THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER '[A] clever, lively ... splendid new book' DAN JONES, SUNDAY TIMES 'A big gold bar of delight' SPECTATOR Sixteen hundred years ago Britain left the Roman Empire and swiftly fell into ruin. Into this violent and unstable world came foreign invaders from across the sea, and established themselves as its new masters. In this sweeping and original history, renowned historian Marc Morris separates the truth from the legend and tells the extraordinary story of how the foundations of England were laid. Beautifully written, incredibly accessible and deeply researched' JAMES O'BRIEN 'A much-needed book ... Gilbert Keith Chesterton KC*SG (29 May 1874 – 14 June 1936) was an English writer, philosopher, lay theologian, and literary and art critic. He has been referred to as the "prince of paradox". Time magazine observed of his writing style: "Whenever possible Chesterton made his points with popular sayings, proverbs, allegories—first carefully turning them inside out." Chesterton created the fictional priest-detective Father Brown, and wrote on apologetics. Even some of those who disagree with him have recognised the wide appeal of such works as Orthodoxy and The Everlasting Man. Chesterton routinely referred to himself as an "orthodox" Christian, and came to identify this position more and more with Catholicism, eventually converting to Catholicism from High Church Anglicanism. George Bernard Shaw, his "friendly enemy", said of him, "He was a man of colossal genius." Biographers have identified him as a successor to such Victorian authors as Matthew Arnold, Thomas Carlyle, Cardinal John Henry Newman, and John Ruskin. (wikipedia.org)

'An enthrallingly intricate novel . . . impressive' GUARDIAN 'There's something of F. Scott Fitzgerald about the way Cahill writes about the very rich' DAILY MAIL 'A biting satire of the art world's glamour, pomp and greed . . . lucid and evocative' DAILY TELEGRAPH 'I really loved The Violet Hour . . . On one level it functions as a highbrow whodunnit, and grippingly so, but it's much more than that, building into a meditation on mortality and the unreliable consolations of art, love and materialism' PATRICK GALE, author of Mother's Boy 'A thrilling story told in seductive, shimmering prose. Beauty, money, power, seduction, betrayal. It's all here in this bewitching and all too often troubling backstage pass to the commercial art world' CHLOË ASHBY, author of Wet Paint 'I'm overwhelmed by the beauty of James Cahill's writing and storytelling' SANTANU BHATTACHARYA, author of Deviants 'Artists are slaves to their vanity. But in the end, in time, they see things as they really are.' Thomas Haller has achieved the kind of fame that most artists only dream of: shows in London and New York, paintings sold for a fortune. The vision he presents to the world is one of an untouchable genius at the top of his game. It is also a lie. Who is the real Thomas Haller? His oldest friend and former dealer, Lorna, might once have known - before Thomas traded their early intimacy for international fame. Between his ruthless new dealer and a property mogul obsessed with his work, the appetite for Thomas and his art is all-consuming. On the eve of his latest show, the luminaries of the art world gather. But the sudden death of a young man has put everyone on edge, and a chain of events begins that will lead the friends back into the past, to confront who they have become. A story of deception, power play and longing, The Violet Hour exposes the unsettling underbelly of the art world, asking: who is granted admission to a world that only seems to glitter and who is left outside, their faces pressed to the glass? PRAISE FOR TIEPOLO BLUE 'The best novel I have read for ages . . . masterly' STEPHEN FRY 'An exhilarating, erudite read' VOGUE.COM 'Electric' GUARDIAN 'Startlingly impressive' DAILY MAIL
Wordsworth Editions Ltd The Karamazov Brothers A1009000757
Translated by Constance Garnett, with an Introduction by A. D. P. Briggs. As Fyodor Karamazov awaits an amorous encounter, he is violently done to death. The three sons of the old debauchee are forced to confront their own guilt or complicity. Who will own to parricide? The reckless and passionate Dmitri? The corrosive intellectual Ivan? Surely not the chaste novice monk Alyosha? The search reveals the divisions which rack the brothers, yet paradoxically unite them. Around the writhings of this one dysfunctional family Dostoevsky weaves a dense network of social, psychological and philosophical relationships. At the same time he shows - from the opening 'scandal' scene in the monastery to a personal appearance by an eccentric Devil - that his dramatic skills have lost nothing of their edge. The Karamazov Brothers, completed a few months before Dostoevsky's death in 1881, remains for many the high point of his genius as novelist and chronicler of the modern malaise. It cast a long shadow over D. H. Lawrence, Thomas Mann, Albert Camus, and other giants of twentieth-century European literature.
History is written by the victors. But that is no comfort to those crossed out by the editor's pen. For years, science textbooks equated electricity and light with one man, Thomas Edison, while the genius whose pioneering electrical technologies truly power the modern world languished as a minor note in scientific history. Before the turn of the 20th century, electricity remained a mere scientific curiosity. Nikola Tesla, arguably more than anyone else, changed that. But Nikola's pioneering research in electricity represents only a portion of the scientific and technical innovations that elevated him to science godhood. Tesla not only expanded and revolutionized the work of his predecessors, he also leapfrogged ahead of his contemporaries to the next step. Nikola Tesla: My Life, My Research has three parts: Tesla's autobiography; Tesla's major research programs explained in simple words; and an eighty-page collection of rare photographs taken at several stages of Tesla's life; from his birth certificate, to the first photograph ever taken by phosphorescent light, to the last known photograph before Tesla's death, in 1943.

