lazing in the apple orchard, listening to Queen songs, and fantasizing about trips abroad and the lives of American teenagers. Meanwhile, Anya's parents talk about World War II, the Blockade, and the hardships they have endured. By the time Anya and Milka are fifteen, the Soviet Empire is on the verge of collapse. They pair up with classmates Trifonov and Lopatin, and the four friends share secrets and desires, argue about history and politics, and discuss forbidden books. But the world is changing, and the fleeting time they have together is cut short by a sudden tragedy. Years later, Anya returns to Russia from America, where she has chosen a different kind of life, far from her family and childhood friends. When she meets Lopatin again, he is a smug businessman who wants to buy her parents' dacha and cut down the apple orchard. Haunted by the ghosts of her youth, Anya comes to the stark realization that memory does not fade or disappear; rather, it moves us across time, connecting our past to our future, joys to sorrows. Inspired by Anton Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard, Kristina Gorcheva-Newberry's The Orchard powerfully captures the lives of four Soviet teenagers who are about to lose their country and one another, and who struggle to survive, to save their friendship, to recover all that has been lost.

Manning Publications AI Agents and Applications A1077070899
Get a free eBook (PDF or ePub) from Manning as well as access to the online liveBook format (and its AI assistant that will answer your questions in any language) when you purchase the print book. AI-powered applications are rapidly becoming the new normal. Personal productivity assistants, coding agents, smarter search, and automated reporting tools are popping up everywhere. The LangChain ecosystem, and standards like MCP are driving this new gold rush. This book helps you claim your spot. This is your hands-on guide to creating real, production-ready language model solutions. With LangChain and LangGraph, you’ll orchestrate powerful agentic workflows and build dynamic tool-based agents that can search, summarize, reason, and act. You’ll move from essential prompt engineering to advanced Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG), and finally to deploying multi-agent systems using modern integration standards like the Model Context Protocol (MCP). In AI Agents and Applications: With LangChain, LangGraph and MCP, you’ll discover: • Prompt and context engineering for accurate, hallucination-resistant systems • Advanced RAG for summarization, semantic search, and reliable Q&A • Structured, multi-step agentic workflows with LangGraph • Tool-based agents that adapt in real time • Multi-agent systems for complex, real-world tasks • MCP integration to expose, compose, and consume plug-and-play tools About the technology This book teaches you to design reliable LLM-powered systems by focusing on the concepts, architectures, and design patterns that will stay stable even as models and APIs change. You’ll learn to structure prompts, compose modular chains, and build RAG pipelines that ingest documents, split them into chunks, embed them, retrieve the right context, and ground answers to elliminate (or vastly reduce) hallucinations. About the book Along the way you’ll build concrete applications—summarization and Q&A engines, context-aware chatbots with memory, and tool-using AI agents that orchestrate multi-step workflows with branching logic. If you want to learn to read in Japanese, it's best to make an effort early on to become at least somewhat familiar with all of the kanji that are most frequently used by Japanese people, which we call the "core kanji." Once you have developed a basic acquaintance with those characters, you can turn your attention to reading practice, which will naturally strengthen your knowledge of the kanji. Our goal is to help students to achieve basic Japanese reading fluency as efficiently as possible, and to that end we have produced four other volumes titled Learn to Read in Japanese, A Japanese Reader, in which we attempt to demystify and systematize the kanji-learning process and where we provide a large number of memory aids, as described below. This book is a companion to those four Japanese Readers, and it functions as an efficient tool for the memorization and retrieval of 2,088 core kanji. It lists the characters that we believe you need to know, together with the basic information required to get started reading. For each kanji, this information consists of: 1) The pronunciations that you are likely to encounter for each character. 2) The meanings of the character. 3) One or more sample Japanese words for each of the character's possible pronunciations. 4) A memorable description of the character, to help you to recognize it more easily in the future. Such descriptions often focus on differences between the current kanji and other similar ones. 5) A brief sentence that contains retrieval cues (or mnemonics) for each of the character's possible pronunciations. 6) Comparisons between the character and other similar kanji. Of course, long before you have become acquainted with all of the core kanji, you should begin to read Japanese text that is keyed to your level of knowledge. In other words, you should practice reading Japanese sentences that are accompanied by readily accessible romaji (or alternatively, hiragana/katakana) equivalents plus English translations and which include only kanji that you have already learned or are learning. In our four Readers, we provide a large number of such sentences at every point in the curriculum: 4,200 sentences in Volume 1, 1,660 in Volume 2, 912 in Volume 3 and 1,620 in Volume 4. In addition, the four books contain 6,500 vocabulary terms that are formatted for reading practice, together with mnemonics to aid in their memorization. In Volumes 2 and 3 of our series, we also refer students to two online reading practice resources, where they can find more than 3,000 additional practice sentences that are appropriate to their skill levels. After they have read all of this content a few times, they will be ready to move beyond such level-specific text and start reading unselected Japanese material, including newspaper articles. We wish you great success in your kanji study.

