Winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award for Autobiography Named a Best Book of the Year by The Observer Back in print, a "fusion of cool, clear-eyed prose and watercolors, photographs and painted portraits" ( Time Out New York ) by celebrated author and artist Leanne Shapton, on a sport that has shaped her life. Intimate with chlorinated space; weightless yet limited; closed off to taste, sound, and most sight; acutely aware of the clock: this is a swimmer's state. When ten-year-old Leanne Shapton joins an Ontario township swim team with her brother, she finds an affinity for its rhythms-and spends years training, making it to the Olympic trials twice. Swimming Studies reflects on her time immersed in a world of rigor and determination, routine and competition, pairing together contemplative essays and paintings. Vivid details of an aquatic life appear: adolescence in suburban Canada, dawn risings for morning practice, bus rides with teammates, a growing collection of swimsuits, dips in lakes and oceans. When she trades athletic pursuits for artistic ones, the metrics of moving through water endure. In these elegant and potent meditations, Shapton renders swimming as a mode of experiencing time, movement, and perspective, capable of shaping our lives in every environment.
The V&A Photography Library is a new series of accessible, introductory volumes to the key themes, works, objects and individuals in photography, illustrated with unprecedented access to the V&A's photography collection, the oldest held by a public museum and one of the largest and finest in the world, now expanded with acquisitions from the Royal Photographic Society collection. Written by Martin Barnes, Senior Curator of Photographs at the V&A, and publishing to coincide with the launch of the V&A's new Photography Centre in autumn 2018, Cameraless Photography presents a concise historical survey of photographic images created without a camera. With over 125 photographs supported by extended commentaries and an introduction, it embraces a chronology spanning the early photographic experiments of the likes of Anna Atkins in the 19th century through the avant-garde photograms of modernists such as Man Ray, to the work of contemporary artists, such as Susan Derges, nearly two centuries later. Visually compelling, Cameraless Photography will be an outstanding introductory overview of the key creative, cameraless processes running throughout the history of photography - including photograms, chemigrams, luminograms, dye destruction prints and more - illustrated by the cameraless work of some of photography's greatest names.

A major new survey that offers fresh insights on Pablo Picasso's artworks, written by a leading authority on the master. Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) was one of the greatest artists of the 20th century. This important new monograph, released to coincide with the fiftieth anniversary of the artist's death, presents Picasso's unparalleled achievements in all media: painting, sculpture, drawing and prints. Art historian and curator Pepe Karmel offers fresh analysis of this great master for a 21st-century audience, considering Picasso's work through the lens of art rather than biography. He demonstrates how Picasso's style, evolving over the course of seven decades, introduced visual languages and narratives that transformed modern art. Arranged chronologically by themes and movements, Looking at Picasso is profusely illustrated with renowned paintings, such as the provocative Les Demoiselles d'Avignon and his monumental Guernica, protesting the horror of war; these are accompanied by numerous lesser-known works, including Picasso's daring sculptures and his animated reinterpretation of Velazquez's 17th-century masterpiece Las Meninas. Numerous exhibitions planned for 2023 will bring Picasso to the forefront. This engaging book will appeal to museum-goers curious to learn more about Picasso's career and anyone interested in modern art.
OTTO Anti-Environments On the Exploration of Unconventional Tools through F / Luis Adrian Borchardt
In Anti-Environments, designer-artist Luis Adrian Borchardt explores how misusing digital tools and alternative design processes can unearth new creative potential and lead to greater autonomy and experimental practice with digital media. This highly unconventional companion on design tools challenges established traditions and methods through friction. Borchardt deliberately examines fields of tension and software limitations to break with conventional ways of use and to open new, unexplored avenues for creativity. He advocates for digital media being understood as dynamic formative systems to be made use of and to be repurposed, rather than as linear processes. Borchardt’s visionary book is itself such an “anti-environment,” produced entirely in Google Sheets and avoiding conventional design programs. In this way, he demonstrates an alternative hybrid publishing approach, allowing readers to print a work from the internet and bind the volume themselves. Borchardt is a trailblazer for a more open, democratic concept of disseminating knowledge and making it accessible. Winner of one of German Stiftung Buchkunst’s 2025 Sponsorship Prizes for Young Book Design and a 2025 International Creative Award. Prize Nominee Work &, Excellent Work at the Tokyo TDC Annual Awards 2026. Longlisted at the German forms of publication 2026 competition.

