Discover the marks for your most authentic art! Mixed-media artist Rae Missigman identifies herself as a "mark-maker." Ever in the forefront of her art, organic shapes and graphic marks are what give her work a sense of authenticity. With an adventurous, anything-goes attitude to expressing herself, she is just as likely to use a celery stem, a sewing machine or a cardboard tube as she is a brush, a palette knife or her own hands. In Paint, Play, Explore, Missigman helps you discover those marks that define you as an artist, and weave them into your art in new and interesting ways. Through page after page of creative exploration, you'll become a collector of tools--traditional and unconventional mark-makers that will become an extension of your unique voice. You'll become a tinkerer as you recycle and repurpose, striving to turn something ordinary into something extraordinary. You'll become an explorer as you draw with your non-dominant hand, create "blindly" using resists, stamp with your own handcrafted organic ink, and follow other creative prompts to widen and shape your artistic world. Whether you're just starting your creative adventure or you're looking to break through to the next level, Paint, Play, Explore will set you in motion. Setting the tone with her upbeat vibe and joyful use of color, Missigman pushes you to find your own beautiful artistic "fingerprint" to create work that is interesting, full of life and distinctly yours...and above all, to embrace the journey. "The shapes you choose to etch in your work, free flowing and heartfelt, are a part of what makes the art your own. Tools in hand, your marks will find you and you will begin to recognize yourself in your creations." You're going to need a bigger creative toolbox... • 60+ mark-making tools and mediums • 23 stepped-out demonstrations on collage, one-brush painting, monoprinting, resists, transfers and other fun and versatile mark-making techniques • 4 start-to-finish projects for turning marks into inventive art

A groundbreaking, global survey of queer art, featuring more than 300 artworks made following the introduction of the term ‘homosexual’ in 1869 An unprecedented and historic new book, The First Homosexuals traces the evolution of the homosexual identity through an archive of more than 300 paintings, drawings, sculptures, prints, photographs, and film stills from around the world – many presented in a queer, global, and colonial context for the first time. Between poetics, logics and spaces The work of Julia Hohenwarter (b. 1980, Vienna; lives and works in Vienna) occupy multiple scales, from mounted sculptures, manual prints to large-scale installations. Anne Faucheret describes Hohenwarter's work as such: Her formally reduced and spatially expansive situated installations are at once enigmatic and affirmative, poetic and critical, experiential and analytical. What happens between the foot and the floor, between the pigment and the eye, between the fabric and the skin, between the distemper and the wall, in the moment of their encounter? The artist develops a critical spatial practice in which she negotiates her own personal relationship to space and architecture, challenging the ways (female) bodies are at once entangled in them and produce them. Private Book represents an extension of Hohenwarter's artistic practice and transfers the artist's central technique––the process of manual soot-black printing––to the book format. Following the principles of penetration and repetition, works from the last three years are presented and reproduced in their significant materiality. materiality, create illusions of three-dimensionality, and take up spatial and formal concepts. With texts by the author and artist Kathi Hofer and the curator, author and editor Anne Faucheret.
An accessible presentation of Bacon's entire oeuvre of paintings, punctuated by quotes from eminent artists such as Lucian Freud and Damien Hirst Quarter-bound with cloth, this volume compiles the complete paintings of Francis Bacon, the dissident darling of the 20th-century art world. Over a career spanning more than five decades, Bacon produced almost 500 paintings, including his signature diptychs and triptychs. Francis Bacon: Paintings charts his entire lifetime of radical artistry, from his early Surrealist experiments of the 1920s to the stark, elegiac works completed just before his death. It features over 700 high-quality reproductions that capture the vigor and detail of Bacon's paintings. In lieu of lengthy essays, brief expository texts accompany select works, indexing the emergence of key formal and thematic developments in his practice. Also interspersed throughout are quotes from Bacon as well as from eminent friends, critics and admirers, such as Lucian Freud, Roald Dahl and Damien Hirst. Read together, the quotes animate a critical dialogue on the artist's work and legacy. While Gilles Deleuze purported that Bacon was interested in "...a static or potential violence, a violence of reaction and expression," the artist himself asserted, "I never look for violence...but life is violent; so much more violent than anything I can do!" Emerging from a turbulent inner life and the devastation of World War II, the Irish British painter Francis Bacon (1909-92) created art that is both unsettling and hypnotic, repulsive and irresistible, earning him a reputation as a "master of the grotesque." Eschewing the abstraction preferred in the mid-century, Bacon instead developed a quasi-realist style that rendered the human figure as warped and anguished. Laura Scalabrella Spada completed her PhD at University College London in the Department of History of Art in 2020. Her research focuses on early modern European art, with a particular emphasis on the body and its processes, boundaries and relations. She has published papers on the politics of corporeality and animation in early modern prints and currently works as an independent researcher.
