HarperCollins US The House of Yan A1054700257
HarperCollins US The House of Yan A1054700257
Through the sweeping cultural and historical transformations of China, entrepreneur Lan Yan traces her family's history through early 20th Century to present day. The history of the Yan family is inseparable from the history of China over the last century. One of the most influential businesswomen of China today, Lan Yan grew up in the company of the country's powerful elite, including Zhou Enlai, Deng Xiaoping, and other top leaders. Her grandfather, Yan Baohang, originally a nationalist and close to Chiang Kai-shek and his wife, Soong May-ling, later joined the communists and worked as a secret agent for Zhou Enlai during World War II. Lan's parents were diplomats, and her father, Yan Mingfu, was Mao's personal Russian translator. Inspite of their elevated status, the Yan's family life was turned upside down by the Cultural Revolution. One night in 1967, in front of a terrified ten-year-old Lan, Red Guards burst into the family home and arrested her grandfather. Days later, her father was arrested, accused of spying for the Soviet Union. Her mother, Wu Keliang, was branded a counter-revolutionary and forced to go with her daughter to a re-education camp for more than seven years, where Lan came of age as a high school student. In recounting her family history, Lan Yan brings to life a century of Chinese history from the last emperor to present day, including the Cultural Revolution which tore her childhood apart. The little girl who was crushed by the Cultural Revolution has become one of the most active businesswomen in her country. In telling her and her family's story, she serves up an intimate account of the history of contemporary China. This powerful memoir uncovers a century of Chinese political history through one family’s incredible story: A Secret History: Discover the story of Yan Baohang, a nationalist who became a secret agent for communist leader Zhou Enlai during World War II. Inside the Corridors of Power: Get a firsthand account of life among China's elite, from Mao's personal translator to diplomats who knew Chiang Kai-shek and Deng Xiaoping. A Family Torn Apart: Witness the night of the Cultural Revolution when a ten-year-old Lan saw her grandfather arrested by Red Guards, an event that shattered her family and sent her and her mother to a re-education camp. From Ruin to Resilience: Follow Lan Yan's journey from a childhood torn apart by political turmoil to her rise as one of China's most influential and successful businesswomen.

Bloomsbury Academic Shots in the Dark A1071300037
Bloomsbury Academic Shots in the Dark A1071300037
Bloomsbury presents Shots in the Dark by David Kynaston, read by Mark Meadows. I loved every page, and ended up admiring David Kynaston, our greatest social historian, even more than I already did' Nick Hornby Brimming with wisdom and humour, David Kynaston's diaries written over one football season offer up his most personal take on social history to date. David Kynaston was seven and a half years old when he attended his first Aldershot match in the early months of 1959. So began a deep attachment to the game and a lifelong loyalty to an obscure, small-town football club. Though as he sits down to write his diaries almost sixty years on, he reflects that life might have been simpler if his father had never taken him to that first match at the Rec… Shots in the Dark is the diary David Kynaston kept in the football season of 2016/17, detailing the ups and downs of the 'Shots' in the year that saw a divisive referendum in the UK and the impending ascension of Donald Trump. Here Kynaston presents a social history of modern Britain with a difference – all through the prism of the beautiful game. A testament to the ways in which fandom gives solidity and security to our lives, particularly in these bewildering and rapidly changing times, Shots in the Dark gets to the heart of what it means to be a devoted follower of a sports team. This is a diary of the macro and the micro, as questions of loyalty, of identity, of liberalism and of nationalism all rub uncomfortably up against each other during nine charged months. ____________________ 'A master socioeconomic craftsman' Guardian '[A] delightful book … This is a book about football but, like all the best books, it is about a thousand other things as well … This thrilling, intimate, sometimes poignant, often wonderfully funny book shows the workings in real time of a deeply civilised, humane and tolerant mind in an age when those virtues are in short supply. Here is a man with whom you would want to go to a match, and even share a beer afterwards. David Kynaston is one of the good guys, and this is one of the very good books' Daily Mail 'A charming diary ... He's the sort of fan I want to sit next to: partisan yet civil, eyes on the match but aware there are bigger things to worry about' Financial Times

