Bloomsbury Academic Hood Feminism A1058370055
'It is absolutely brilliant, I think every woman should read it' PANDORA SYKES, THE HIGH LOW 'My wish is that every white woman who calls herself a feminist will read this book in a state of hushed and humble respect ... Essential reading' ELIZABETH GILBERT All too often the focus of mainstream feminism is not on basic survival for the many, but on increasing privilege for the few. Meeting basic needs is a feminist issue. Food insecurity, the living wage and access to education are feminist issues. The fight against racism, ableism and transmisogyny are all feminist issues. White feminists often fail to see how race, class, sexual orientation and disability intersect with gender. How can feminists stand in solidarity as a movement when there is a distinct likelihood that some women are oppressing others? Insightful, incendiary and ultimately hopeful, Hood Feminism is both an irrefutable indictment of a movement in flux and also clear-eyed assessment of how to save it.

FROM THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF JOHN & PAUL A TIMES BOOK OF THE YEAR Ian Leslie's acclaimed new book reveals the secrets of how to disagree without fighting, and shows how mastering the techniques of productive disagreement can transform every aspect of our lives. 'One of my favourite writers . . . Beautifully argued, desperately needed.' MALCOLM GLADWELL 'Invaluable. The world will be a better place if everyone reads this book.' PHILPPA PERRY 'A cool bath of sanity in a world of frenzied hot takes.' HELEN LEWIS 'Perspective-shifting in important ways.' OLIVER BURKEMAN What is the secret of happy relationships? How do companies build collaborative cultures? What lies behind some of the greatest scientific and creative breakthroughs? The surprising answer is: conflict. Whether it's at work, at home or in public, confronting our differences is the only way to make the most out of them. How to Disagree is about how to do that successfully. Drawing on essential lessons from world-class experts on how to disagree well and combining them with inspiring stories of productive disagreements from science, technology and the arts, Ian Leslie reveals how we can reap the benefits of diverse viewpoints in an era that feels more divided than ever. 'I nodded and underlined my way through the book's nearly 300 pages of eloquent, thoughtful advice . . . If you want to argue better, Leslie's manual will be invaluable.' THE TIMES 'Leslie has a way of bringing fresh perspectives and telling anecdotes to obdurate subjects. Here he talks to everyone from hostage negotiators to divorce lawyers to show how conflict has driven successful companies and technological advances, and to offer ways to harness it in daily life.' NEW STATESMAN *** How to Disagree was previously published in 2021 under the title Conflicted.
LAP LAMBERT Academic Publishing Takács, A: Audiatur et Altera Pars A1023155361
The main idea of this paper could be summarized by the Latin proverb: Audiatur et altera pars - literally, hear the other side. One of my greatest concerns is that history is studied from only one perspective; as the well known saying goes history is written by the winners. This paper will be controversial because I explore the positive side of the Canadian Indian residential schools. I am fully aware of the fact that residential schools were about suffering, pain and often about sexual abuse. I do not intend to question the survivals' account of horror or call in doubt their validity. On the other hand, in order to do justice to all former students of residential schools I consider it essential to show the other side of the coin. We were taught by history books which were written from one perspective and it was said that if we want to understand residential schools we will have to read more about them to have a clear view. But books are often edited from one perspective. Whose perspective is it? Are we entitled to neglect the other side? Do we have the right to decide even if the the other side is not known...

When Jens Stoltenberg took office as secretary general of NATO in 2014, the world was already changing. What followed was a decade marked by war, diplomatic crises, and decisions that helped shape the West's shared security. On My Watch takes readers behind closed doors and offers rare insight into how the world's most powerful military alliance handles crises. Stoltenberg describes the effort to keep NATO united and addresses key issues, such as the war in Ukraine, NATO's withdrawal from Afghanistan, relations with Russia and China, and cooperation with world leaders including Angela Merkel, Donald Trump, and Volodymyr Zelenskyy. This is not a book about division. It is a story of unity, of friendship-and of why NATO still matters. Through his reflections on disagreements and dilemmas, he offers a unique view into the art of diplomacy and the hard choices that must be made when global peace is at stake. He ultimately shows why openness is essential to preserve cohesion-and to face the challenges of tomorrow.
HarperCollins is proud to present its range of best-loved, essential classics. 'I snapped the switch, but there was nobody there. Then I saw something in the far corner which made me drop my cigar and fall into a cold sweat.' When Richard Hannay is warned of an assassination plot that has the potential to take Britain into a war, and then a few days later discovers the murdered body of the American that warned him in his flat, he becomes a prime suspect. He flees to the moors of Scotland and a spirited chase begins as he is pursued by the police and the German spies involved with stealing British plans. Buchan's tale unfolds into one of the seminal and most influential 'chase' books, mimicked by many, yet unrivalled in the tension and mystery created by his writing. Buchan reveres Hannay as an ordinary man who puts his country's good before his own and the classic themes of the novel influenced many films and subsequent 'man-on-the-run' novels.

