A few large lizards were running nimbly about in the clefts of an old tree; they could understand one another very well, for they spoke the lizard language. "What a buzzing and a rumbling there is in the elfin hill," said one of the lizards; "I have not been able to close my eyes for two nights on account of the noise; I might just as well have had the toothache, for that always keeps me awake."

Simon & Schuster Dinner for Vampires A1072784028
Simon & Schuster Dinner for Vampires A1072784028
*New York Times bestseller* *One of TIME's 100 Must-Read Books of 2024* A deliciously witty and inspiring memoir by One Tree Hill star Bethany Joy Lenz about her decade in a cult and her quest to break free. In the early 2000s, after years of hard work and determination to breakthrough as an actor, Bethany Joy Lenz was finally cast as one of the leads on the hit drama One Tree Hill. Her career was about to take off, but her personal life was slowly beginning to unravel. What none of the show's millions of fans knew, hidden even from her costars, was her secret double life in a cult. An only child who often had to fend for herself and always wanted a place to belong, Lenz found the safe haven she'd been searching for in a Bible study group with other Hollywood creatives. However, the group soon morphed into something more sinister - a slowly woven web of manipulation, abuse and fear under the guise of a church covenant called The Big House Family. Piece by piece, Lenz began to give away her autonomy, ultimately relocating to the Family's Pacific Northwest compound, overseen by a domineering minister who would convince Lenz to marry one of his sons and steadily drained millions of her TV income without her knowledge. Family 'minders' assigned to her on set, 'Maoist struggle session'-inspired meetings in the basement of a filthy house, and regular counselling with 'Leadership' were just part of the tactics used to keep her loyal. Only when she became a mother did Lenz find the courage to leave and spare her child from a similar fate. After nearly a decade (and with the unlikely help of a One Tree Hill super-fan), she finally managed to escape the family's grip and begin to heal from the deep trauma that forever altered the course of her life. Written with powerful honesty and dark humour, Dinner for Vampires is an inspiring story about the importance of identity, faith and independence.

Bloomsbury Children's Books The Lemon Tree (Young Readers' Edition) A1071393929
Bloomsbury Children's Books The Lemon Tree (Young Readers' Edition) A1071393929
Bloomsbury presents The Lemon Tree (Young Readers' Edition) by Sandy Tolan, read by Rami Medina. The tale of friendship between two people, one Israeli and one Palestinian, that symbolizes the hope for peace in the Middle East. "Makes an incredibly complicated topic comprehensible."—School Library Journal In 1967, a twenty-five-year-old refugee named Bashir Khairi traveled from the Palestinian hill town of Ramallah to Ramla, Israel, with a goal: to see the beloved stone house with the lemon tree in its backyard that he and his family had been forced to leave nineteen years earlier. When he arrived, he was greeted by one of its new residents: Dalia Eshkenazi Landau, a nineteen-year-old Israeli college student whose family had fled Europe following the Holocaust. She had lived in that house since she was eleven months old. On the stoop of this shared house, Dalia and Bashir began a surprising friendship, forged in the aftermath of war and later tested as political tensions ran high and Israelis and Palestinians each asserted their own right to live on this land. Adapted from the award-winning adult book and based on Sandy Tolan's extensive research and reporting, The Lemon Tree is a deeply personal story of two people seeking hope, transformation, and home.

LAP LAMBERT Academic Publishing Govindappa, V: Caecilians of Western Ghats in India- A cytog A1024679707
This book deals with chromosomal analysis of caecilian species, twenty four of them found in the Western Ghats of India and one in the Taita Hills of Kenya of Africa. The mitotic and meiotic chromosomes and their karyotypes, C- banding and NOR- studies; dentition, and sperm morphology are described. Phylogenetic tree for the caecilians is constructed from this data. The dominant role played by the structural chromosomal rearrangements like pericentric and paracentric inversions, Robertsonian translocations, and tandem fusions in the evolution of caecilian species from 2n = 44 to 22 is delineated. In addition, this book provides detailed step by step protocols employed in preparing the chromosomes, analysing their linear differentiation using banding techniques, and establishing interspecies and intergeneric relationships from the evolutionary point of view.

Macmillan USA And I Will Tell You Mine A1077891587
Macmillan USA And I Will Tell You Mine A1077891587
Sophia Bush has always understood the power of stories. She's seen it in the connection millions around the world have had to the women she's played on-screen-including Drs. Sam Griffith on Good Sam and Cass Beckman on Grey's Anatomy, Erin Lindsay on Chicago P.D., and, of course, the iconic, beloved Brooke Davis on One Tree Hill-and in activism, where exposing truths about inequality and power has opened eyes, forced change, and made her a symbol of fearlessness. She's also seen it in her personal life, when her experiences and opinions have been distorted to drive clicks and create drama. Stories are powerful. And now, in And I Will Tell You Mine, these will be shared by the woman they belong to: Sophia herself. With unflinching honesty, she opens up about her bohemian childhood in Los Angeles and the unexpected road from journalism student to actor; the life-changing decade of One Tree Hill, where she navigated relationships on- and off-screen and fought for her character's integrity; the realities of marriage and divorce in the spotlight; and her years in Chicago, where a dream job forced her into two lives-a badge-wearing protector in one, and a woman in need of protecting in the other. She also offers a side of herself that's not often seen: the curious, human, laugh-out-loud-funny Sophia, who boldly defies demands that she stay in her lane instead of pursuing activism; hops on a last-minute flight to attend a dance party at the White House; gathers community and finds chosen family in unexpected places (including a cruise); and makes the most of vacations gone horribly, hilariously wrong. Beautifully written, and at turns both personal and universal, And I Will Tell You Mine is Sophia's unforgettable journey through becoming, un-becoming, and becoming again; embracing the light when the world feels overwhelmingly dark; and finally, joyously, coming home to your truest self.

Titan Publ. Group Ltd. The Ghost Tree A1057371412
From the bestselling author of Alice and Lost Boy comes this chilling dark fantasy Lauren and Miranda have been best friends forever, best friends since they were little girls. Almost every day they would call each other on the phone and one of them would say, "Meet me by the old ghost-tree" and then they would have adventures in the woods, even though there were some parts of the woods they weren't supposed to go. But in the last year things don't seem to be the same as they used to be. Miranda's a lot more interested in boys, for one thing, and Lauren can't stop being angry at her mother since her father died the previous year. Lauren's mother doesn't know what to do with a daughter she never understood, and Miranda's mother is too self-involved to realize what her not-yet-adult daughter is getting herself into. And then there is the town itself - a town where every year one girl dies mysteriously, but no one ever talks about it. A town that has experienced exceptional luck when all the towns around it died as industry and jobs left. A town cursed long ago by something that lingers in the empty house on top of the hill, and in the woods all around, and in the very soil the homes are built on.

Hans Christian Andersen (often referred to in Scandinavia as H. C. Andersen; April 2, 1805 – August 4, 1875) was a Danish author and poet. Although a prolific writer of plays, travelogues, novels, and poems, Andersen is best remembered for his fairy tales.
