Random House N.Y. Annihilation: Star Wars Legends (the Old Republic) A1028924342
Based on the epic videogame from BioWare and LucasArts NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER The Sith Empire is in flux. The Emperor is missing, presumed dead, and an ambitious Sith lord's attempt to seize the throne has ended fatally. Still, Darth Karrid, commander of the fearsome Imperial battle cruiser Ascendant Spear, continues her relentless efforts to achieve total Sith domination of the galaxy. But Karrid's ruthless determination is more than matched in the steely resolve of Theron Shan, whose unfinished business with the Empire could change the course of the war for good. Though the son of a Jedi master, Theron does not wield the Force-but like his renowned mother, the spirit of rebellion is in his blood. As a top covert agent for the Republic, he struck a crucial blow against the Empire by exposing and destroying a Sith superweapon arsenal-which makes him the ideal operative for a daring and dangerous mission to end Ascendant Spear's reign of terror. Joined by hot-headed smuggler Teff'ith, with whom he has an inexplicable bond, and wise Jedi warrior Gnost-Dural, Darth Karrid's former master, Theron must match wits and weapons with a battle-tested crew of the most cold-blooded dark side disciples. But time is brutally short. And if they don't seize their one chance to succeed, they will surely have countless opportunities to die. Praise for Annihilation "An espionage story interwoven with personal conflicts . . . space battles, lightsaber fights, and gripping spy missions . . . Annihilation may be Karpyshyn's strongest novel yet."-Roqoo Depot "Pure Star Wars action-adventure entertainment as only Drew Karpyshyn can write it."-The Founding Fields

Bloomsbury Wildlife The Bumblebee Flies Anyway A1076389149
Bloomsbury Wildlife The Bumblebee Flies Anyway A1076389149
Bloomsbury presents The Bumblebee Flies Anyway, written and read by Kate Bradbury 'Wonderfully intense and honest - a poignant manual of how to grow hope against the odds.' Chris Packham Finding herself in a new home in Brighton, Kate Bradbury sets about transforming her decked, barren backyard into a beautiful wildlife garden. She documents the unbuttoning of the earth and the rebirth of the garden, the rewilding of a tiny urban space. On her own she unscrews, saws and hammers the decking away, she clears the builders' rubble and rubbish beneath it, and she digs and enriches the soil, gradually planting it up with plants she knows will attract wildlife. She erects bird boxes and bee hotels, hangs feeders and grows nectar- and pollen-rich plants, and slowly brings life back to the garden. But while she's doing this Kate's neighbours continue to pave and deck their gardens locking them away, the wildlife she tries to save is further threatened, and she feels she's fighting an uphill battle. Is there any point in gardening for wildlife when everyone else is drowning the land in poison and cement? Sadly, events take Kate away from her garden, and she finds herself back in Birmingham where she grew up, travelling the roads she used to race down on her bike in the 80s, thinking of the gardens and wildlife she loved, witnessing more land lost beneath paving stones. If the dead could return, what would they say about the land we have taken, the ancient routes we have carved up, the wildlife we have lost?