GRIN Les Misérables - Volume I - Fantine A1007093358
GRIN Les Misérables - Volume I - Fantine A1007093358
Classic from the year 2009 in the subject Romance Languages - French Literature, , language: English, abstract: BOOK F SECOND. THE FALL*** CHAPTER I. THE EVENING OF A DAY OF WALKING*** Early in the month of October, 1815, about an hour before sunset, a man who was travelling on foot entered the little town of D---- The few inhabitants who were at their windows or on their thresholds at the moment stared at this traveller with a sort of uneasiness. It was difficult to encounter a wayfarer of more wretched appearance. He was a man of medium stature, thickset and robust, in the prime of life. He might have been forty-six or forty-eight years old. A cap with a drooping leather visor partly concealed his face, burned and tanned by sun and wind, and dripping with perspiration. His shirt of coarse yellow linen, fastened at the neck by a small silver anchor, permitted a view of his hairy breast: he had a cravat twisted into a string; trousers of blue drilling, worn and threadbare, white on one knee and torn on the other; an old gray, tattered blouse, patched on one of the elbows with a bit of green cloth sewed on with twine; a tightly packed soldier knapsack, well buckled and perfectly new, on his back; an enormous, knotty stick in his hand; iron-shod shoes on his stockingless feet; a shaved head and a long beard. The sweat, the heat, the journey on foot, the dust, added I know not what sordid quality to this dilapidated whole. His hair was closely cut, yet bristling, for it had begun to grow a little, and did not seem to have been cut for some time. No one knew him. He was evidently only a chance passer-by. Whence came he? From the south; from the seashore, perhaps, for he made his entrance into D---- by the same street which, seven months previously, had witnessed the passage of the Emperor Napoleon on his way from Cannes to Paris. This man must have been walking all day. He seemed very much fatigued. Some women of the ancient market town which is situated below the city had seen him pause beneath the trees of the boulevard Gassendi, and drink at the fountain which stands at the end of the promenade. He must have been very thirsty: for the children who followed him saw him stop again for a drink, two hundred paces further on, at the fountain in the market-place.[...]

Parkstone International Vincent van Gogh A1080170801
Parkstone International Vincent van Gogh A1080170801
Vincent van Gogh's life and work are so intertwined that it is hardly possible to observe one without thinking of the other. Van Gogh has indeed become the incarnation of the suffering, misunderstood martyr of modern art, the emblem of the artist as an outsider. An article, published in 1890, gave details about van Gogh's illness. The author of the article saw the painter as "a terrible and demented genius, often sublime, sometimes grotesque, always at the brink of the pathological." Very little is known about Vincent's childhood. At the age of eleven he had to leave "the human nest", as he called it himself, for various boarding schools. The first portrait shows us van Gogh as an earnest nineteen year old. At that time he had already been at work for three years in The Hague and, later, in London in the gallery Goupil & Co. In 1874 his love for Ursula Loyer ended in disaster and a year later he was transferred to Paris, against his will. After a particularly heated argument during Christmas holidays in 1881, his father, a pastor, ordered Vincent to leave. With this final break, he abandoned his family name and signed his canvases simply "Vincent". He left for Paris and never returned to Holland. In Paris he came to know Paul Gauguin, whose paintings he greatly admired. The self-portrait was the main subject of Vincent's work from 1886c88. In February 1888 Vincent left Paris for Arles and tried to persuade Gauguin to join him. The months of waiting for Gauguin were the most productive time in van Gogh's life. He wanted to show his friend as many pictures as possible and decorate the Yellow House. But Gauguin did not share his views on art and finally returned to Paris. On 7 January, 1889, fourteen days after his famous self-mutilation, Vincent left the hospital where he was convalescing. Although he hoped to recover from and to forget his madness, but he actually came back twice more in the same year. During his last stay in hospital, Vincent painted landscapes in which he recreated the world of his childhood. It is said that Vincent van Gogh shot himself in the side in a field but decided to return to the inn and went to bed. The landlord informed Dr Gachet and his brother Theo, who described the last moments of his life which ended on 29 July, 1890: "I wanted to die. While I was sitting next to him promising that we would try to heal him. [...], he answered, 'La tristesse durera toujours (The sadness will last forever).'"

