Workman Love in a F*cked-Up World A1071833061
Workman Love in a F*cked-Up World A1071833061
We all know it takes guts and creativity to fight for justice. But how often do we put those same qualities to work in our most intimate relationships? In this inspiring self-help handbook, luminary trans activist and author of Mutual Aid Dean Spade dares us to be the change we want to see— both out in the world, and in our closest connections. Around the globe, people are faced with spiraling crises, from the pandemic and climate change-induced disasters to the ongoing horrors of mass incarceration, racist policing, endemic gender violence, and severe wealth inequality. Many of us feel mobilized to organize and collectively combat these issues on both a personal and political level, often dedicating our lives to the fight for collective liberation. But even those of us who long for change seem to have trouble when it comes to interpersonal relationships. Too often we think of our political values as outward-facing positions again dominant systems of power. Rarely, if ever, do we pursue the same kind of justice close to home, in our personal connections. Many activist projects and resistance groups fall apart because people treat each other poorly, trying desperately to live out the cultural myths about dating and relationships that we are fed from an early age. How do we divest from the idea that one romantic partner will be the solution to all our problems? How do we separate our expectations of love from the troubling dynamics left to us by our parents? How do we bring our best thinking about freedom and justice into step with our desires for healing and connection? Lifelong activist and educator Dean Spade dares us to decide that our interpersonal actions are not separate from our politics of liberation and resistance. Love in a F*cked-Up World is a resounding call to action and a practical manifesto for how to combat cultural scripts and take our relationships into our own hands, preparing us for the work of changing the world.

Penguin US Spineless A1049503535
"A book full of wonders" —Helen Macdonald, author of H Is for Hawk "Witty, insightful. . . .The story of jellyfish. . . is a significant part of the environmental story. Berwald's engaging account of these delicate, often ignored creatures shows how much they matter to our oceans' future." —New York Times Book Review Jellyfish have been swimming in our oceans for well over half a billion years, longer than any other animal that lives on the planet. They make a venom so toxic it can kill a human in three minutes. Their sting—microscopic spears that pierce with five million times the acceleration of gravity—is the fastest known motion in the animal kingdom. Made of roughly 95 percent water, some jellies are barely perceptible virtuosos of disguise, while others glow with a luminescence that has revolutionized biotechnology. Yet until recently, jellyfish were largely ignored by science, and they remain among the most poorly understood of ocean dwellers. More than a decade ago, Juli Berwald left a career in ocean science to raise a family in landlocked Austin, Texas, but jellyfish drew her back to the sea. Recent, massive blooms of billions of jellyfish have clogged power plants, decimated fisheries, and caused millions of dollars of damage. Driven by questions about how overfishing, coastal development, and climate change were contributing to a jellyfish population explosion, Juli embarked on a scientific odyssey. She traveled the globe to meet the biologists who devote their careers to jellies, hitched rides on Japanese fishing boats to see giant jellyfish in the wild, raised jellyfish in her dining room, and throughout it all marveled at the complexity of these alluring and ominous biological wonders. Gracefully blending personal memoir with crystal-clear distillations of science, Spineless is the story of how Juli learned to navigate and ultimately embrace her ambition, her curiosity, and her passion for the natural world. She discovers that jellyfish science is more than just a quest for answers. It’s a call to realize our collective responsibility for the planet we share.

Review Headline The Sea Stone Sisters A1075523365
It all begins with The Sea Stone Sisters. In this spellbinding series Eleanor Buchanan intricately weaves together the stories of four sisters and their descendants scattered across the globe from the Scottish home that they all yearn to return to. Four great stones once stood on a remote Scottish headland - the Sisters of Skara. Legend has it they were raised by a grieving father, to guide his abducted daughters home. A curse was placed on anyone who laid the stones low: their family, too, would be scattered to the winds, never to find their way home. Let yourself be whisked away from Scotland to Ceylon and from Australia to London in this epic tale about family mysteries, unexpected love and enduring courage. 1931. When businessman Charles Blackmore takes down the stones on the Scottish headland, he soon finds his fortune lost, his wife dead and his four daughters torn apart. They each cling to a ring they inherited from their mother, alongside the hope of one day reuniting. Iris, the eldest daughter, is the first to leave, making for Ceylon in search of a long-lost uncle who might help keep the family together. Promising to return as soon as she can, her journey takes her from the exotic beauty of Ceylon to the vast Australian outback, but will it ever take her home? Present day. Roz moves to London from Australia with one singular personal item - an old ring that used to belong to her mother. Feeling adrift, everything changes when she discovers a painting of old standing stones which ignites an uncanny connection to the ring on her finger. Hunting down the history of this painting, Roz starts to piece together the story of Iris's journey, unravelling her own family history in the process. She soon learns that the past has a power that cannot be easily escaped. The Sea Stone Sisters is the first of a sweeping and moving series, perfect for fans of Soraya Lane, Lucinda Riley and Clare Flynn.

