Ingram Publishers Services Women Who Read Are Dangerous A1037393650
What is it about a woman reading that has captivated hundreds of artists over the centuries? Stefan Bollmann's Women Who Read Are Dangerous explores this popular subject in more than seventy artworks--drawings, paintings, photographs, and print--by iconic artists such as Henri Matisse, Edward Hopper, Suzanne Valadon, August Sander, Rembrandt, and many more. As the book's provocative title indicates, a woman reading was once viewed as radical. In chapters, such as "Intimate Moments" and "The Search for Oneself," Bollmann profiles how a woman with a book was once seen as idle or suspect and how women have gained autonomy through reading over the years. Bollmann offers intelligent and engaging commentary on each work of art in Women Who Read Are Dangerous, telling us who the subject is, her relationship to the artist, and even what she is reading. With works ranging from a 1333 Annunciation painting of the angel Gabriel speaking to the Virgin Mary, book in hand, to twentieth-century works, such as a stunning photograph of Marilyn Monroe reading Ulysses, this appealing survey provides a veritable slideshow of the many iterations of a woman and her book--a compelling subject to this day. An excellent gift for graduates, teachers, or Mother's Day, this elegant book should appeal to anyone interested in art, literature, or women's history.
Thames & Hudson David Hockney by David Hockney A1078412484
A special, fiftieth-anniversary edition of David Hockney's witty, candid and revealing account of his life and work. David Hockney by David Hockney was first published in 1976 and grew out of twenty-five hours of recorded conversation with the artist. A carefully crafted, collaborative memoir, this special full-colour edition marks the fiftieth anniversary of the book's first publication. Hockney recounts his early years in Bradford, where he was born, grew up and first went to art school; his years at the Royal College of Art in London, during which he had his breakthrough; his sojourn in California, which inspired some of his best-known paintings, drawings and prints; and his subsequent phase in Paris, where an exhibition at the Louvre established him as a 'continental master'. The book's fascination lies not only in the fact that the text is entirely Hockney's own - so that his life-story is given full clarity - but also that it reproduces his paintings, graphic work and drawings. The story, presented more or less chronologically, is informative and humorous, full of descriptions of his work, anecdotes about himself, other artists and friends, his thoughts about art and his ambiguous relationship with other styles. Above all, it is the story of an artist who is ceaselessly striving to improve his craft and to portray the world around him imaginatively.

Revised and redesigned, Tomkins' book remains the classic Duchamp biography First published to great acclaim in 1996, New Yorker writer and art critic Calvin Tomkins' biography of the influential artist Marcel Duchamp (1887-1968) has been out of print for many years. Now, The Museum of Modern Art, New York, is publishing a new and revised edition of the landmark biography to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Duchamp's first Readymade, "Bicycle Wheel," a later version of which is in MoMA's collection. Duchamp is widely considered one of the most important artists of the twentieth century, yet his personal life remained an enigma throughout his avidly scrutinized career. Tomkins, from his unique vantage point as both an accomplished art critic and a friend of Duchamp's since the late 1950s, presents a piercing portrait of Duchamp, adeptly analyzing his art and career while also recounting his personal life, influences and relationships. This thoroughly researched, eminently readable book is by far the most authoritative Duchamp biography.

An Ongoing Dialogue with Wood Christoph M. Loos (b. Bad Reichenhall, 1959; lives and works in Essen) is a leading exponent of contemporary printmaking. His is one of the most radical positions in woodcutting today. The defining feature of his series is the hybridization of printing block and print: the media on which Loos prints are wafer-thin sheets of wood sliced off a tree trunk previously used as a printing block. This technique imparts a “genetic kinship” with the woodblock to the resulting print. The artist and art theorist’s woodcuts and woodcut installations have been featured in major group exhibitions for two decades. His work is characterized by his sensual and yet conceptual approach to his medium, bridging the gap between graphic art and sculpture. The book presents a survey of Loos’s oeuvre of the past ten years: woodcuts, installations, and drawings. Tobias Burg, Fritz Emslander, Stefan Gronert, Harald Kimpel, Stefan Schweizer, Susan Tallman, and others contributed writings.
THE ARTISTS Philip Martin was born in 1952 and raised in Brighton. He went to Jesus College, Cambridge from 1972 to 1976 where he studied architecture. Glyn Martin, was born in 1955 and studied art at the University of East Anglia in Norwich Both of them began selling their work whilst still at school, but In 1983 they joined forces and formed Cambrooke Fine Art Publishers to publish and market a series of limited edition prints - topographical watercolour paintings of Britain's towns, cities and sites. Over the years the series grew to about 1500 different images and was marketed under the title of Portraits of Britain. They have also completed similar collections of prints in the USA, France, Holland, Belgium, and Ireland. THE PICTURE All scenes in the picture are painted from actual locations. The collage has been assembled from existing prints especially for this jigsaw puzzle, and is not available elsewhere. For the curious, the publishers have added place names to enable identification of the parts of Britain that have been illustrated.