Hachette Book Group USA The Complete Poems of Emily Dickinson A1003099487
This comprehensive and authoritative collection of all 1,775 poems by Emily Dickinson is an essential volume for all lovers of American literature. Only eleven of Emily Dickinson's poems were published prior to her death in 1886; the startling originality of her work doomed it to obscurity in her lifetime. Early posthumous published collections -- some of them featuring liberally "edited" versions of the poems -- did not fully and accurately represent Dickinson's bold experiments in prosody, her tragic vision, and the range of her intellectual and emotional explorations. Not until the 1955 publication of The Complete Poems of Emily Dickinson, a three-volume critical edition compiled by Thomas H. Johnson, were readers able for the first time to assess, understand, and appreciate the whole of Dickinson's extraordinary poetic genius. This book, a distillation of the three-volume Complete Poems, brings together the original texts of all 1,775 poems that Emily Dickinson wrote. "With its chronological arrangement of the poems, this volume becomes more than just a collection; it is at the same time a poetic biography of the thoughts and feelings of a woman whose beauty was deep and lasting." --San Francisco Chronicle
He’s running for his life. And he’s running out of time. Jay has been hunted since he was twenty years old. A contract on his life has been traded like a commodity, rising and falling with Bitcoin for decades. On the run once again with no passport and airmiles as his only currency, Jay will have to choose between love and survival, and run for his life. While staying at an all-inclusive resort, surviving off of the points he accrued in a previous, more successful life, Jay meets Ellie, a beguiling fellow runner who may even be faster than he is, and is harboring secrets of her own. When an assassin appears poolside, Jay is on the run again, but this time with Ellie, as they find themselves on a catamaran helmed by a sinister and reckless crew. The Runner is about high-finance, con artists, the Book of Jonah, ultramarathons, and how falling in love can change everything. Darkly funny, sexy, and exciting, Scarlett Thomas—author of the “work of gonzo genius” (The New York Times), The Sleepwalkers—transports readers from the sun-drenched roads of Cyprus to the rain slicked streets of Kent in this high-concept literary thriller.

'There is a wisdom of the head, and… there is a wisdom of the heart.' One of Dickens's shortest novels, and admired by critics such as F. R. Leavis and George Bernard Shaw, Hard Times offers a profound social commentary on nineteenth century England. Set in the fictional industrial city of Coketown – characterised by its ash-strewn factories, polluted environment and soulless spirit – Hard Times centres on the strict, no-nonsense schoolmaster, Thomas Gradgrind, who values fact, rationalism and self-interest above all else. His teachings weigh heavily on his children – Louisa and Tom – who unsuccessfully strive for happiness into their adult years. A condemning critique of the dehumanising effects of industrialisation, championing the importance of imagination and compassion, Hard Times is a pertinent tale which explores significant social questions relevant to this very day. This audiobook edition is expertly read by Paterson Joseph. Charles Dickens (1812 – 1870) was an English writer and social critic. He is regarded by many as the greatest novelist of the Victorian era. His works enjoyed unprecedented popularity during his lifetime and, by the twentieth century, critics and scholars had recognized him as a literary genius. His novels and short stories are widely read, performed and adapted today.
