Alison Larkin Presents The Civil War: In Their Own Words A1077184203
Alison Larkin Presents The Civil War: In Their Own Words A1077184203
In this star-studded audiobook commissioned specially for audio, Abraham Lincoln and Harriet Beecher Stowe's narration is woven together with powerfully acted scenes from Uncle Tom's Cabin, the speeches and writing of Lincoln, Emerson, and others, bringing the Civil War to dazzling, authentic new life. Riveting dialogue, personal letters and the infamous Lincoln-Douglas debates reverberate with powerful relevance today. "America has never been so divided-except during the Civil War. I kept thinking, 'What if we could produce an audiobook that gives voice to the great leaders of that time period? Could the words of those great leaders help us now?'" shared executive producer Alison Larkin. Adapted, written and directed by Audie award-winning director Anna Lyse Erikson, this brilliantly performed audio experience stars Golden Voice narrator Scott Brick (Grammy-nominated and Earphones Award winning) as Abraham Lincoln, Moira Quirk (Emmy Award Winning) as Harriet Beecher Stowe, Matthew Wolf (Game of Thrones, The Royals, Scandal) as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Rif Hutton (General Hospital, NCIS) as Uncle Tom and others, P J Ochlan (Award-winning Broadway actor) as Stephen A. Douglas and others, Karen Malina White (Emmy-nominated actress) as Eliza Harris, Michel Crouch (Golden Voice narrator) as Younger Clarence and introducing writer and actor Nick Nerangis (The Wire, West Wing) as Older Clarence and the author of the play A Life of Honor.

University Presses Reconstructing Ancient Linen Body Armor A1028585088
University Presses Reconstructing Ancient Linen Body Armor A1028585088
Alexander the Great led one of the most successful armies in history and conquered nearly the entirety of the known world while wearing armor made of cloth. How is that possible? In Reconstructing Ancient Linen Body Armor, Gregory S. Aldrete, Scott Bartell, and Alicia Aldrete provide the answer. An extensive multiyear project in experimental archaeology, this pioneering study presents a thorough investigation of the linothorax, linen armor worn by the Greeks, Macedonians, and other ancient Mediterranean warriors. Because the linothorax was made of cloth, no examples of it have survived. As a result, even though there are dozens of references to the linothorax in ancient literature and nearly a thousand images of it in ancient art, this linen armor remains relatively ignored and misunderstood by scholars. Combining traditional textual and archaeological analysis with hands-on reconstruction and experimentation, the authors unravel the mysteries surrounding the linothorax. They have collected and examined all of the literary, visual, historical, and archaeological evidence for the armor and detail their efforts to replicate the armor using materials and techniques that are as close as possible to those employed in antiquity. By reconstructing actual examples using authentic materials, the authors were able to scientifically assess the true qualities of linen armor for the first time in 1,500 years. The tests reveal that the linothorax provided surprisingly effective protection for ancient warriors, that it had several advantages over bronze armor, and that it even shared qualities with modern-day Kevlar. Previously featured in documentaries on the Discovery Channel and the Canadian History Channel, as well as in U.S. News and World Report, MSNBC Online, and other international venues, this groundbreaking work will be a landmark in the study of ancient warfare.

'Burgis shows you how to be authentically yourself' - Kim Scott, bestselling author of Radical Candor 'The One and the Ninety-Nine offers a compelling exploration of how to develop a healthier sense of self in an age of social contagion and fragmented identities. A timely and much-needed book.' -Anne-Laure Le Cunff, neuroscientist and author of Tiny Experiments. It's not hard to find your tribe. The real challenge today is not losing yourself within one. We are living in an era of crisis where becoming a whole person means navigating constant external pressure. Through compelling and original insights, author Luke Burgis dives into philosophy, psychology and personal experience, offering a clear guide for engaging with chaotic modern society both in our personal and working lives. Baker Publishing Group Exploring Catholic Theology A1034712822
"Father Barron's bracing, stimulating essays remind us that the 'Church in permanent mission' to which Pope Francis has called Catholics must be thoughtful as well as merciful, culture-challenging as well as culture-forming, intellectually sharp as well as pastorally sensitive." -- George Weigel , author of Evangelical Catholicism: Deep Reform in the 21st-Century Church "These essays remind us how indispensable Fr. Barron is as a spokesman for the integrity and beauty of the Christian faith. He combines theological learning and depth with a remarkable gift for knowing what needs to be said--and how to say it." -- R. R. Reno , editor, First Things "Father Barron is a man of faith whose thirst for God has engendered an authentic intellectual quest. This book is the rarest of achievements, namely a demonstration in one short volume of how the doctrine of God, Christology, the Church, ethics, liturgy, and history go together in lived experience." -- Matthew Levering , Mundelein Seminary "Today the Western Church has to proclaim the gospel in a culture that says it has outgrown religion, Christianity in particular. In this new and perilous situation, we have no more honest and reliable guide than Fr. Barron. He shows us how to remember and teach the truths about God and ourselves that our culture once knew but is now trying to forget--and trying to tempt the Church also to forget." -- Bruce D. Marshall , Perkins School of Theology, Southern Methodist University "An exceptionally readable introduction to modern theology. Exploring Catholic Theology could be read for pleasure and for profit by undergraduate students, professors, pastors, and lay parish leaders. Barron is recreating apologetics at a more imaginative and challenging level. Everyone who meditates on this book will discover something new about how to witness to the truth of Christianity in a postmodern culture." -- Francesca Murphy , University of Notre Dame "In this book, Fr. Barron models the kind of pastoral theology and ressourcement envisioned by Vatican II. His is a theology founded on Scripture, tradition, and liturgy--but with windows open onto the world, engaging pop culture and high culture, politics and poetics, evangelicals and postmoderns, the new atheism and the old. Highly recommended, especially for pastors, scholars, teachers, and seminarians." -- Scott Hahn , Franciscan University of Steubenville; St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology

8 starred reviews · Goodreads Choice Awards Best of the Best · William C. Morris Award Winner · National Book Award Longlist · Printz Honor Book · Coretta Scott King Honor Book · #1 New York Times Bestseller! "Absolutely riveting!" -Jason Reynolds "Stunning." -John Green "This story is necessary. This story is important." -Kirkus (starred review) "Heartbreakingly topical." -Publishers Weekly (starred review) "A marvel of verisimilitude." -Booklist (starred review) "A powerful, in-your-face novel." -Horn Book (starred review) Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed. Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil's name. Some cops and the local drug lord try to intimidate Starr and her family. What everyone wants to know is: what really went down that night? And the only person alive who can answer that is Starr. But what Starr does-or does not-say could upend her community. It could also endanger her life. Want more of Garden Heights? Catch Maverick and Seven's story in Concrete Rose, Angie Thomas's powerful prequel to The Hate U Give. Inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement, this story about one girl's struggle for justice is more timely and important than ever. But in a world determined to silence her, what will speaking out cost? A Powerful Coming-of-Age Story: Starr Carter must learn to bridge her two worlds—the poor, black neighborhood she calls home and the wealthy, predominantly white prep school she attends. Inspired by Black Lives Matter: An unflinching and unforgettable look at police brutality after Starr becomes the sole witness to the fatal shooting of her childhood friend, Khalil. A Reluctant Activist: Facing pressure from her community and intimidation from law enforcement, Starr must decide whether speaking her truth is worth the risk to her and her family. An Authentic & Unforgettable Voice: Hailed as a modern classic, this award-winning novel is told with raw honesty, humor, and heart, making it a must-read for teens and adults alike.