GRIN John Steinbeck's "The Grapes of Wrath". An Analysis A1039022474
GRIN John Steinbeck's "The Grapes of Wrath". An Analysis A1039022474
Facharbeit (Schule) aus dem Jahr 2001 im Fachbereich Didaktik - Englisch - Literatur, Werke, Note: 1,0, Kreisgymnasium Halle (12. Klasse), Veranstaltung: Englisch Leistungskurs, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: ¿The Grapes of Wrath¿ has surely had a deep impact not only on world¿s literature, but also on the consciousness of the working class in general. Millions of sold copies worldwide imply that Steinbeck¿s thinking must have impressed and influenced a lot of people around the globe indeed. Thus, ¿The Grapes of Wrath¿ has inspired activist songwriters such as Bruce Springsteen and Woodie Guthrie to write songs in order to put the spirit of the book into sound. While the latter of these two musicians had not yet read the book, but only seen the movie when he wrote a song that simply summarizes the storyline, Bruce Springsteen has managed to compose an exceedingly moving and popular piece of music. ¿The Ghost of Tom Joad¿ carries on the hope which is contained in the novel (just to anticipate a bit the answer to the sub-question of this work¿s title). The struggling of the poor and unprivileged is today not less existent than at the time when ¿The Grapes of Wrath¿ takes place. However, today¿s face of the world has been changed by the effects of information technology. The globalization of markets and the ongoing merging of corporations, resulting in economic giants with fierce extent of power, the WTO and the World Bank are expressions of an economic system which still legitimizes the exploitation of have-nots by a shrinking wealthy upper-class. Nevertheless, there is a movement and a progress visible (though not on screens dominated by corporate media). Resistance against exploitation forms wherever people understand the need and possibility to organize. ¿The Grapes of Wrath¿ contributes a lot to making people realize this. Last but not least, it conveys a spirit that strengthens people¿s will to survive and show compassion for each other, which is why i would like to reflect on this book.

Penguin Books Ltd World Order A1035338138
Penguin Books Ltd World Order A1035338138
In World Order, Henry Kissinger - one of the leading practitioners of world diplomacy and author of On China - makes his monumental investigation into the 'tectonic plates' of global history and state relations. World Order is the summation of Henry Kissinger's thinking about history, strategy and statecraft. As if taking a perspective from far above the globe, it examines the great tectonic plates of history and the motivations of nations, explaining the attitudes that states and empires have taken to the rest of the world from the formation of Europe to our own times. Kissinger identifies four great 'world orders' in history - the European, Islamic, Chinese and American. Since the end of Charlemagne's empire, and especially since the Peace of Westphalia in 1648, Europeans have striven for balance in international affairs, first in their own continent and then globally. Islamic states have looked to their destined expansion over regions populated by unbelievers, a position exemplified today by Iran under the ayatollahs. For over 2000 years the Chinese have seen 'all under Heaven' as being tributary to the Chinese Emperor. America views itself as a 'city on a hill', a beacon to the world, whose values have universal validity. How have these attitudes evolved and how have they shaped the histories of their nations, regions, and the rest of the world? What has happened when they have come into contact with each other? How have they balanced legitimacy and power at different times? What is the condition of each in our contemporary world, and how are they shaping relations between states now? To answer these questions Henry Kissinger draws upon a lifetime's historical study and unmatched experience as a world statesman. His account is shot through with observations about how historical change takes place, how some leaders shape their times and others fail to do so, and how far states can stray from the ideas which define them. World Order is a masterpiece of narrative, analysis and portraits of great historical actors that only Henry Kissinger could have written.