AS SEEN IN THE NETFLIX DOCUMENTARY THE SOCIAL DILEMMA A WIRED "ALL-TIME FAVORITE BOOK" A FINANCIAL TIMES BEST BOOK "THE CONSCIENCE OF SILICON VALLEY"- GQ "Profound . . . Lanier shows the tactical value of appealing to the conscience of the individual. In the face of his earnest argument, I felt a piercing shame about my own presence on Facebook. I heeded his plea and deleted my account." - Franklin Foer, The New York Times Book Review "Mixes prophetic wisdom with a simple practicality . . . Essential reading." - The New York Times (Summer Reading Preview) You might have trouble imagining life without your social media accounts, but virtual reality pioneer Jaron Lanier insists that we're better off without them. In Ten Arguments for Deleting Your Social Media Accounts Right Now, Lanier, who participates in no social media, offers powerful and personal reasons for all of us to leave these dangerous online platforms. Lanier's reasons for freeing ourselves from social media's poisonous grip include its tendency to bring out the worst in us, to make politics terrifying, to trick us with illusions of popularity and success, to twist our relationship with the truth, to disconnect us from other people even as we are more "connected" than ever, to rob us of our free will with relentless targeted ads. How can we remain autonomous in a world where we are under continual surveillance and are constantly being prodded by algorithms run by some of the richest corporations in history that have no way of making money other than being paid to manipulate our behavior? How could the benefits of social media possibly outweigh the catastrophic losses to our personal dignity, happiness, and freedom? Lanier remains a tech optimist, so while demonstrating the evil that rules social media business models today, he also envisions a humanistic setting for social networking that can direct us toward a richer and fuller way of living and connecting with our world.
Medicine advances ever faster, and with it a capacity not just to overcome sickness, but to transform the nature of life itself. Beginning in antiquity, Roy Porter's titanic history examines the traditions of both East and West to chart how this revolution came about and how life for human beings, in some parts of the world at least, has ceased to be nasty, brutish and short. 'The Greatest Benefit to Mankind' becomes from the moment of publication the standard work on its subject. It is also a magnificent entertainment and a delight to read. "A superb book - fluent, lucid, scary and even funny...essential reading; first, because Porter is a brilliant and central anatomiser of our present predicament and second, because, to a large extent, medicine 'is' our present predicament - the violent battlefield at the intersection of what we think we know and what we think we are. There is no more urgent place to be, no more, in the highest sense, topical book to read." BRYAN APPLEYARD, SUNDAY TIMES "Hypochondriac heaven - a gripping, scholarly, fact-packed, must-have book." VAL HENNESSY, DAILY MAIL "A monumental work... Porter's deftness in synthesising both historical and technical material, and his ability to give flesh to his arguments, turns what might have been a stolid narrative into an enthralling story...Magnificent." KENAN MALIK, INDEPENDENT ON SUNDAY "Whether you are interested in the advent of the stethoscope, the history of yellow fever, the bubonic plague or coronary heart disease, the feminist influence on medicine, drug abuse, chilbearing or cancer, this book provides the historical background to these and other medical questions...this is a first-class introduction to medical history. Like a well constructed broadsheet leader, it excites thought and discussion." THOMAS STUTTAFORD, THE TIMES "A splendid text that will be of huge value to most professional practitioners, students and general readers. Certainly no medical student in the English-speaking world will want to be without it...I cannot but marvel at this magnificent book, which, after it has left my bedside, will take pride of place on my reference shelf." JOHN CORNWELL, LITERARY REVIEW "Roy Porter has succeeded triumphantly...In recent discussions surrounding the Booker Prize, contemporary readers were accused of deserting fiction for biography or history. This compulsively readable book makes it easy to see why." STEPHEN LOCK, EVENING STANDARD