Bloomsbury Archer Dead but dreaming of Electric Sheep A1079130188
Bloomsbury presents Dead But Dreaming of Electric Sheep by Paul Tremblay, read by Sophie Amoss, Graham Halstead, John Pirhalla, and Dan Bittner A genre-bending near-future tech nightmare that is as bitingly funny as it is horrifically believable, from the New York Times bestselling author of The Cabin at the End of the World. Meet Julia Flang, a twenty-something former professional gamer, living with her retired uncle, and working two jobs she doesn't like. Out of the blue, her estranged mother, a CFO for one of the world's largest tech companies, offers her a temp job with a payday Julia can't refuse. One sham interview later, she's offered the job: to chaperone a man in a vegetative state from California to the East Coast. But he's not dead dead: he has an AI mind implanted in his head… Meet a middle-aged man who wakes within a disorienting hellscape filled with monstrous grotesqueries. Worse than the fluid, morphing reality in which he's trapped, he has no memory of who he is. He certainly doesn't remember getting the rabbit tattoo on his arm. He only knows that he must find a certain person. Who? He can't remember. Dead but Dreaming of Electric Sheep is a heady, terrifying genre-bender from one of the most groundbreaking voices in fiction today, exploring the 'I' in AI. Praise for Dead but Dreaming of Electric Sheep 'Philip K. Dick would be honored to read Tremblay's novel, which, with its hypnotic prose, compels us to confront our existential horror even as it makes us laugh, excites us, moves us, and yes, makes us shudder a lot' - Agustina Bazterrica, the international best-selling author of Tender Is the Flesh 'A master of his craft, Tremblay creates a new genre with every book he writes. This ingenious novel is refreshing, hilarious, teeming with warnings of real horrors to come, and ultimately entirely human. It will be the most stressfully entertaining journey of your year' - Virginia Feito, author of Victorian Psycho 'Innovative, terrifying, and deeply human. An electric and wild skewering of Silicon Valley's takeover of the human mind and body that could only be written by Paul Tremblay. Dead But Dreaming of Electric Sheep will keep you up at night' - Sarah Rose Etter, author of Ripe

Shortlisted for the Waterstones Debut Fiction Prize "Confessions is a remarkable debut. A complex and compulsive read that unravels the intricate twists and revelations among three generations of women with elegance and urgency." —Miranda Cowley Heller, author of The Paper Palace A “dazzling puzzle box of a novel” (Oprah Daily) following three generations of women as decades of secrets spill out of the attic of one family’s mysterious old home in rural Ireland—a propulsive, page-turning story about the power of choice. New York City, late September 2001. The walls of the city are papered over with photos of the missing. Cora Brady’s father is there, the poster she made taped to columns and bridges. When a letter arrives from an aunt she didn’t know existed in Ireland with the offer of a new life, the name jogs a memory: an old videocassette game Cora used to play as a child where two sisters must save the students of a mysterious boarding school. County Donegal, 1974. An eclectic group of artists known as the Screamers arrives in Burtonport and moves into the old schoolhouse down the road from where Róisín lives with her older sister Máire. Alternately kind and cruel, brilliant artist Máire is a mystery to Róisín, as is Máire’s relationship with the boy next door, Michael. When the Screamers look to hire an artist in residence, Róisín enlists Michael’s help to get Máire the job, setting in motion a chain of events that will put an ocean between the sisters and threaten to tear them apart forever. Burtonport, 2018. Lyca Brady lives in a sprawling old house with her mother, Cora, and great aunt, Ro. Abortion has just been legalized in Ireland, and Lyca is struggling to find herself outside her mother’s activism. An unexpected message from a childhood friend sends Lyca searching her house’s mysterious attic, with its strange collection of old medical equipment, piles of paperwork, and dusty boxes of ancient video games. There, she unearths secrets hidden for decades—secrets perhaps better left unknown. Catherine Airey’s haunting debut spins a mesmerizing story of family and fate, survival and revelation, examining the irresistible gravity of the past—how it endures through generations, pervasively present even when buried or forgotten.