Osprey Publishers F-104 Starfighter Units in Combat A1028779303
The 'missile with a man in it' was known for its blistering speed and deadliness in air combat. The F-104C flew more than 14,000 combat hours in Vietnam as a bomber escort, a Wild Weasel escort and a close air support aircraft. Though many were sceptical of its ability to carry weapons, the Starfighter gave a fine account of itself in the close air support role. It was also well known that the enemy were especially reluctant to risk their valuable and scarce MiGs when the F-104 was escorting bombers over North Vietnam or flying combat air patrols nearby. The missions were not without risk, and 14 Starfighters were lost during the war over a two-year period. This was not insignificant considering that the USAF only had one wing of these valuable aircraft at the time, and wartime attrition and training accidents also took quite a bite from the inventory. While the F-105 Thunderchief and F-4 Phantom got most of the glory and publicity during the war in Vietnam, the Lockheed F-104 Starfighter was not given much chance of surviving in a 'shooting war'. In the event, it did that and much more. Although built in small numbers for the USAF, the F-104C fought and survived for almost three years in Vietnam. Like its predecessor the F-100, the Starfighter was a mainstay of Tactical Air Command and Air Defence Command, with whom it served with distinction as an air superiority fighter and point defence interceptor. This small, tough and very fast fighter, dubbed 'The Missile with a Man in It', was called upon to do things it was not specifically designed for, and did them admirably. Among these were close air support and armed reconnaissance using bombs, rockets and other armaments hung from its tiny wings, as well as its 20 mm Vulcan cannon, firing 6000 rounds per minute. The jet participated in some of the most famous battles of the war, including the legendary Operation Bolo, in which seven North Vietnamese MiGs went down in flames with no US losses. Even as it was fighting in Vietnam, the Starfighter was being adopted by no fewer than six NATO air forces as well as Japan and Nationalist China. It was later procured by Jordan, Turkey and Pakistan. The latter nation took the Starfighter to war with India twice in the 1960s, and it also saw combat with Taiwan. The story of the Starfighter in Vietnam is one of tragedy and of ultimate vindication. For decades the F-104's contribution to the air war in Vietnam was downplayed and its role as a ground attack machine minimised. Only in recent years has that assessment been re-evaluated, and the facts prove the Starfighter to have been able to do its job as well or better than some of the other tactical aircraft sent to the theatre for just that purpose.

Whitestone Media Isaiah A1035474331
Whitestone Media Isaiah A1035474331
The Book of Isaiah is a cornerstone of the Hebrew Bible and the Christian Old Testament, comprising 66 chapters that blend prophecy, poetry, and narrative to deliver a powerful message of judgment, consolation, and hope. Traditionally attributed to the prophet Isaiah, his ministry spanned the 8th century BCE in the Kingdom of Judah, during a tumultuous period that saw the rise and fall of neighboring empires and the eventual exile of the Jewish people. **Structure and Themes of Isaiah:** The book is commonly divided into two or three major sections, each reflecting different historical contexts and theological emphases: 1. **Chapters 1-39 (First Isaiah or Proto-Isaiah):** This section is attributed to Isaiah of Jerusalem and focuses on the imminent threat of Assyrian invasion. It combines oracles of judgment against Judah and Jerusalem for their social injustices and idolatry with messages of hope and divine promise for the future. Notable passages include the vision of the holy God in the Temple (chapter 6), the Immanuel prophecy (chapter 7), and the vision of universal peace from the "shoot from the stump of Jesse" (chapter 11). 2. **Chapters 40-55 (Second Isaiah or Deutero-Isaiah):** Often dated to the end of the Babylonian exile (late 6th century BCE), this section offers words of comfort and hope to the exiled Jewish community. It speaks of a new exodus led by God, who will redeem His people and return them to Jerusalem. Central to this section are the Servant Songs, which describe a mysterious "Servant of the Lord" who will suffer for the sins of the people yet bring about their redemption. 