Test: Einzeltest: GELID Solutions Silent 12 TC and PWM cooling fan
Zitat: The more I think about it, the more I find it hard to come up with reasons why you wouldn´t want cooling fans in your chassis that regular themselves based on system temperature - Everything else in your system does it these days, so do you really want your fans spinning at full tilt even when your system is happily idling away doing very little, and system temperatures at a minimum? For me personally, a little more peace and quiet while my system isn´t working hard is always welcome.
With that in mind, I´m more than a little pleased to get my hands on these system fans from GELID Solutions that aren´t all about pretty LEDs, or going all-out for low noise 100% of the time while also crippling the airflow of those fans in the process (although I do exempt Noctua from that statement for making some absolutely top-notch parts which mix low noise and high air flow masterfully), but instead focus on controlling fan speed via temperature while also working to ensure they aren´t too loud from a design standpoint.
Of course, these aren´t the first temperature controlled fans I´ve ever seen in my life - I´ve used fans with their own temperature diodes before and I´ve never failed to be annoyed when it comes to trying to find the perfect position for those diodes, and even more irritated when it comes to trying to keep them there in a busy system. However, they do have their potential advantages if you´re worried about a particular hotspot within your system, which you can concentrate your cooling efforts upon more efficiently using a fan such as the Silent 12 TC.
However, my real interest from a personal perspective is in the Silent 12 PWM, which to be honest is the first PWM-sporting system fan I´ve ever gotten my hands on. Why we don´t see PWM fans as standard these days I have no idea, but the concept of controlling fan speed based around CPU temperatures makes plenty of sense, so it´s something I´d like to see a lot more of. What´s more, this capability makes the Silent 12 PWM a perfect fan to choose for any of the CPU coolers on the market which feature user-installable 120mm fans, putting them in the same league as coolers that feature PWM speed control natively.
In closing, if you´re after some system fans which are flashy aesthetically, or are in the hunt for absolute silence (or near enough), then GELID´s Silent 12 offerings quite possibly aren´t for you. On the other hand, if efficiency and controlled fan speeds are the name of the game, the Silent 12 TC and, even more so, the Silent 12 PWM, are an excellent choice.
