Test: Einzeltest: HP Veer 4G (AT&T) webOS smartphone
Zitat: The HP Veer 4G is an interesting device, to say the least. It represents HP´s first official effort with a webOS smartphone since the personal computer manufacturer acquired smartphone pioneer Palm just over a year ago. Design-wise, the Veer bucks the trend in smartphones that says bigger is better, as it is one of the smallest smartphones we have ever laid hands on. The Veer retains the familiar Palm design philosophy that was debuted with the original Palm Pre back in 2009. It has the same portrait-slider, river-stone design, with smooth contours and rounded corners. Just now in a considerably smaller package. Despite its diminutive size, the Veer manages to have all of the features one would look for in a modern smartphone: a capacitive touchscreen, full QWERTY keyboard, a snappy processor, and an elegant, capable OS. HP claims that the Veer offers a full smartphone experience without compromise for those that are looking for a smaller device. Does HP´s gamble work? Can the Veer 4G provide a full smartphone experience in a smaller package and become a daily driver?
Unfortunately, the answer is no. While the Veer is a nice little device that might fit a niche section of the market, the majority of users will likely find it too small to be their smartphone of choice. Its a real shame, too, because the Veer offers the best webOS experience to date, and webOS is an elegant, fun-to-use operating system that has some unique traits that the leaders in the market are lacking. Regardless, the small screen and tiny keyboard on the Veer make certain tasks very difficult to accomplish. The camera, which lacks a flash and autofocus, also leaves a bit to be desired and nixes the Veer as a tiny, pocket-sized picture-taker.
Read on to find out the pluses and minuses of the HP Veer 4G, and what it might tell us about future HP devices that will come down the pipeline.
