Serpent Books An Historico-geographical Description of the North and Eastern Parts of Europe and Asia A1074612985
Full title of the work: An historico-geographical description of the north and eastern parts of Europe and Asia but more particularly of Russia, Siberia, and Great Tartary both in their ancient and modern state, together with an entire new polyglot-table of the dialects of 32 Tartarian nations and a vocabulary of the Kalmuck-Mungalian tongue (Serpent Books Edition). This work was originally written in High German by Philipp Johann von Strahlenberg (also known as Philip Johan and Philip John) and published in Stockholm in 1730. It was translated and published in English in 1738 (translator unknown). The present work is the English translation. Philipp Johann von Strahlenberg (1676-1747) was a Swedish officer who was captured by the Russians after the fateful defeat of the Swedish Army at Poltava in 1709. During his captivity, he was sent to Siberia where he eventually began working as a cartographer, geographer and explorer of Siberia and the Far East. In this work, Strahlenberg's opus magnum, he describes the customs, traditions, and languages of the many peoples then inhabiting Russia's little-known vast hinterland. As a well-read scholar, Strahlenberg also makes many comparisons with the classics of European history (including Greek, Latin and Norse sources). The final result is a remarkable book that can almost be viewed as a prototype for the sciences of linguistics, ethnography, and anthropology which would only emerge a century later. This is a replica of the original (1738) with a new preface by anthropologist Nikolas Århem. The main text is the original English from 1738 but is fully readable today. No folded maps are included in this book. All maps and images from the original are included and the large format (210 mm x 273 mm [8,25x10,75 in]) does them full justice. Larger maps and images have been split into multiple pages allowing them to be appreciated just as in the original.

Summer in Siberia? What does that feel like? Is Siberia perhaps a new travel destination we didn’t know about? How is climate change making itself felt there? In several books of photographs Olaf Otto Becker has already documented the alterations in landscape caused by climate change, as well as the influence of human behavior on nature. He became world-famous for his pictures of icebergs, whose beauty is captivating, even in the face of their melting. Now, the photographer has turned to the permafrost zone and its gradual retreat northward. He captures the inhospitable formes of earth and ice that tower above wet beaches, looking like abstract sculptures; follows a group of researchers who were taking soil samples during the “warm summer” of 2019; and finally lands in the semi-decaying harbor town of Tiksi, where children also play. An unusual, new Becker! OLAF OTTO BECKER (*1959, Travemünde, Germany) studied communications design in Augsburg, as well as philosophy and political science in Munich. His photographs can be found in exhibits and important collections worldwide. His books with Hatje Cantz include Broken Line (2017), Ilulissat (2017), Reading the Landscape (2014), Under the Nordic Light (2011), and Above Zero (2009).
Experiment The Secret World of Denisovans A1077157825
In December 2010, scientists discovered a fragment of a finger bone in the remote, Denisova Cave in Siberia. To their surprise, the bone contained neither Homo sapiens nor Neanderthal DNA. Rather, the fast-advancing science of paleogenetics revealed that the DNA came from a previously unknown species of hominids-the Denisovans-who shared a common ancestor with both Neanderthals and Homo sapiens. This and subsequent Denisovan fossil discoveries required paleoanthropologists, including Silvana Condemi, to reconsider their understanding of our ancestors and their successive prehistoric migrations out of Africa and into and throughout Eurasia tens of thousands of years ago. Leading us through the excavation of Denisova Cave, the sequencing of the Denisovan genome and recent fossil research, Condemi and her co-author, François Savatier, explore how the Denisovans migrated throughout Asia and with whom they interacted along the way, as well as the comparisons and divergences between the evolutionary processes of Denisovans and our other ancestor cousins, Neanderthals. They help us to understand and appreciate how today's inhabitants of East Asia-from Siberia to the Philippines-carry up to 5 percent of Denisovan DNA, and they revise the epic story of our ancient human ancestors' journeys as they peopled our planet.

He was known simply as the Blind Traveler. A solitary, sightless adventurer, James Holman (1786-1857) fought the slave trade in Africa, survived a frozen captivity in Siberia, hunted rogue elephants in Ceylon, helped chart the Australian outback—and; astonishingly, circumnavigated the globe, becoming one of the greatest wonders of the world he so sagaciously explored. A Sense of the World is a spellbinding and moving rediscovery of one of history's most epic lives—a story to awaken our own senses of awe and wonder.

The papers deal with a range of questions raised for linguistic theory and description by polysynthetic languages. Prototypical polysynthetic lamguages, found among unrelated language families in such varied parts of the world as North America, Meso-America, Siberia, northern Australia, and Papua New Guinea, display remarkably similar suites of grammatical characteristics. But, nearly two centuries after Humboldt and Kleinschmidt began to make the existence and interest of polysythetic languages widely known among linguistics, languages of this type continue to pose a challange to every major linguistic theory.
Michael Strogoff is the 14th novel in Jules Verne's Extraordinary Voyages cycle, his largest and most influential body of published work. It was written specially for Czar Alexander II of Russia's visit to Paris in 1876, and tells the story of a young courier's perilous journey across Russia to Eastern Siberia in order to warn the Czar's brother of an impending Tartar invasion. Like all of Verne's work, this captivating adventure novel was meticulously researched, as is evident in the close attention to detail in the descriptions of Russian and Siberian geography.
