As we edge toward the next century, all signs indicate that both the complexity and the pace of change in the global economy will increase Das Problem, das Unternehmen im Kontext derzeitiger exogen und endogen induzierter Veränderungen charakterisiert, liegt nicht allein in der Konsequenz einer laufenden Anpassung der Organisation an sich kontinuierlich ändernde Rahmenbedingungen begründet. Vielmehr verdeutlicht die ansteigende Komplexität und Dynamik der Umweltfaktoren die strategische Notwendigkeit der Schaffung flexibler Organisationen in Richtung einer proaktiven Bewältigung des permanenten Wandels zur Sicherung der Wettbewerbsfähigkeit der Unternehmen. Dieser Umstand führt zunehmend zu einer Aufweichung der Unternehmensstrukturen nach innen durch die Favorisierung von team- und projektbasierten Modellen und der Unternehmensgrenzen nach außen durch das Eingehen von Kooperationsverhältnissen und die Öffnung gegenüber Kunden und Bezugsgruppen. Durch die Emergenz intra- und interorganisatorischer Netzwerke hat die Visible hand im Sinne CHANDLERS (1978) immer mehr an Bedeutung verloren und zum Entstehen einer Vielzahl neuer Organisationskonzepte beigetragen. Diese Konzepte zeichnen sich durch ihren Bezug zur Praxis und die Eigenschaft aus, bei Bewältigung der Umweltkomplexität und -dynamik verstärkt auf organisatorische Gestaltungsprinzipien zurückzugreifen. Die im strategischen Management im Rahmen der Strategieformulierung und -implementierung häufig angewandte Differenzierung zwischen Strategie und Organisation wird dabei nicht vorgenommen. Vielmehr gereicht die Organisation selbst als Wettbewerbsfaktor und bildet durch ihre Ausstattung mit Ressourcen den Ausgangspunkt für die Begründung strategischer Potentiale. In diesem Zusammenhang erweisen sich neue , z. B. auf Internet-Standards basierende Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien als symbiotische Partner des Organisationsdesigns. Sie ermöglichen neue Optionen der strukturellen und prozessualen Gestaltung von Organisationen und erfahren somit als Enabler der Reorganisation strategische Relevanz. Diese Veränderungen begründen ein neues Grenz- und Selbstverständnis der Unternehmen, das sich beispielsweise auf die Funktion des Managements und die Anforderungen an die Organisationsmitglieder auswirkt: Dies [die Bewältigung des sich beschleunigenden Wandels, Anm. d. Verf.] [...] verlangt im Denken und Handeln der Mitarbeiter eine 'neue, grenzüberschreitende Offenheit', die durch ein konsequent auf die Entwicklung von Erfolgspotentialen ausgerichtetes strategisches Management, die flexible und vernetzte Gestaltung struktureller Rahmenbedingungen und eine unternehmenskulturell auf organisationales Lernen ausgerichtete Arbeitswelt getragen wird Die angeführten Entwicklungstendenzen geben den Impuls für das zu behandelnde Konzept der Virtualisierung. Virtualisierung bezeichnet dabei grundsätzlich die Modifikation organisatorischer Strukturen und Prozesse unter dem Einsatz von Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien. Durch das Konzept soll der strategische Nutzen dieser Technologien aufgezeigt werden, indem deren Funktion bei einer strategisch intendierten Organisationsgestaltung herausgearbeitet wird.