3. **Chapters 56-66 (Third Isaiah or Trito-Isaiah):** This final section addresses the challenges of the post-exilic community in Jerusalem, encouraging them to remain faithful to God's laws and envisioning a future where all nations will join Israel in worshiping the one true God. It emphasizes themes of justice, Sabbath observance, and the inclusion of foreigners and eunuchs into God's covenant. **Key Themes:** - **The Holiness of God:** Isaiah emphasizes the transcendence and holiness of God, calling people to repentance and purity of worship. - **Judgment and Hope:** The book oscillates between stark judgments against sin and glorious visions of a future redeemed world under God's righteous rule. - **The Servant of the Lord:** Isaiah introduces the figure of God's Servant, whose mission is central to God's plan of salvation. This figure has been interpreted in various ways, including as a collective representation of Israel and as a messianic figure fulfilled in Jesus Christ. - **Universal Salvation:** Isaiah envisions a future where not only Israel but all nations will come to recognize the sovereignty of the Lord and participate in His worship. The Book of Isaiah has had a profound influence on Jewish and Christian thought, providing a theological foundation for concepts of messianic hope, the nature of divine judgment and redemption, and the universal scope of God's salvation plan. Its rich imagery, poetic language, and complex interweaving of judgment and grace continue to inspire readers and shape religious imagination.

" Sex Is a Funny Word is nothing short of revolutionary. Cory Silverberg and Fiona Smyth’s newest book is brilliant in its approach to giving caregivers and educators the tools they need to talk to kids about their bodies.... Though representation of many bodies shouldn’t be revolutionary, most of our media – children’s books included – showcases white, thin bodies in ways that are often ableist, sexist, homophobic, and trans-exclusive. In this way (and many others), Silverberg and Smyth’s contribution to the dialogue is revolutionary: finally young people have a way to see all bodies (including their own body) represented. Yes." —Kristin Russo, Buzzfeed "Exciting, enlightening, and innovative, this book addresses timeless questions about sex for a new generation of kids who are increasingly aware of the broad spectrum of gender and sexual identities." —Clara Hendricks , School Library Journal, starred review "Done with great sensitivity, precision and poise ... having access to a book like this could change the life of a lot of kids." —Feministing "Silverberg is posing big questions at a crucial time ...[Books like his] represent shifting ideas and the inevitable parent-kid conversations around them." —Maclean's “Emphasizing the importance of trust, respect, justice, and joy – as well as open communication – it’s a thoughtful and affirming exploration of relationships, gender identity, and growing sexual awareness.” —Publishers Weekly, starred review "With skin tones in unlikely shades (blue! purple! green!) and wildly diverse crowd scenes, chances are good that any reader can identify with someone in these pages. Refreshingly, these crowds are diverse in a way that does not appear assembled by checklist. Lively design, bright, clashing colors, cartoon-style illustrations, comic strips, and plenty of humor support the informal, inclusive approach ... This carefully thought-out explanation may surprise but should be widely appreciated." —Kirkus Reviews "You could send your kid to college and graduate school, and years of therapy, to learn how to lovingly come to terms with their gender and sexuality. Or you could simply read this book with them—it's that thorough, and that good." —Kate Bornstein , author of My New Gender Workbook “Sex Is a Funny Word is a book that brilliantly reminds us of our shared humanity. Whether you are LGBTQIA or any other letter in the alphabet (including 'U' for undecided), this book contains everything you ever wanted the kids in your life to know about sex. “ —James Lecesne , co-founder, The Trevor Project "I read Sex Is a Funny Word with my 10 year old daughter who immediately got it! She saw herself, family, and friends in the characters. It's an amazing resource and makes what could be a difficult conversation, quite easy. I wish I had this book as a child." —Aiesha Turman , Founder and Executive Director, The Black