Between poetics, logics and spaces The work of Julia Hohenwarter (b. 1980, Vienna; lives and works in Vienna) occupy multiple scales, from mounted sculptures, manual prints to large-scale installations. Anne Faucheret describes Hohenwarter's work as such: Her formally reduced and spatially expansive situated installations are at once enigmatic and affirmative, poetic and critical, experiential and analytical. What happens between the foot and the floor, between the pigment and the eye, between the fabric and the skin, between the distemper and the wall, in the moment of their encounter? The artist develops a critical spatial practice in which she negotiates her own personal relationship to space and architecture, challenging the ways (female) bodies are at once entangled in them and produce them. Private Book represents an extension of Hohenwarter's artistic practice and transfers the artist's central technique––the process of manual soot-black printing––to the book format. Following the principles of penetration and repetition, works from the last three years are presented and reproduced in their significant materiality. materiality, create illusions of three-dimensionality, and take up spatial and formal concepts. An accessible presentation of Bacon's entire oeuvre of paintings, punctuated by quotes from eminent artists such as Lucian Freud and Damien Hirst Quarter-bound with cloth, this volume compiles the complete paintings of Francis Bacon, the dissident darling of the 20th-century art world. Over a career spanning more than five decades, Bacon produced almost 500 paintings, including his signature diptychs and triptychs. Francis Bacon: Paintings charts his entire lifetime of radical artistry, from his early Surrealist experiments of the 1920s to the stark, elegiac works completed just before his death. It features over 700 high-quality reproductions that capture the vigor and detail of Bacon's paintings. In lieu of lengthy essays, brief expository texts accompany select works, indexing the emergence of key formal and thematic developments in his practice. Also interspersed throughout are quotes from Bacon as well as from eminent friends, critics and admirers, such as Lucian Freud, Roald Dahl and Damien Hirst. Read together, the quotes animate a critical dialogue on the artist's work and legacy. While Gilles Deleuze purported that Bacon was interested in "...a static or potential violence, a violence of reaction and expression," the artist himself asserted, "I never look for violence...but life is violent; so much more violent than anything I can do!" Emerging from a turbulent inner life and the devastation of World War II, the Irish British painter Francis Bacon (1909-92) created art that is both unsettling and hypnotic, repulsive and irresistible, earning him a reputation as a "master of the grotesque." Eschewing the abstraction preferred in the mid-century, Bacon instead developed a quasi-realist style that rendered the human figure as warped and anguished. Laura Scalabrella Spada completed her PhD at University College London in the Department of History of Art in 2020. Her research focuses on early modern European art, with a particular emphasis on the body and its processes, boundaries and relations. She has published papers on the politics of corporeality and animation in early modern prints and currently works as an independent researcher.

Phaidon Architecture, Not Architecture A1071770486
The first comprehensive monograph on the cross-disciplinary practice including over 100 built and ephemeral works Since its founding in 1981, New York-based studio Diller Scofidio + Renfro (DS+R) has designed some of the world’s most revered civic spaces and cultural institutions. Their practice covers architecture, urban design, installation art, performance, digital media, and print. From the renowned High Line in New York City to the upcoming V&A East Storehouse in London to some of their earliest projects like the Blur building designed for the 2002 Swiss Expo, DS+R explores alternative strategies in space-making that engage and surprise on a global scale. Designed by DS+R as a pair of structurally conjoined volumes, this monograph invites readers to bridge different modes of production and reconsider the limits of architecture. The unique binding allows each volume to be read individually or in parallel by unfolding the book at the spine. Special crossover layouts link the two volumes with shared obsessions. The monograph features layouts by design consultancy 2x4, with photography by Iwan Baan and Matthew Monteith amongst other photographers. It also includes new dialogues with visionaries from other creative fields, including artist Edmund de Waal, art critic and curator Hans Ulrich Obrist, curator Paola Antonelli, actor Alan Cumming, and choreographer William Forsythe.
