Herr Sommer in Georgetown/Canada stammt aus Geithain. Nach der Enteignung des Sommerschen Gutes 1945 und - damit im Zusammenhang - dem Tod seiner Eltern ging er im Herbst 1945 zunächst zu Verwandten nach Westdeutschland. Die Auswanderung nach Kanada mit Ehefrau und zwei kleinen Kindern erfolgte 1954. Im Jahre 1990 besuchte John Sommer - erstmalig nach 45 Jahren! - seine Heimatstadt. Seit diesem Jahr entwickelten sich enge Beziehungen zwischen Herrn Sommer und Herrn Senf vom Geithainer Heimatverein e.V., welche sich in einem umfangreichen Briefwechsel widerspiegeln. Die stadtgeschichtlichen Forschungen des Heimatvereins sind durch Herrn Sommer in all den Jahren bis zur Gegenwart außerordentlich unterstützt worden: Geschichte des Sommerhofes (Enteignung und Bodenreform 1945 in Geithain), Aufarbeitung der Biografie des Schulstifters Paul Guenther, und das Auffinden der Enkelin des Schulstifters, Frau Virginia Vanderbilt, im Rahmen umfangreicher Sucharbeiten in den USA, England und der Schweiz. Für seine aufwendige und gewissenhafte Mitarbeit im Geithainer Heimatverein wurde Herrn Sommer die Ehrenmitgliedschaft verliehen. Der anfänglich eher sachlich geprägte Gedankenaustausch wurde im Laufe der Jahre zunehmend persönlicher, nicht zuletzt auch nach gegenseitigen Besuchen der Familien. Gemeinsam unternahmen sie von Georgetown eine Reise nach Dover (New Jersey), der Wirkungsstätte des Schulstifters Paul Guenther.
