Vermilion Atlas of the Heart A1061820362
THE SUNDAY TIMES AND NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER From the bestselling author of The Gifts of Imperfection and Braving the Wilderness, an inspiring book examining the emotions and experiences that define us, helping us to become more emotionally fluent and connected. 'Thanks to Brené Brown I learned how to be vulnerable ... a life changer ' Miranda Hart, actor, comedian, and bestselling author of I Haven't Been Entirely Honest With You 'If we want to find the way back to ourselves and each other, we need language and the grounded confidence to both tell our stories, and to be stewards of the stories that we hear. This is the framework for meaningful connection.' Over the past two decades, Brown's extensive research into the experiences that make us who we are has shaped the cultural conversation and helped define what it means to be courageous with our lives. Atlas of the Heart draws on this research, as well as Brown's singular skills as a researcher/storyteller, to lay out an invaluable, research-based framework that shows us that naming an experience doesn't give the experience more power, it gives us the power of understanding, meaning and choice. Brown takes us on a journey through 87 of the emotions and experiences that define what it means to be human. As she maps the necessary skills and lays out an actionable framework for meaningful connection, she gives us the language and tools to access a universe of new choices and second chances - a universe where we can share and steward the stories of our bravest and most heart-breaking moments with one another in a way that builds connection. Written with Brown's trademark mix of research, storytelling and honesty, Atlas of the Heart is the revolutionary and inspiring guide that offers to help us all become more emotionally fluent and connected. Praise for Brené Brown 'Brené empowers us each to be a little more courageous' The Huffington Post ' Practical and insightful' Sheryl Sandberg, former Facebook COO and bestselling author of Lean In 'Brené cuts through the noise and speaks to what makes us human' Brigadier General Brook J. Leonard, United States Air Force 'Brené has profoundly inspired our product leaders to design in and embrace vulnerability, rather than engineer it out' Danielle Krettek, founder, Google Empathy Lab 'The master of hope' Metro
Random House Publishing Group The Beekeeper of Aleppo A1055524596
This unforgettable novel puts human faces on the Syrian war with the immigrant story of a beekeeper, his wife, and the triumph of spirit when the world becomes unrecognizable. "A beautifully crafted novel of international significance that has the capacity to have us open our eyes and see."-Heather Morris, author of The Tattooist of Auschwitz WINNER OF THE ASPEN WORDS LITERARY PRIZE FINALIST FOR THE DAYTON LITERARY PEACE PRIZE NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY REAL SIMPLE Nuri is a beekeeper and Afra, his wife, is an artist. Mornings, Nuri rises early to hear the call to prayer before driving to his hives in the countryside. On weekends, Afra sells her colorful landscape paintings at the open-air market. They live a simple life, rich in family and friends, in the hills of the beautiful Syrian city of Aleppo-until the unthinkable happens. When all they love is destroyed by war, Nuri knows they have no choice except to leave their home. But escaping Syria will be no easy task: Afra has lost her sight, leaving Nuri to navigate her grief as well as a perilous journey through Turkey and Greece toward an uncertain future in Britain. Nuri is sustained only by the knowledge that waiting for them is his cousin Mustafa, who has started an apiary in Yorkshire and is teaching fellow refugees beekeeping. As Nuri and Afra travel through a broken world, they must confront not only the pain of their own unspeakable loss but dangers that would overwhelm even the bravest souls. Above all, they must make the difficult journey back to each other, a path once so familiar yet rendered foreign by the heartache of displacement. Moving, intimate, and beautifully written, The Beekeeper of Aleppo is a book for our times: a novel that at once reminds us that the most peaceful and ordinary lives can be utterly upended in unimaginable ways and brings a journey in faraway lands close to home, never to be forgotten. Praise for The Beekeeper of Aleppo "This book dips below the deafening headlines, and tells a true story with subtlety and power."-Esther Freud, author of Mr. Mac and Me "This compelling tale had me gripped with its compassion, its sensual style, and its onward and lively urge for resolution."-Daljit Nagra, author of British Museum "This novel speaks to so much that is happening in the world today. It's intelligent, thoughtful, and relevant, but very importantly it is accessible. I'm recommending this book to everyone I care about."-Benjamin Zephaniah, author of Refugee Boy

GRIN William Shakespeare: an analysis of Macbeth's character A1008543238
