Im Jahr 2012 avancierte mit The Avengers sogar ein Superheldenfilm zum kommerziell erfolgreichsten Film des Jahres, ein weiterer, The Dark Knight Rises platzierte sich ebenfalls unter den Top 3 . Es besteht also kein Zweifel: Das Publikum des 21. Jahrhunderts hat ein Verlangen nach kostümierten Helden. Und die Industrie reagiert: Nicht nur werden die bekannten Charaktere wie Batman, Spider-Man oder die X-Men in immer neuen Sequels, Reboots und Prequels in den Kampf gegen Superschurken geschickt, auch bis dato weniger bekannte und obskure Figuren kamen in den letzten zehn Jahren zu Leinwandauftritten. Im Jahr 2010 erschien dann ein Superheld auf der Bildfläche, auf den die Bezeichnungen ¿Super¿ und ¿Held¿ nur noch schwerlich zutreffen: er ist psychisch labil, erschlägt Übeltäter mangels Superkräften mit einer Rohrzange, wird von seinem Sidekick sexuell missbraucht und entstammt nicht einmal einer Comicvorlage. Zudem sollen die Umstände aufgezeigt werden, unter denen sich Genres ausdifferenzieren und (weiter-)entwickeln.
