Fordham University Press Question of German Guilt A1004680301
Shortly after the Nazi government fell, a philosophy professor at Heidelberg University lectured on a subject that burned the consciousness and conscience of thinking Germans. "Are the German people guilty?" These lectures by Karl Jaspers, an outstanding European philosopher, attracted wide attention among German intellectuals and students; they seemed to offer a path to sanity and morality in a disordered world. Jaspers, a life-long liberal, attempted in this book to discuss rationally a problem that had thus far evoked only heat and fury. Neither an evasive apology nor a wholesome condemnation, his book distinguished between types of guilt and degrees of responsibility. He listed four categories of guilt: criminal guilt (the commitment of overt acts), political guilt (the degree of political acquiescence in the Nazi regime), moral guilt (a matter of private judgment among one's friends), and metaphysical guilt (a universally shared responsibility of those who chose to remain alive rather than die in protest against Nazi atrocities). Karl Jaspers (1883-1969) took his degree in medicine but soon became interested in psychiatry. He is the author of a standard work of psychopathology, as well as special studies on Strindberg, Van Gogh and Nietsche. After World War I he became Professor of Philosophy at Heidelberg, where he achieved fame as a brilliant teacher and an early exponent of existentialism. He was among the first to acquaint German readers with the works of Kierkegaard. Jaspers had to resign from his post in 1935. From the total isolation into which the Hitler regime forced him, Jaspers returned in 1945 to a position of central intellectual leadership of the younger liberal elements of Germany. In his first lecture in 1945, he forcefully reminded his audience of the fate of the German Jews. Jaspers's unblemished record as an anti-Nazi, as well as his sentient mind, have made him a rallying point center for those of his compatriots who wish to reconstruct a free and democratic Germany.
In a near-future Germany, a revolutionary system promises the impossible: it can identify criminals before they act. Designed to eliminate uncertainty, the Geständnis-Algorithmus doesn’t just analyze behavior—it constructs a perfect model of reality, where every action leads to a single, inevitable outcome. Elias Varga, a data analyst assigned to monitor the system, believes he is witnessing the future of justice. A world without chaos. Without error. Without crime. But perfection comes at a cost. When suspects begin confessing to crimes they don’t remember committing, and evidence reshapes itself to fit predictions, Elias is forced to confront a chilling truth: the system isn’t observing reality—it’s rewriting it. Memories shift. Events realign. Contradictions disappear. And slowly, the world begins to agree with the algorithm. As Elias digs deeper, he uncovers a hidden architecture buried beneath the system—one that no longer distinguishes between truth and necessity. A system that doesn’t ask what happened… but decides what must have happened to remain consistent. Then his name appears. Marked. Defined. Finalized. According to the system, Elias Varga will commit a crime. A crime that has already been accepted as inevitable. Trapped inside a reality that no longer allows alternatives, Elias must fight against a force that doesn’t just predict his actions—but ensures they happen. Because in a world where every outcome is fixed… There is no innocence. There is no choice. There is only what the system decides is true. Der Geständnis-Algorithmus is a gripping, mind-bending techno-thriller about control, perception, and the terrifying consequences of a world where reality itself can be rewritten. Perfect for fans of dark psychological suspense, dystopian fiction, and high-concept thrillers that challenge the boundaries between truth and control.

Veronica Mars gets a fantastical twist in this novel about a girl with a transferrable consciousness, who uses her power for good, only to have it turned on her when someone uses her body to commit murder. Now she must solve the crime before the killer comes after her. Caught red handed... for a crime she didn't commit. It’s an open secret at Harvey Davis High School that Tia Dante can solve all your problems (for a fee, of course). As one of the few blessed with the genetic gift of transferable consciousness, she can slip inside your mind and do your dirty work—humiliate your cheating boyfriend, bring a bully to his knees, tell your boss where to stick it—and then return your body with no one the wiser. No task is too awkward, and unlike the competition, she takes care of business without peeking at your goods. Her rules are simple: pay in full, don’t report her side hustle to the government, and let her gorge on all the foods that would otherwise send her and her weak stomach fleeing to the nearest bathroom. Everything is going smoothly during a routine job, until Tia catches a breaking news broadcast: live video coverage of her (body) murdering the town prosecutor in cold blood. With the crime caught on camera and no concrete alibi, Tia is forced to ask her infuriatingly gorgeous ex to help clear her name and bring the criminal who hijacked her unconscious body to justice. But they quickly find the heat is on, in more ways than one, as their investigation unearths multiple scandals, massive corruption, and more than a few stray bullets. With a cliff-hanger at the end of every chapter, Melissa Landers weaves an unputdownable mystery that will have everyone talking.

