New York Review Of Books The Pumpkin Eater A1013472088
The Pumpkin Eater is a surreal black comedy about the wages of adulthood and the pitfalls of parenthood. A nameless woman speaks, at first from the precarious perch of a therapist's couch, and her smart, wry, confiding, immensely sympathetic voice immediately captures and holds our attention. She is the mother of a vast, swelling brood of children, also nameless, and the wife of a successful screenwriter, Jake Armitage. The Armitages live in the city, but they are building a great glass tower in the country in which to settle down and live happily ever after. But could that dream be nothing more than a sentimental delusion? At the edges of vision the spectral children come and go, while our heroine, alert to the countless gradations of depression and the innumerable forms of betrayal, tries to make sense of it all: doctors, husbands, movie stars, bodies, grocery lists, nursery rhymes, messes, aging parents, memories, dreams, and breakdowns. How to pull it all together? Perhaps you start by falling apart.

I really should've known better than to play around with that old book of spells... How was I supposed to know that the incantations scrawled inside of it worked? That the first one I read would open a portal into a demon plane - or that the next one was an unbreakable vow to the seven foot tall shadow monster I unwittingly summoned into my bedroom? He says his name is Malphas, that he's something called a Sombra demon, and I'm his mate. Monster, demon... whatever he is, his muscles are bigger than my head, and that club between his legs... I don't know if mate means the same thing to him as it does me, but he's gotta be kidding. Spoiler alert: he's not. Mal has been waiting for more than a thousand years for the one woman meant for him. He's convinced that's me, and he's willing to do anything to prove it. And maybe there's something really wrong with me because, before long, I find myself eager to let him try... * Mated to the Monster is the first in a monster romance series about the Sombra demons, a race of shadow-based monsters who will do anything to claim their females. Mal and Shannon might come from different worlds, but when it comes to fate, lust, and forever... they might just be a perfect match.

‘Swansong is the real thing , right from the start: spiky, strange and contemporary, but always with a dark undertow of myth and folklore tugging at its telling…this is a brilliant novel by a writer - and musician - of frankly alarming talent.’ Robert Macfarlane In this stunningly assured, immersive and vividly atmospheric first novel from the celebrated musician, a young woman comes face-to-face with the volatile, haunted wilderness of the Scottish Highlands. Polly Vaughan is trying to escape the ravaging guilt of a disturbing incident in London by heading north to the Scottish Highlands. As soon as she arrives, this spirited, funny, alert young woman goes looking for drink, drugs and sex – finding them all quickly, and unsatisfactorily, with the barman in the only pub. She also finds a fresh kind of fear, alone in this eerie, myth-drenched landscape. Increasingly prone to visions or visitations – floating white shapes in the waters of the loch or in the woods – she is terrified and fascinated by a man she came across in the forest on her first evening, apparently tearing apart a bird. Who is this strange loner? And what is his sinister secret? Kerry Andrew is a fresh new voice in British fiction; one that comes from a deep understanding of the folk songs, mythologies and oral traditions of these islands. Her powerful metaphoric language gives Swansong a charged, hallucinatory quality that is unique, uncanny and deeply disquieting.
Andre Wellmann In the Realm of Sandworms A1076049805
The ground trembles. The silence kills. And beneath the sand, something is hungry. In the desolate desert town of Dust Creek, Arizona, life is simple - until the earth begins to quake without warning. Strange tremors ripple through the ground, and people start to vanish. No signs. No bodies. Just empty buildings and the quiet hum of something massive moving below. Ray Carter, a former construction worker turned reluctant hero, is among the first to discover the horrifying truth: giant, blind Sandworms - ancient predators that sense vibration - are awakening beneath the surface. Fast, ruthless, and impossible to predict, they erupt from the sand to devour anything that moves. As panic spreads and the death toll rises, Ray must lead a small group of survivors in a desperate fight for survival. With no help coming and the town cut off, their only hope is to stay silent, stay alert - and stay off the ground. "In the Realm of Sandworms - The Ground is Shaking" is a pulse-pounding creature horror thriller that blends the relentless tension of Tremors with the raw survivalism of The Mist. Featuring brutal attacks, claustrophobic suspense, and explosive desert action, this novel delivers pure monster mayhem from the first page to the last. Fans of classic creature features, monster apocalypse stories, and gritty survival horror will find their next obsession in this blood-soaked battle for the surface.

First published in 1859-60, The Woman in White is a landmark of Victorian sensation fiction, combining Gothic unease, legal intrigue, and domestic realism into a masterfully engineered mystery. Through multiple narrators, diaries, letters, and testimonies, Collins constructs a documentary style that gives the novel both immediacy and forensic precision. Its plot of mistaken identity, inheritance fraud, incarceration, and female vulnerability exposes the anxieties beneath respectable middle-class society. Wilkie Collins, a close friend and collaborator of Charles Dickens, was unusually alert to the theatrical possibilities of narrative and the injustices embedded in Victorian law. His legal training, fascination with crime, and sympathy for women constrained by marriage and property systems deeply inform the novel. Collins's unconventional life and skepticism toward social orthodoxy helped him imagine characters who resist the moral and institutional certainties of his age. This novel is essential reading for anyone interested in the origins of detective fiction, psychological suspense, or the social critique of the Victorian novel. It rewards both casual readers and scholars with its intricate plotting, memorable figures, and enduring questions about truth, power, and identity.
Yale University Press Jane Austen's Wardrobe A1065296030
Hilary Davidson delves into the clothing of one of the world's great authors, providing unique and intimate insight into her everyday life and material world What did Jane Austen wear? Acclaimed dress historian and Austen expert Hilary Davidson reveals, for the first time, the wardrobe of one of the world's most celebrated authors. Despite her acknowledged brilliance on the page, Jane Austen has all too often been accused of dowdiness in her appearance. Drawing on Austen's 161 known letters, as well as her own surviving garments and accessories, this book assembles examples of the variety of clothes she would have possessed--from gowns and coats to shoes and undergarments--to tell a very different story. The Jane Austen that Hilary Davidson discovers is alert to fashion trends but thrifty and eager to reuse and repurpose clothing. Her renowned irony and wit pepper her letters, which describe clothes, shopping, and taste. Jane Austen's Wardrobe offers the rare pleasure of a glimpse inside the closet of a stylish dresser and perpetually fascinating writer.

In November 1983, Soviet nuclear forces went on high alert. After months nervously watching increasingly assertive NATO military posturing, Soviet intelligence agencies in Western Europe received flash telegrams reporting alarming activity on U.S. bases. In response, the Soviets began planning for a countdown to a nuclear first strike by NATO on Eastern Europe. And then Able Archer 83, a vast NATO war game exercise that modeled a Soviet attack on NATO allies, ended. What the West didn't know at the time was that the Soviets thought Operation Able Archer 83 was real and were actively preparing for a surprise missile attack from NATO. This close scrape with Armageddon was largely unknown until last October when the U.S. government released a ninety-four-page presidential analysis of Able Archer that the National Security Archive had spent over a decade trying to declassify. Able Archer 83 is based upon more than a thousand pages of declassified documents that archive staffer Nate Jones has pried loose from several U.S. government agencies and British archives, as well as from formerly classified Soviet Politburo and KGB files, vividly recreating the atmosphere that nearly unleashed nuclear war.