Girl Project "The book is for the same 7- to 10-year-old demographic as the 'younger girls' targeted by Care & Keeping, but is leaps and bounds ahead in terms of how progressive it is. As I recently thumbed through Sex Is a Funny Word’s brightly colored drawings, I couldn’t help thinking about how much I needed a book like this growing up. . . . In age-appropriate language, it humorously tackles topics from gender to masturbation to crushes, even including sections on how the concepts of justice and trust intersect with sex and bodies. It’s also forthcoming about the fact that preteens are understandably curious about bodies that look different from their own." —Rachelle Hampton, Slate "Yes, it’s written for 7-to-10-year-olds. But I’d like to see it on the required reading list for high school freshmen, college resident advisors, military personnel, early-childhood educators, coaches, clergy, police officers, pediatricians and parents. Did I miss anyone? ... the story begins not with body parts but with values: Respect. Trust. Joy. Justice. 'Justice is like fairness, only bigger,' Si

When dehumanisation and destruction become the norm, the cycle must be broken. Longlisted for the 2025 Walkley Award Finalist in the 75th US National Jewish Book Awards For over twenty years, Ittay Flescher has worked as an educator, journalist and peacebuilder in Melbourne and Jerusalem. When he woke up on the morning of October 7, 2023 to the sounds of rocket sirens over Jerusalem and later saw the devastation of Gaza in response, the grief and sadness that engulfed him - and so many others - compelled him to ask: how can we find a way forward? Following years spent facilitating dialogue between Jews, Muslims and Christians, Ittay believes that peace can only be found if we are willing to empathise with the pain of others. The Holy and the Broken challenges Palestinian and Israeli leaders, citizens and their supporters across the world to imagine a different reality; to look at history with a different eye; and to search for moments of engagement rather than resentment in the narratives of the past that each side tells about itself. Ultimately, this is a story that aims to comfort the troubled and trouble the comfortable. Praise: 'Courageous and considered. Ittay nurtures the tender, fragile shoots of peace. McKlein Publishing Grand Prix 1961-1965
------------------------------------------------------------- Awarded the Honorary Award in the Motorsport Category at the Motorworld Buchpreis 2021 From January 1st, 1961, a new set of technical regulations were applied in Formula One. From that date, all the naturally aspirated engines had to be of a maximum displacement of 1.5 litres in an attempt to reduce the speeds. The power of these engines was initially about 150 bhp though, at the end of the era, this had risen to more than 220 bhp. At first the Formula One cars of that time were underestimated, which was being unfair to the achievements of the engineers and of the drivers involved. To operate these cars at their limits demanded a high level of driver skill. Initially the British teams had opposed the new rules and thus entered the new Formula One at a technical disadvantage. Ferrari was better equipped with new 1.5 litre engines and thus the Scuderia won both the Driver and the Constructor Championships in 1961 and was able to repeat this success in 1964. Lotus was just as successful with the outstanding Jim Clark, and BRM driver Graham Hill also won the title. After the British had caught up with engines like the Climax V8, Lotus also pointed the way into the future with the Type 25, the first monocoque Formula One car. The 1.5 litre formula saw the participation of some of the best Formula One drivers of all time with Stirling Moss, Graham Hill, John Surtees, Dan Gurney, Jim Clark and Jackie Stewart. And despite all the prophecies of doom that the "new" Formula One would not be exciting thanks to a lack of engine power, some thrilling sport was on offer during this five-year period. These Grands Prix were also a real spectacle for the spectators, because they were very close to the action. Jörg-Thomas Födisch, Rainer Rossbach and Nils Ruwisch reveal in this book – using many previously unpublished photographs of which most are taken from the Bernard Cahier archive – the attraction and excitement generated by the forty-seven Grands Prix that constituted the World Championships for Drivers under the 1.5-litr