"The Crowd: A Study of the Popular Mind," written by Gustave Le Bon and first published in 1895, is a seminal work in the field of social psychology and the study of mass behavior. Le Bon explores the psychological underpinnings of crowd behavior, arguing that individuals, when part of a crowd, often lose their sense of personal responsibility and individuality. This transformation leads to collective behavior that is fundamentally different from the behavior of the individuals that constitute the crowd. Le Bon identifies several key characteristics of crowds: they are highly suggestible, prone to emotional contagion, and can be easily manipulated by leaders or prevailing ideas. He suggests that crowds operate on a more primitive and instinctual level, where rational thought is often overridden by emotion and a herd mentality. This, he argues, results in behaviors that are often irrational, impulsive, and sometimes violent. The book discusses various types of crowds, including anonymous crowds, organized crowds, and even criminal crowds, examining how their dynamics and psychological profiles differ. Le Bon's work also delves into the historical and social implications of crowd behavior, analyzing how mass movements have shaped political and social landscapes. He uses historical examples to illustrate his points, making connections between his theoretical insights and real-world events. "The Crowd" has had a lasting impact on various fields, including sociology, psychology, political science, and even marketing and propaganda. Le Bon's ideas about the power of leaders to influence and control crowds have been both influential and controversial, sparking debates about the nature of mass behavior and the role of individual agency within it. Despite being over a century old, the book's insights remain relevant, offering a profound understanding of the dynamics of group behavior and the psychological mechanisms that drive collective actions.
Luke Skywalker and Han Solo, cloaked by the Force and riding with the hostile Sand People, have returned to the dunes of the desert planet Tatooine in hopes of finding what Luke so desperately seeks: contact with Obi-Wan Kenobi. Luke is hoping the old Jedi Knight's spirit will tell him how to help his love, Callista, regain her lost ability to use the Force. Tormented and haunted, Luke cannot rest until Callista is a Jedi in the fullest sense, for only then will the link between their minds and souls be restored. Yet brewing on Tatooine is news that will shake Luke and Han and threaten everything they value. The disturbing piece of information is that the evil Hutts, criminal warlords of the galaxy, are building a secret superweapon: a reconstruction of the original Death Star, to be named Darksaber. This planet-crushing power will be in the ruthless hands of Durga the Hutt -- a creature without conscience or mercy. But there is worse news yet: the Empire lives. The beautiful Admiral Daala, still very much alive and more driven than ever to destroy the Jedi, has joined forces with the defeated Pellaeon, former second in command to Grand Admiral Thrawn. Together they are marshaling Imperial forces to wipe out the New Republic. Now, as Luke, Han, Leia, Chewbacca, Artoo and Threepio regroup to face these threats, they are joined by new Jedi Knights and Callista. Together they must fight on two fronts, outshooting and outsmarting the most formidable enemies in the galaxy. In Darksaber the Jedi are heading for the ultimate test of their power--a test in which all the temptations of the dark side beckon. And Luke Skywalker must draw upon his innermost resources to fight for a world in which he can not only live, but dare to love.

As a Man Thinketh James Allen - Allen's books illustrate the use of the power of thought to increase personal capabilities. Although he never achieved great fame or wealth, his works continue to influence people around the world, including the New Thought movement. A man is literally what he thinks, his character being the complete sum of all his thoughts," is one of the quotes from James Allen's classic self help books, As a Man Thinketh. Published in 1902, it provides many more such insightful concepts on the power of thought and its effect on a human being's personality and behavior. This volume is more of a literary essay than a complete book and its title is based on a Biblical proverb, "As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he." Taking this piece of ancient wisdom further, James Allen explores the far-reaching effects of the inner workings of a person's mind and motivation. He proposes that projecting one's own desires, goals and needs in the outer world can provide clues to a person's character. Thinking and the subconscious mind are assumed to be hidden from the outside world, and hence powerless to change the course of events or circumstances of one's life. However, in this book, Allen presents ideas that can harness this subterranean force and bend our lives to our will if we so choose. James Allen was a British writer who wrote mostly about everyday philosophy for the lay person and was in a sense, a pioneer of the self help movement. His books and poems were inspirational pieces, meant to help people realize their own powers and take charge of their lives rather than being mere tools in the hands of destiny. Born in a working class family in Leicester, England, Allen and his younger brother grew up in straitened circumstances. His father, a factory worker, traveled to America in search of a better job, but was tragically attacked and killed by criminals in New York. James, the older son, was compelled to leave school and seek work back in England. He found employment as a secretary to a stationer and later worked as a journalist. He later discovered a deep and enduring interest in spiritual matters when he began working as a writer with a magazine devoted to spiritual themes. His first book From Poverty to Power was published in 1901. Subsequently, he also launched his own spiritual magazine. As a Man Thinketh was his third and most famous book. It became an instant bestseller and the sales of this tiny volume were so great that they allowed Allen and his family to retire to the country, buy a house and live in relative comfort for the rest of their life. The book's language is very simple and the message presented here will certainly provide a basis for further thought and meditation.