Seminar paper from the year 2002 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2.0, University of Education Ludwigsburg, language: English, abstract: I would like to base my essay on the protagonist Macbeth. Probably composed in late 1606 or early 1607, Macbeth is the last of Shakespeare¿s tragedies, the others being Hamlet, King Lear and Othello. If Hamlet is the grandest of Shakespeare¿s plays, Macbeth is from a tragic standpoint the most sublime and the most impressive as an active play. If we just consider the plot, Macbeth is a relatively simple play. In fact like Richard III and numerous pre-Shakespearean plays, it deals with a traditional form: the rise and fall of a great man. In the first part of the play we read about Macbeth¿s rise to power; then he manages to become king of Scotland. From this moment on he begins with a period of tyranny that will end with Macbeth¿s death and the accession to the throne of the legitimate king. For this reason he can be considered as the epitome of a tragic hero. In the course of the play we notice a great development of Macbeth¿s character. At the beginning he is a man much honoured by his countrymen for his leading and courageous part in defence of his good king and native land. During many conflicts he showed his great courage and he continues showing this personal quality also when he becomes king and he has to take a lot of difficult decisions. But this first description about Macbeth¿s character is not the definitive one: in fact as soon as we meet him, we find out also his negative qualities, for example that he is both ambitious and murderous. It happens when the two Scottish generals, Macbeth and his friend Banquo, returning victorious from the great battle against a rebel army assisted by the troops of Norway, meet three witches in the middle of the road. They begin to speak to Macbeth: the first of them greets him with the title of Thane of Glaning (so it is in the reality); the second follows by giving him the title of Thane of Cawdor, to which honour he has no pretensions; the third predicts that Macbeth will be king of Scotland. Then turning to Banquo, they prophesy that his son will be king of Scotland. So they turn into the air and vanish. After a while Macbeth and his friend are stopped by some messengers of the king, who are empowered by him to confer upon Macbeth the dignity of Thane of Cawdor: an event so miraculously corresponding with the predictions of the witches astonishes Macbeth, who begins to think about the other and more important prophecy...

An excellent introduction to the power of public dissent." -- Kirkus "If supporting grassroots activists taught us anything, it is that when enough individuals come together, it is possible to take on a system." -- Yvon Chouinard What would the world look like if we couldn’t express outrage against the systems we disagree with or support the changes we seek? Our right to peaceful protest is under attack, and we must act now! Protest: Respect It Defend It Use It offers a powerful look at the role peaceful activism has played in advancing the public good—and shines a light on the urgent need to protect this democratic right. This is not a how-to guide. Rather, it is a celebration of what collective action can achieve, an invitation to be inspired, and a reminder that each of us has the capacity to make a difference. Featuring more than 40 iconic campaigns from around the world, the book combines photos, artifacts, and memorable quotes to create a vivid testament to the power of public dissent. Guest essays from Jane Fonda, Tennessee Representative Justin Pearson, Dolores Huerta, Nemonte Nenquimo, and others reveal how protest shaped their own commitment to driving change. Through storytelling and first-hand reflection, readers are invited to witness, reflect, and engage in peaceful activism—right here, right now. Rivers that don’t catch fire. The freedom to marry whom we love. Clean air and water. Even weekends off. Peaceful protest—protected in the U.S., as in many countries, as a cornerstone of participatory democracy— helped bring about each of these victories. Free speech, dissent, and public mobilization are essential tools for advancing so many causes, including environmental protection, workers’ rights, human rights, self-determination, and climate, social, and racial justice. Yet even as protest has delivered lasting progress—and perhaps because of it—the right to speak freely and organize is increasingly under threat. Crackdowns are no longer confined to authoritarian regimes; anti-protest sentiment is spreading across established democracies. Activists are being vilified, targeted, and even criminalized. In the U.S., anti-protest laws have been enacted in 49 states. SLAPP suits—meritless legal actions used to silence dissent—are on the rise. New legal concepts like “negligent protest” are being used to hold organizers liable for damages, while violent actions by anti-democratic forces are reframed or excused. Published to coincide with the 250th anniversary of one of history’s most consequential acts of protest—the signing of the Declaration of Independence—this book is an invitation. It invites readers to learn about the creativity, courage, and impact of peaceful protest, to be inspired by those who came before, and to recognize that this essential democratic right belongs to everyone—now more than ever.
