Tabelle 04.02 in BATSH 12) werden 363 in vier Bänden (BATSH 4, BATSH 9, BATSH 10 i.V., BATSH 18) ediert. Out of the 677 written artifacts in Middle Assyrian language and script excavated and registered in the section “Gebäude P” of the excavation unit „Tell / Citadel” (Table 04.02 in BATSH 12) 363 will be edited in four volumes: BATSH 4, BATSH 9, BATSH 10 i.p., BATSH 18. Developing a prospect on the formation of the city of Dūr-Katlimmu; its history, function and significance during the 13th c. BC and beyond the archaeological context is recorded and interpreted in BATSH 12, chaps. 02, 04,12, and 18. In this volume twenty-nine letters and fifteen envelopes are edited. Functioning as addressee and in one case as sender is a certain Aššur-iddin. This so far historically unknown man emerges as a collateral relative of the royal dynasty whose career is closely related to Dūr-Katlimmu. Holding office and living in Dūr-Katlimmu he is appointed grand vizier during the later regnal years of king Tukulti-Ninurta I. Extending to the border of the Hittite empire his area of authority turns out to be the newly conquered land of Hanigalbat. His assignment was to control, protect, and administrate this western part of the Middle Assyrian state. Getting informed about numerous affairs we learn about his staff and ongoing affairs. One of them is related to the conflict with Kassite Babylonia whose king Kastiliaš IV had been defeated by Tukulti-Ninurta I in a preceding battle and appears here – together with his entourage – visiting the city of Dūr-Katlimmu as captive of the Assyrian king. Numerous toponyms shed light on the historical geography of the region and on the extension of the political governance in the western part of the empire.
GRIN Cruelty of the Human Species in T.H. White's "The Book of Merlyn" A1025359922
Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2011 im Fachbereich Anglistik - Literatur, Note: 2,7, Universität Duisburg-Essen (Geisteswissenschaften), Veranstaltung: Proseminar: "Man and Animal in Contemporary Fiction", Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: "Even the Greek definition anthropos, He Who Looks Up, is inaccurate. Man seldom looks above his own height [...]" (White 53). This acknowledgement by Merlyn gives a good impression of the whole tenor of the novel The Book of Merlyn. This work is part of the pentalogy The Once and Future King, which retells the Arthurian legend. In this book King Arthur, not a young boy anymore and facing a battle with his enemy Mordred, finds himself standing in front of a council consisting of various types of wise animals who deal with a difficult question: In what way does human kind distinguish itself from other species and how do they fit into the world? It is common knowledge that neither modesty nor peaceableness is one of human kind's speciality. No species eliminates land, other creatures and even members of their own race in such great extent like mankind did and is still doing. These and other issues are in the centre of attention in this novel. Furthermore the characters discuss a lot about political and social systems and in how far some of these are or are not just a characteristic of human societies. However, the reader of the pentalogy by T.H. White could wonder why these matters are so important for the Arthurian legend or the course of this version of the story in specific. Especially the fact that many subjects of discussion refer to many historical events and figures who existed in the modern age and some of them even at White's time is very confusing and does not fit into the pattern of the pentalogy. Nevertheless, there is no doubt that these issues have a special meaning within the whole work and support the plot in many ways. The modern aspects of this book turn the whole historical fantasy saga into a socio-political and philosophical reading. And this makes the story more multifaceted. So, beneath the fact that Arthur represents a thoroughly heroic figure, who stands in contrast to the evil ones and does heroic deeds, the reader is also confronted with a more complex picture of the human race and with the inconvenient truth about its apparent leading position in the world.

