The Olympus E-P2 is an enhanced version of the original E-P1, and as such its core performance and capabilities remain unchanged. Like that model, the E-P2 packs a DSLR-sized sensor into a relatively compact body, with the added bonuses of interchangeable lenses, built-in stabilisation and HD video. The advantage of using a DSLR-sized sensor is much lower noise, higher dynamic range and a potentially shallower depth-of-field than a typical compact can offer – and in use the E-P2, like other Micro Four Thirds models before it, delivers all of these benefits. Sharing the same sensor as the E-P1, the image quality of the E-P2 is unsurprisingly identical, at least when using the same shooting parameters. As such you can expect much lower noise than a typical compact, although not quite in the same league as the best APS-C DSLRs like Nikon’s D5000 and D90. In our High ISO Noise results page you’ll see the E-P2 holds it together very well between 100 and 400 ISO and still looks good at 800 ISO. Between 1600 and 6400 ISO, the camera unsurprisingly suffers, but throughout the range it’s a big step-up from a typical compact. So while a good DSLR with an APS-C sensor will beat it on noise and dynamic range, the fact it’s so much better than a traditional compact will be all some buyers need to know. With the right lens, you can also enjoy a much shallower depth-of-field than a conventional compact.

Optically though, it´s a bit of a mixed bag. Its sharpness and resolving power are pretty good, especially in the centre of the frame, but they are hardly exceptional for a prime lens. Its "native" barrel distortion is very high for a rectilinear lens, although the algorithm used to correct it in-camera and in most raw converters is surprisingly effective, meaning most users will likely remain unaware of the issue. Chromatic aberrations are there for you to see if you actively looking for them, but they are rather unlikely to spoil an image. Sold without a lens hood, the Olympus 17mm f/2.8 is prone to flare and ghosting in certain situations, so try to avoid including strong light sources in the frame. On a more positive note, corner shading is minimal at f/2.8, and effectively goes away on stopping down. Bokeh is surprisingly nice for a wide-angle lens of such a short focal length. As to build quality and handling, they are obviously not on the same level as the lenses of old – but this could be said of almost any lens these days. Given that the angle of view and the relatively fast maximum aperture make this lens very well suited to street photography; the lack of a distance scale and DOF markings is a bit of a pity, as it makes zone focusing more complicated than it should be. Auto-focus is pretty fast on the E-P2, but by no means instantaneous – note however that with contrast-detect AF systems, the speed of focusing also depends on the sensor´s read-out speed, which means that the lens may perform better on a different or future MFT body. Overall, we enjoyed shooting with the Olympus M.ZUIKO Digital 17mm f/2.8 a lot – there are few lenses out there that beat it on the portability front, while its angle of view and fast maximum aperture make it an excellent walk-around lens. Priced at well below £300 in the UK and just under $300 in the US, it may not be a cheap lens but it´s quite a bit more affordable than the Panasonic Lumix G 14mm f2.5 ASPH we reviewed last month.

Jeżeli polegamy na automatyce aparatu i fotografujemy w formacie JPEG, to zdjęcia jakie otrzymujemy są ostre i pozbawione aberracji. Jest to świetna propozycja dla kogoś, kto potrzebuje dobrego i małego aparatu na daleki wyjazd wakacyjny. Jeśli jednak zamierzamy skorzystać z plików RAW i wydobywać maksimum możliwości z aparatu, to może się okazać, że jakość zdjęć nas rozczaruje. Trzeba więc będzie sporą ilość czasu poświęcić na obróbkę i przygotowanie zdjęć na komputerze. To wrażenie posiadania dwóch obiektywów w jednym wydaje się być uzależnione od tego, czy chcemy ambitnie popracować na fotografiami, czy też potraktujemy M.ZUIKO DIGITAL 17mm F2,8 jako idealny obiektyw "spacerowy" i dla świętego spokoju zapis zdjęć wykonywać w formie JPEG. Wyznaczenie końcowej oceny jest trudne. Jeżeli fotografujemy JPEG´ami i zdajemy się na automatykę aparatu to zdjęcia są dobrej jakości, a obiektyw zasługuje na ocenę dobrą. Amator, który chce czegoś więcej niż jest w stanie zaoferować zwykły aparat kompaktowy, będzie zestawem Olympus PEN + M.ZUIKO DIGITAL 17mm F2,8 bardzo zadowolony. Jednakże w oparciu o test wykonany na podstawie plików RAW, ocena M.ZUIKO DIGITAL 17mm F2,8 jest zdecydowanie mniej korzystna. Ostrość obrazu jest słaba, a aberracje mogę w niektórych sytuacjach niekorzystnie wpłynąć na zdjęcie.