Reichert, L Hymnus und Verehrung im Wort. A1078043298
Reichert, L Hymnus und Verehrung im Wort. A1078043298
Hymnographers occupy a prominent position in Byzantine ecclesiastical art, one that has hitherto been examined only in a fragmentary manner. The present study is devoted to their visual representation and function between the twelfth and fifteenth centuries. At its core lies the question of why certain poets of liturgical chant – John of Damascus, Kosmas Melodos, Joseph the Hymnographer, Theodore the Studite, and Theophanes Graptos – are accorded a distinguished status within monumental pictorial programmes, at times comparable to that of the Evangelists. By combining art-historical analysis with questions drawn from liturgical history and theology, the study redefines the role of hymnography as a structuring and meaning-generating element within Byzantine image programmes. The first part examines the hymnographers with regard to their vitae, iconography, dress, and characteristic gestures. On this basis, the study identifies features by which they are recognisable as hymnographers, in particular specific gestures associated with singing and distinctive forms of headgear. The second part is devoted to the pictorial contexts in which hymnographers appear. A key finding is their close association with sepulchral spaces and foundations: in such settings, they frequently function as ‘guardians of the dead’; accompanying the deceased patron in perpetual worship and attesting to his orthodoxy. In other image types, hymnographers assume a mediating role within New Testament scenes, particularly in the iconography of the Koimesis. Acting from within the pictorial field, they articulate and interpret the depicted events, bringing liturgical experience, visual form, and theological reflection into close alignment. They thus function as bridging figures between earthly and eschatological realms, as well as between the beholder and the image itself. Particular attention is paid to the individually selected texts inscribed on their scrolls, which serve not merely as identifying attributes but intervene actively in the meaning of the image by interpreting, deepening, and commenting upon the scenes depicted. The hymnographers thus appear as visual embodiments of sung liturgical poetry and contribute significantly to the performative intensification of the church interior. In its conclusion, the study interprets the function of the hymnographers in terms of a Byzantine form of ‘performatism’: through text, gesture, and positioning, they generate pictorial spaces that draw the viewer actively into the liturgical event. The study thereby offers a new contribution to the interrelation of hymnography, liturgy, and visual art, demonstrating that the depiction of hymnographers constitutes a deliberate and theologically highly coded element of Byzantine monumental painting.

At first, with its bright and spacious interior, it seems the perfect first home. Ender's Shadow explores the stars in this all-new novel... At the end of Shadow of the Giant, Bean flees to the stars with three of his children--the three who share the engineered genes that gave him both hyper-intelligence and a short, cruel physical life. The time dilation granted by the speed of their travel gives Earth's scientists generations to seek a cure, to no avail. In time, they are forgotten--a fading ansible signal speaking of events lost to Earth's history. But the Delphikis are about to make a discovery that will let them save themselves, and perhaps all of humanity in days to come. For there in space before them lies a derelict Formic colony ship. Aboard it, they will find both death and wonders--the life support that is failing on their own ship, room to grow, and labs in which to explore their own genetic anomaly and the mysterious disease that killed the ship's colony. HarperCollins US The Motion of the Body Through Space A1056011430
In Lionel Shriver's entertaining send-up of today's cult of exercise?which not only encourages better health, but now like all religions also seems to promise meaning, social superiority, and eternal life?an aging husband's sudden obsession with extreme sport makes him unbearable. After an ignominious early retirement, Remington announces to his wife Serenata that he's decided to run a marathon. This from a sedentary man in his sixties who's never done a lick of exercise in his life. His wife can't help but observe that his ambition is ?hopelessly trite.? A loner, Serenata disdains mass group activities of any sort. Besides, his timing is cruel. Serenata has long been the couple's exercise freak, but by age sixty, her private fitness regimes have destroyed her knees, and she'll soon face debilitating surgery. Yes, becoming more active would be good for Remington's heart, but then why not just go for a walk? Without several thousand of your closest friends? As Remington joins the cult of fitness that increasingly consumes the Western world, her once-modest husband burgeons into an unbearable narcissist. Ignoring all his other obligations, he engages a saucy, sexy personal trainer named Bambi, who treats Serenata with contempt. When Remington sets his sights on the legendarily grueling triathlon, MettleMan, Serenata is sure he'll end up injured or dead. And even if he does survive, their marriage may not. The Motion of the Body Through Space is vintage Lionel Shriver written with psychological insight, a rich cast of characters, lots of verve and petulance, an astute reading of contemporary culture, and an emotionally resonant ending.