For thousands of years, the ancient Greek city-state of Sparta has been famed as the ultimate warrior society. The flowing crimson capes and bronze shields of Spartan warriors remain the enduring image of masculine bravery, austerity, and toughness; King Leonidas's 300 soldiers at Thermopylae the quintessential example of courageous self-sacrifice in battle. But who were the Spartans, really-and how did they rise from a humble village in the Peloponnese to become the dominant military power of ancient Greece? In this landmark new history, renowned Sparta expert Andrew Bayliss delivers a strikingly clarifying, relentlessly complex portrait of a culture and people long shrouded in myth. Sifting masterfully through historical records and modern archaeological evidence, Bayliss traces the shifting alliances and volatile conflicts Spartans faced during the city-state's evolution from a minor hamlet in the Peloponnese to the foremost power of ancient Greece. In vivid detail, Bayliss brings to life the excruciating training, rigid dietary habits, and extreme discipline that molded the warriors of history's most renowned military power. He also lays bare lesser-known aspects of Spartan society that complicate its egalitarian reputation, including complex gender dynamics, stark wealth inequality, and its brutal exploitation of slave labor. With incisive analysis, Bayliss illuminates how the Spartans' ruthless might, unparalleled military ambition, and singular exclusivity fueled their seemingly unstoppable rise-and how those same factors became their undoing. Enthralling and informative in equal measure, Sparta will stand for decades as the definitive history of one of antiquity's most legendary civilizations-from its meteoric rise to its surprising downfall.

Troy lies in smoking ruins as the victorious Greeks fill their ships with the spoils of battle. Alongside the treasures looted are the many Trojan women captured by the Greeks – among them the legendary prophetess Cassandra, and her watchful maid, Ritsa. Enslaved as concubine – war-wife – to King Agamemnon, Cassandra is plagued by visions of his death – and her own – while Ritsa is forced to bear witness to both Cassandra’s frenzies and the horrors to come. Meanwhile, awaiting the fleet’s return is Queen Clytemnestra, vengeful wife of Agamemnon. Heart-shattered by her husband’s choice to sacrifice their eldest daughter to the gods in exchange for a fair wind to Troy, she has spent this long decade plotting retribution, in a palace haunted by child-ghosts. As one wife journeys toward the other, united by the vision of Agamemnon’s death, one thing is certain: this long-awaited homecoming will change everyone’s fates forever. ‘The queen of literary historical fiction, Barker is an unflinching guide for a trip across ancient Greece’ National Geographic ‘In her thrilling retelling of the stories of Cassandra and Clytemnestra, Barker conjures up a world stained by the grief of mothers and daughters. Agamemnon’s palace is the stuff of nightmares, a world of suspicion and fear, plagued by the ghosts of innocents’ Paula Hawkins 'You go to her for plain truths, a driving storyline and a clear eye, steadily facing the history of our world' Guardian

I still give it to friends today' - Bill Gates 'One of the most powerful mindset books ever written' - Daniel Pink, bestselling author of Drive With unparalleled insights into the mental landscape of performance, The Inner Game of Tennis provides you with the definitive framework for long-term success. In his revolutionary approach, with applications well beyond tennis, Gallwey will teach you how to: Trust the intuitive wisdom of your body Quiet your mind of worry, fear and distraction Achieve a state of 'relaxed concentration', in which success comes naturally Described by Billie Jean King as her 'tennis bible', Timothy Gallwey's international bestseller has been essential reading for sports players of all abilities since it was first published in 1974. Built on a foundation of Zen thinking and humanistic psychology, Gallwey's method has had a far-reaching impact both on and off the tennis court. The instant #1 New York Times and #1 national indie bestseller! Perfect for fans of Madeline Miller and Alexandra Bracken, this richly imagined retelling of the Greek myth of Hekate, a goddess of the underworld, is a powerful novel-in-verse from world-renowned poet Nikita Gill. Hekate sings the story of its eponymous heroine. Born into a world on fire and at war, she and her mother are left behind by the menfolk of their Titan family as the battle against the new Gods—the Olympians—begins. Soon, Hekate and her mother are forced to flee their home as the Olympians overpower and enslave the Titans, including Hekate’s father, Perses, and gain dominion over the universe. In a bid to protect Hekate from the clutches of Zeus and Poseidon, her mother leaves her in the underworld with the goddess Styx and king of the underworld, Hades, where she must make a life for herself and discover her divine purpose. Here begins Nikita Gill’s beautiful and propulsive reimagining of Hekate’s myth which unfolds into a coming-of-age adventure story and quest in which our young protagonist—not yet a goddess—sets out to discover what has happened to her parents, heal from the trauma of her separation from them, make a new home for herself in the underworld, and, eventually, step into her true power as a woman and goddess, before it’s too late. Meet all the Goddesses of the Underworld: Hekate: The Witch Styx: The River Nyx: The Night (coming Fall 2027!)
