Ingram Publishers Services The Stukeley plays A1018204273
Sir Thomas Stukeley, the notorious English courtier, pirate, adventurer and soldier, died at the Battle of Alcazar in Morocco in 1578, while serving in the army of King Sebastian of Portugal. This volume comprises the first modern-spelling, annotated edition of two plays in which he is a major character: George Peele's 'The Battle of Alcazar' (c.1588), and the anonymous 'Famous History of the Life and Death of Captain Thomas Stukeley' (c.1596). In his extensive introduction and commentary, Charles Edelman discusses the plays' authorship, their many textual problems, and what they reveal about Elizabethan performance practices. He also challenges most of the traditional assumptions about them. This edition shows that both works, long held to be unperformable, are instead fascinating and worthwhile representatives of the most exciting age in the history of the theatre.

First to fight for right and freedom, and to keep our honor clean; We are proud to claim the title of United States Marine.¿ This first stanza of the United States Marines Corps' hymn already briefly describes what Marines are for, also mentioning two of it's important steps to a 21st century high-tech army. The Marines are a special unit in many ways. They are a manifold corps which uses all types of modern warfare and technology. In addition to that they enjoy a lot of attention and are extraordinarily often treated in Hollywood or the world-press. There is much to study in the Marines' 23 decades of existence, but a few moments stand out. These happenings are the historical structure which holds an ethos together. And it is this ethos that distinguishes the Marines from any other army in the world. Only after familiarizing with the history of the USMC it is possible to understand the self-perception of these warriors, which explains their status among the armed forces and their image.

The untold story of A-10 units in Operation Enduring Freedom reaches its conclusion with this second of two volumes focusing on the type's combat missions in Afghanistan. Featuring numerous first-hand accounts and photography from those who experienced the conflict, along with imagery from official military archives, this book offers a unique and detailed insight into the record of the A-10 in one of the 21st Century's most significant conflicts. Initially, the A-10 Thunderbolt was not a favorite of the USAF, which, prior to the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in 1990, was hoping to shunt this Cold War relic onto the US Army and Marine Corps. But since then, the 'Warthog', with its formidable armament, ruggedness and flexibility, has continually proven itself in combat and evolved into the world's premiere close support aircraft. In 2002 the Thunderbolt was at the forefront of Operation Enduring Freedom, the US occupation of Afghanistan.

In the final weeks of 1938, in the shadow of Kristallnacht and imminent war, a heartsick Italian maestro wrote a love song called "Tu Solamente Tu". Its lyrics lamented his forced separation from his wife, the Hungarian ballerina Margit Wolf, in the wake of Mussolini's edict banishing foreign Jews from Italy. The song, first recorded by Vittorio de Sica in 1939, catapulted to the top of the Hit Parade and earned its composer the moniker "the Italian Cole Porter". The German version, "Du Immer Wieder Du", would be performed by Zarah Leander, the foremost film star of the German Reich, and its English counterpart, "You, Fascinating You", by the Glenn Miller Army Air Force Band. Twenty-two years would pass before the maestro and his ballerina again met face-to-face. "You, Fascinating You" begins as a backstage romance and ends as an epic triumph of the human spirit.

In international as well as in German historical research on World War I the Statistics of German casualties include two million soldiers killed in action. On the other hand, the number of casualties is for the most part unknown, as well as the units they belonged to and at what time they occurred. The article describes casualties of eight infantry regiments from Lower Saxony, which at the outbreak of war were organised in two divisions as part of the 2nd Army. They jointly fought the battle of the frontiers, at Guise and at the Marne River. During the war the divisions were reorganised and some regiments fought on both the Western and the Russian front, others remained in the west and fought at Verdun and the Somme River. The regimental histories written by the respective regiments and the official German "Verlustlisten" (casualty lists) serve as empirical basis for a comparative representation of the deaths/casualties shown in monthly order. Those figures illustrate that the highest losses entered a total of in 1915 and that the casualties published in the "Sanitätsbericht" (German Army medical war history) should at least be taken with a grain of salt.