Edited by the Sustainability Institute’s Diana Wright, this essential primer brings systems thinking out of the realm of computers and equations and into the tangible world, showing readers how to develop the systems-thinking skills that thought leaders across the globe consider critical for 21st-century life. Some of the biggest problems facing the world—war; hunger, poverty, and environmental degradation—are essentially system failures. They cannot be solved by fixing one piece in isolation from the others, because even seemingly minor details have enormous power to undermine the best efforts of too-narrow thinking. While readers will learn the conceptual tools and methods of systems thinking, the heart of the book is grander than methodology. Donella Meadows was known as much for nurturing positive outcomes as she was for delving into the science behind global dilemmas. She reminds readers to pay attention to what is important, not just what is quantifiable, to stay humble, and to stay a learner. In a world growing ever more complicated, crowded, and interdependent, Thinking in Systems helps readers avoid confusion and helplessness, the first step toward finding proactive and effective solutions. “Thinking in Systems is required reading for anyone hoping to run a successful company, community, or country. Learning how to think in systems is now part of change-agent literacy. And this is the best book of its kind.”—Hunter Lovins

Harper Collins (US) The Bright Ages A1062965738
Harper Collins (US) The Bright Ages A1062965738
"The beauty and levity that Perry and Gabriele have captured in this book are what I think will help it to become a standard text for general audiences for years to come….The Bright Ages is a rare thing—a nuanced historical work that almost anyone can enjoy reading.”—Slate "Incandescent and ultimately intoxicating." —The Boston Globe A lively and magisterial popular history that refutes common misperceptions of the European Middle Ages, showing the beauty and communion that flourished alongside the dark brutality—a brilliant reflection of humanity itself. The word “medieval” conjures images of the “Dark Ages”—centuries of ignorance, superstition, stasis, savagery, and poor hygiene. But the myth of darkness obscures the truth; this was a remarkable period in human history. The Bright Ages recasts the European Middle Ages for what it was, capturing this 1,000-year era in all its complexity and fundamental humanity, bringing to light both its beauty and its horrors. The Bright Ages takes us through ten centuries and crisscrosses Europe and the Mediterranean, Asia and Africa, revisiting familiar people and events with new light cast upon them. We look with fresh eyes on the Fall of Rome, Charlemagne, the Vikings, the Crusades, and the Black Death, but also to the multi-religious experience of Iberia, the rise of Byzantium, and the genius of Hildegard and the power of queens. We begin under a blanket of golden stars constructed by an empress with Germanic, Roman, Spanish, Byzantine, and Christian bloodlines and end nearly 1,000 years later with the poet Dante—inspired by that same twinkling celestial canopy—writing an epic saga of heaven and hell that endures as a masterpiece of literature today. The Bright Ages reminds us just how permeable our manmade borders have always been and of what possible worlds the past has always made available to us. The Middle Ages may have been a world “lit only by fire” but it was one whose torches illuminated the magnificent rose windows of cathedrals, even as they stoked the pyres of accused heretics. The Bright Ages contains an 8-page color insert.

Random House N.Y. Fat Swim A1076351782
Random House N.Y. Fat Swim A1076351782
A “stunning; at times shocking collection” (The Boston Globe) of linked stories following a cast of characters navigating bodies, queerness, power, and sex—with radical results—from the bestselling author of Housemates. “These interconnected stories blitzed my brain and gut. Prepare to be shaken.”—Kiese Laymon, author of Long Division and Heavy A MOST ANTICIPATED BOOK OF 2026: Playboy, Literary Hub, Debutiful, LGBTQ Reads, Electric Lit, SheReads/The Stacks, Publishers Lunch With a brash and stylish voice that implicates and confronts the reader, Emma Copley Eisenberg wades into the contradictions, joys, and violence of a modern world shaped by looking and watching, examining how our hungers can both hijack and crack open our lives. In the title story, a young girl looks to a group of fat women at her local pool to teach her about her changing body. In “Swiffer Girl;” a woman agrees to try for a baby with her partner, only to suddenly find herself haunted by the viral sex video that made the rounds during high school—a video indelibly tied to her own sense of self. In other stories, an obscure fat makeup vlogger’s strange friendship with a middle schooler forces her to reflect on her past life at a toxic beauty startup, a boomer retiree tries to understand her nonbinary child’s gender and polyamory, and a trans librarian takes a job as assistant to a famous science fiction writer only to find himself screening hookups on his octogenarian employer’s behalf. For better or for worse, these stories counsel, none of us can leave our bodies behind: they remind us what it is to be alive. As the characters in Fat Swim dance into and out of each other’s lives—and through and around Philadelphia—they seek connections and experiences that remind them of that fact, culminating in a reality-bending, tour de force finale, “Camp Sensation.” Eisenberg, whose fiction “should be studied by every contemporary author as the finest departure from the fatphobic hellscape of fiction that exists” (Electric Literature), has a singular vision, and Fat Swim is her most incisive and provocative work yet.