BoD – Books on Demand The Ultimate Guide to Teaching Niches A1051895056
Freelance pedagogical businesses face these challenges daily: * How can I gain visibility on the global teaching market to attract a steady stream of new students? * How do I secure an adequate income from my work as a freelance teacher? * How do I avoid capitulating to the three-year death cycle and lose my freelance teaching career? What you don't need are theoretical discussions about niches and specialising. These require you to locate your 'ideal client profile' or requires you to find 'the sweet spot' between what you love (your passion) and the price people are prepared to pay. These approaches are too vague for busy freelancers. What you need instead, is a practical hands-on system that works. The Ultimate Guide to Teaching Niches lays out a precise system showing what all freelance teachers, trainers, and coaches need to do to define a teaching niche that helps them to confidently stand out in a crowded teaching marketplace. * It clarifies what information is essential, how it attracts new students, and how it enables freelancers to monetise their teaching experience. * It provides you with the skill to write up the text for your teaching niche that will catch the interest of new students searching for private instructors. All lists, tables and questions are available in both Adobe PDF and MS Word formats. Contact links to Janine are in the back of the book.

The tender memoir of the forty-three years Siri Hustvedt spent with her husband, writer, poet and filmmaker Paul Auster - from their first encounter in 1980s New York through the highs and lows of love, family and grief 'The delight to be found in Hustvedt's book arises because so much of the landscape revealed is one of love. Love of life, love of the world, love of family... Ghost Stories will console you for the losses you have suffered, and for the ones you know - we all know - are yet to come' OBSERVER 'A profound and forthright meditation on love and loss, unique in our literature' INDEPENDENT 'Rich with accounts of their life together' SUNDAY TIMES 'Distinctive and genuinely moving' NEW YORK TIMES Ghost Stories is Siri Hustvedt's most personal work yet, a searing and intimate meditation on grief, memory and enduring love, written in the aftermath of the death of her husband, writer, poet and filmmaker Paul Auster. It is a patchwork-quilt book that stitches together memories from over forty years of love and life together: journal entries Siri wrote between November 2023 and 3 May 2024, the day of Paul's funeral; emails Siri sent to friends during his cancer treatment; notes Paul sent her over the course of their relationship; and three love letters Siri wrote to him in 1981, when he left her for a period of nine or ten days to return to his former life with his first wife and son. The book also contains Paul Auster's last ever piece of writing - the first thirty-five pages of what he hoped would be a small book of letters to Siri's and his grandson, Miles Auster Hustvedt Ostrander, born on 1 January 2024. Unflinching, tender and wise, this is the full-bodied story of Siri Hustvedt and Paul Auster's life together, an exploration of how grief unmoors time and how the intimacy of a shared life continues to mark the everyday. 'A remarkable achievement' LOUISE KENNEDY 'A deeply moving memoir, raw with loss, yet luminous with love' SARAH WATERS 'What a kind, honest book. What a gift of love' DAVID MITCHELL 'Essential reading from an all-time great' SARA COLLINS A note from Siri 'I began writing Ghost Stories shortly after my husband, Paul Auster, died on April 30th 2024. My meditations on Paul's cancer, his death, my grief, the potent feeling I had of his presence on the day he was buried, and my memories from the years we spent together are interwoven with several texts that were written before he died: twelve letters I wrote to friends during his cancer treatment; journal entries I wrote between early November, 2023 and May 3, 2024; and three love letters I wrote to Paul in 1981, when he left me for a period of nine or ten days to return to his former life. Although I knew Paul had saved those letters, I hadn't read them since they were written and had only a foggy recollection of their content. In the last month of his life, Paul began writing what he hoped would be a small book of letters to our grandson, Miles Auster Hustvedt Ostrander, who was born on January 1st, 2024. Paul was too weak to finish it as planned, but the thirty-five pages he did manage to write are interwoven in this book. I want to stress that Paul's text is not an appendix to mine but an integral part of the book as a whole. Because the memoir turns on attachment, betweenness, and dialogue, all crucial to the love affair that lasted forty-three years, the insertion of one author's text into another's, is, in this case, essential to the memoir's overall meaning.' Praise for Siri Hustvedt 'Hustvedt is that rare artist, a writer of high intelligence, profound sensuality and a less easily definable capacity for which the only word I can find is wisdom' Salman Rushdie 'It is Hustvedt's gift to write with exemplary clarity of what is by necessity unclear' Hilary Mantel 'She's a twenty-first-century Virginia Woolf, with many intellectual and creative rooms of her own' Literary Review