Abrams & Chronicle Video Game of the Year A1065203177
Abrams & Chronicle Video Game of the Year A1065203177
Breaking down the 40-year history of the world’s most popular art form, one video game at a time Pong. The Legend of Zelda. Final Fantasy VII. Rock Band. Fortnite. Animal Crossing: New Horizons. For each of the 40 years of video game history, there is a defining game, a game that captured the zeitgeist and left a legacy for all games that followed. Through a series of entertaining, informative, and opinionated critical essays, author and tech journalist Jordan Minor investigates, in chronological order, the innovative, genre-bending, and earth-shattering games from 1977 through 2022. Minor explores development stories, critical reception, and legacy, and also looks at how gaming intersects with and eventually influences society at large while reveling in how uniquely and delightfully bizarre even the most famous games tend to be. From portly plumbers to armor-clad space marines and the speedy rodents in between, Video Game of the Year paints individual portraits that, as a whole, give readers a stronger appreciation for the vibrant variety and long-lasting impact of this fresh, exciting, and massively popular art form. Illustrated throughout with retro-inspired imagery and featuring contributions from dozens of leading industry voices, including New York Times bestselling author Jason Schreier (Blood, Sweat, and Pixels; Kotaku), Max Scoville (IGN), Rebekah Valentine (IGN), Blessing Adeoye Jr. (Kinda Funny), and Devindra Hardawar (Engadget), this year-by-year anthology is a loving reflection on the world’s most popular art form. Vermilion Star Wars A1008121549
Vermilion Star Wars A1008121549
In the time immediately following the destruction of the Death Star and the years between the Battle of Yavin and the foundation of the Rebel Base on Hoth, the Empire's grip on the galaxy has become an unyielding fist of retribution. Pressed into action by Emperor Palpatine, Imperial forces have stepped up efforts to hunt down and imprison Rebel sympathizers, shipping them off to newly formed detainment moons via huge prison barges. By necessity these barges are floating chambers of degradation and vice, notoriously unreliable spacecraft staffed by Imperial corrections officers whose cruelty rivals that of the inmates. The Imperial Prison Barge Virtue is hauling its load of prisoners, criminals and murderers, human and non-human, across the galaxy, when it breaks down in deep space. Soon after, the ship's warden discovers a derelict Star Destroyer, seemingly abandoned, and sends a boarding party to scavenge parts to repair the Virtue. Half of them don't come back. The ones that do are infected with a virus so deadly that within hours, it has wiped out ninety-nine percent of the barge's population. But for the handful of survivors -- two brothers, the Virtue's female chief medical officer, and a sadistic captain of the guards, along with a certain rogue smuggler and his Wookiee sidekick - the true horror is just begun. Because those inmates and guards who died of the virus don't stay dead...and when they come back, they're extremely hungry. Against their better judgment, the survivors take refuge aboard the massive creaking emptiness of the Destroyer, only to discover that its original population has not disappeared at all -- and that they've been waiting for them.

Bloomsbury Academic Men We Reaped A1071306064
Bloomsbury Academic Men We Reaped A1071306064
Bloomsbury presents Men We Reaped by Jesmyn Ward, read by January LaVoy. _______________ 'A brutal, moving memoir … Anyone who emerges from America's black working-class youth with words as fine as Ward's deserves a hearing' – Guardian 'Raw, beautiful and dangerous' – New York Times Book Review 'Lavishly endowed with literary craft and hard-earned wisdom' – Time _______________ The beautiful, haunting memoir from Jesmyn Ward, the first woman to win the National Book Award twice 'And then we heard the rain falling and that was the blood falling; and when we came to get in the crops, it was dead men that we reaped' – Harriet Tubman Jesmyn Ward's acclaimed memoir shines a light on the community she comes from in the small town of DeLisle, Mississippi, a place of quiet beauty and fierce attachment. Here, in the space of four years, she lost five young black men dear to her, including her beloved brother – to accidents, murder and suicide. Their deaths were seemingly unconnected, yet their lives had been connected by identity and place. As Jesmyn dealt with these losses, she came to a staggering truth: the fates of these young men were predetermined by who they were and where they were from, because racism and economic struggle breed a certain kind of bad luck. The agonising reality brought Jesmyn to write, at last, their true stories and her own. _______________ 'Acute and often beautiful' – Financial Times 'Haunting' – Laurie Penny, New Statesman Books of the Year 'Elegiac, rage-filled, and uncommonly brave' – Vogue 'A brilliant book about beauty and death' – Los Angeles Times 'Essential' – San Francisco Chronicle 'Burns with brilliance' – Harper's Bazaar 'Unvarnished and penetrating' – Elle