Italy, 1945. 'Where am I?' The young man wakes, bewildered. He sees olive trees against a bright blue sky. A soft voice soothes him. 'We saw you fall from your plane. The parachute saved you.' He remembers nothing of his life, or the war that has torn the world apart... but where does he belong? England, present day. Antiques-shop owner Susannah feels adrift. Her beloved father has died, and her grandmother Elsie's memories are disappearing. But everything changes when she stumbles across a yellowed postcard bearing a picture of a beautiful Italian stone farmhouse, tucked away in Elsie's dressing table. A message dated from the Second World War speaks of a secret love. Could her grandmother, who never talked about the past, have fallen for someone in Italy all those years ago? With Elsie confused and distressed by her questions, heartbroken Susannah tracks down the house on the postcard. Arriving at what is now a crumbling hotel by the sparkling Italian sea, she feels strangely at home. And after an unexpected encounter with handsome wine waiter Giacomo, she can't tell if it's his dark eyes or his offer to help solve her mystery that makes her heart race. Together they find a dusty chest tucked in a forgotten corner of the building. The white silk of a World War II parachute spills out. And the Royal Air Force identity tag nestled in the folds bears a familiar name... As a story of lost memories, terrible betrayal and impossible choices unfolds, Susannah comes closer to a devastating wartime secret at the heart of her own family. Did she ever really know her grandmother? And when she finally learns the truth, will it help heal her pain - or tear her apart for good? An absolutely stunning page-turner that will sweep you away to the olive groves and majestic views of the Italian coast. Perfect for fans of Kathryn Hughes, Fiona Valpy and Victoria Hislop. White Nights is a tender and hauntingly beautiful novella by Fyodor Dostoevsky that captures the fragile boundary between dreams and reality, love and loneliness, hope and heartbreak. Set against the luminous backdrop of St. Petersburg during its ethereal summer nights-when darkness never fully descends-this deeply emotional story explores the inner world of a solitary dreamer whose quiet existence is transformed by a fleeting encounter. The narrator, a shy and introspective young man, lives a life largely confined to imagination. Isolated from society and more comfortable in fantasy than in reality, he wanders the city streets in quiet contemplation, finding companionship in the buildings, canals, and twilight skies. Though he longs for connection, he remains detached from the world around him-until one fateful night when he meets Nastenka, a young woman standing alone by the river. Over the course of four luminous nights, the two strangers form a delicate bond, sharing their stories, fears, and aspirations. The dreamer reveals his lifelong solitude and romantic idealism, while Nastenka confides in him about her own love and longing. What unfolds is a bittersweet tale of emotional intimacy born in a brief moment of chance-a connection that feels infinite yet is bound by time and circumstance. Dostoevsky masterfully delves into the psychology of loneliness and yearning. Through the dreamer's sensitive and passionate voice, readers experience the intensity of unfulfilled desire and the intoxicating hope that even the smallest spark of affection can ignite. The story reflects on the human tendency to build castles in the air-on how imagination can both sustain and deceive us. In just a few days, the narrator lives through a lifetime of emotion, discovering both the ecstasy of connection and the quiet ache of disappointment. Set within the romantic glow of St. Petersburg's "white nights," the novella's atmosphere mirrors the characters' emotional state-soft, fleeting, and suspended between light and shadow. Dostoevsky's prose is intimate and lyrical, yet piercingly honest, capturing the vulnerability of the human heart with remarkable precision. At its core, White Nights is a meditation on love in its purest and most fragile form. It speaks to anyone who has ever fallen deeply and quickly, who has cherished a brief encounter as though it were destiny, or who has felt both grateful and broken by a moment that could not last. It is a story about dreamers-about those who live intensely within their hearts, even when the world offers them little in return. Poignant, reflective, and profoundly human, White Nights remains one of Dostoevsky's most accessible and emotionally resonant works. In its pages, readers will find a timeless exploration of solitude, longing, and the delicate beauty of a love that glows-if only for a night.

A stunning New York Times bestseller with a powerful and unforgettable YA voice. Perfect for fans of Tomi Adeyemi's The Children of Blood and Bone, Angie Thomas's The Hate U Give and Sarah Crossan's One. Xiomara has always kept her words to herself. When it comes to standing her ground in her Harlem neighbourhood, she lets her fists and her fierceness do the talking. But X has secrets – her feelings for a boy in her bio class, and the notebook full of poems that she keeps under her bed. And a slam poetry club that will pull those secrets into the spotlight. Because in spite of a world that might not want to hear her, Xiomara refuses to stay silent. A novel about finding your voice and standing up for what you believe in, no matter how hard it is to say. Brave, bold and beautifully written - dealing with issues of race, feminism and faith. “Crackles with energy and snaps with authenticity and voice.” —Justina Ireland, author of Dread Nation “An incredibly potent debut.” —Jason Reynolds, author of the National Book Award Finalist Ghost “Acevedo has amplified the voices of girls en el barrio who are equal parts goddess, saint, warrior, and hero.” —Ibi Zoboi, author of American Street 'A story that will slam the power of poetry and love back into your heart.' - Laurie Halse Anderson, author of Speak and Chains 'Acevedo breathes words instead of air' - Lisa Heathfield, author of award-winning Paper Butterflies ‘Powerful; finely crafted verse . . .
