SO many bird shooters use the 100-400 zoom lens but seldom if ever use it at anything less than 400mm... That one is less sharp than the ef400 f5.6 usm and less AF fast. While it does have image stabilisation, its only rated at two stops. For birds in flight its usually recommended to keep IS turned off by pro shooters because IS tends to slow down AF. And for birds in flight you need every shred of AF speed available. On the face of it the other canon 400 prime (EF400 DO etc) might look better on paper because it's an F4 lens. But it uses diffractive optics (fresnel lens to us) to save expense and weight and that stops ot from being as sharp as this F5.6 unit.
Some cheaper bodies might struggle to AF adequately with this max aperture, but from recent XXD upwardsyou should be fine. I do
nt have any recent bodies as I still use my old 7D (mk1) and a 5D mk3. Both of these work well with this lens.
In fact all my birding lenses with one exception are primes. That one exception is the IS version of the ef70-200 f4L and its a real beauty. At short ranges you can find yourself needing to zoom back a little on occasion to stop wingtips being clipped at frame edges so this the one zoom I regularly use. Also have an EF200 F2.8L II USM and the IS version of the EF300 F4 USM. All are far better lenses than I am a photographer - but every year Ive improved over previous times.
So to summarise. The lens I'm reviewing here is one I'd recommend to anyone needing longer optics than usual for wildlife but particularly for birds. Go longer than 400, you're looking at virtually mortgage level prices. And if you need (and can afford) F2.8 glass at 400+mm, you'll never read this ebay review of a used lens! Those things might be fantastic in use but you'd need a porter to carry it for you as well as have a banker in the family to assist with loans etc etc...

Superb performing lightweight long telephoto lens
I bought this for long lens photography with my Leica SL2 using the Sigma adapter. As the Leica has in body stabilisation and I use a monopod for most pictures, the absence of an image stabiliser in the lens is not a problem, and keeps the weight down. The results are excellent with sharp contrasty photos. Focus snaps in quickly with auto or manual focus. It is light enough to hand hold and is sharp at maximum aperture.
Would I buy it again? Yes, it was a good decision.