Phaidon Architecture, Not Architecture A1071770486
The first comprehensive monograph on the cross-disciplinary practice including over 100 built and ephemeral works Since its founding in 1981, New York-based studio Diller Scofidio + Renfro (DS+R) has designed some of the world’s most revered civic spaces and cultural institutions. Their practice covers architecture, urban design, installation art, performance, digital media, and print. From the renowned High Line in New York City to the upcoming V&A East Storehouse in London to some of their earliest projects like the Blur building designed for the 2002 Swiss Expo, DS+R explores alternative strategies in space-making that engage and surprise on a global scale. Designed by DS+R as a pair of structurally conjoined volumes, this monograph invites readers to bridge different modes of production and reconsider the limits of architecture. The unique binding allows each volume to be read individually or in parallel by unfolding the book at the spine. Special crossover layouts link the two volumes with shared obsessions. The monograph features layouts by design consultancy 2x4, with photography by Iwan Baan and Matthew Monteith amongst other photographers. It also includes new dialogues with visionaries from other creative fields, including artist Edmund de Waal, art critic and curator Hans Ulrich Obrist, curator Paola Antonelli, actor Alan Cumming, and choreographer William Forsythe.
Scheidegger & Spiess Miles Davis – Three Days in Malibu
On May 26, 2026, Miles Davis (1926–91); an icon of jazz and one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century, would have celebrated his centenary. This book, published to mark the occasion, brings together photographs of Miles Davis taken by German photographer and documentary filmmaker Ralph Quinke between 1971 and 1989. The centerpiece is a reportage that was photographed in 1989: together with Swiss journalist Marco Meier, Quinke traveled to Malibu to accompany the artist for three days and interview him for an issue of Swiss art and culture magazine Du. He got surprisingly close with his camera, taking shots of Miles boxing, in his car, in the kitchen, while painting, sometimes posing, or as an observer of him in conversation. Du’s issue 843 of August 1989, in which Quinke and Meier’s reportage featured, is long out of print and still sought-after by Miles fans. Inspired by German music journalist and jazz expert Arne Reimer, this photo book draws on Quinke’s unique archive material. A revised version of the 1989 interview and a new conversation between Quinke, Meier, and Reimer supplement this “director’s cut.” A selection of the best images that Quinke took of Miles Davis between 1971 and 1987 rounds off this unique homage to one of the most eminent personalities of all musical genres.

The effect of colour in the work of Josef Albers is powerful and unmistakable. Line, colour, area and space all interact with one another, challenging the viewer’s perception. Albers’ series „Homage to the Square“ became the hallmark of the pioneering artist, teacher, art theorist and driving force. The catalogue presents the main works from his multifaceted oeuvre. Josef Albers investigated colour in all its artistic dimensions. He wanted to think colour, tried to determine its weight, discussed its ever-changing faces and the loss of all certainty with his students: “Only appearances are not deceiving”; he wrote. Albers represents an art that learned a new way of seeing. The catalogue begins with his time at the Bauhaus in Weimar and Dessau and spans a long creative career, including major moments in America: encounters with Mexico and the „Homage to the Square“ series. Paintings, prints, furniture, everyday objects, works in glass, photographs and pre-Columbian sculptures are all shown. The juxtaposition of Renaissance sculptures and icons with paintings by Albers underlines the intellectual and spiritual dimension of his art. The effect of Albers on 1960s American art, so-called Minimal Art, is also illuminated.
