In international as well as in German historical research on World War I the Statistics of German casualties include two million soldiers killed in action. On the other hand, the number of casualties is for the most part unknown, as well as the units they belonged to and at what time they occurred. The article describes casualties of eight infantry regiments from Lower Saxony, which at the outbreak of war were organised in two divisions as part of the 2nd Army. They jointly fought the battle of the frontiers, at Guise and at the Marne River. During the war the divisions were reorganised and some regiments fought on both the Western and the Russian front, others remained in the west and fought at Verdun and the Somme River. The regimental histories written by the respective regiments and the official German "Verlustlisten" (casualty lists) serve as empirical basis for a comparative representation of the deaths/casualties shown in monthly order. Those figures illustrate that the highest losses entered a total of in 1915 and that the casualties published in the "Sanitätsbericht" (German Army medical war history) should at least be taken with a grain of salt.
Renegade Games Studio Heroscape: Elites of Ullar and Ranoc Vipers Army Expansion
In his Wellspring poison-induced madness, the Valkyrie General Ullar has grown paranoid and violent. His elite Kyrie fighting force, once reserved to guard important dignitaries, is now deployed to the edges of Ullar's territory on orders to "cut out" anything that might pose a threat. The Vipers of Marr have a long history of using the tools of their enemies against them. The Ranoc Vipers are no different, slithering across the battlefield, wielding guns looted from Marro Warriors. Most who come face to face with one of these fearsome snakes find themselves unable to move, as though hypnotized by the Viper's undulations. This expansion includes two 3-figure Common Squads. The highly detailed, pre-assembled miniatures and 2 Army Cards are fully compatible with all Heroscape Battle Boxes, Master Sets, and Expansions. Ullar's elite Kyrie warriors strike with deadly precision, coordinating their attacks to overwhelm foes. When an Elite of Ullar is wounded, other unengaged Kyrie can swiftly move to respond, keeping your army in relentless motion. On the battlefield, Ranoc Vipers strike with hypnotic attacks that weaken enemies, move effortlessly across water, and dodge ranged assaults with uncanny agility.
William Collins The British Are Coming A1055581829
'To say that Atkinson can tell a story is like saying Sinatra can sing ... A powerful new voice has been added to the dialogue about [America's] origins as a people and a nation. It is difficult to imagine any reader putting this beguiling book down without a smile and a tear.' New York Times In June 1773, King George III attended a grand celebration of his reign over the greatest, richest empire since ancient Rome. Less than two years later, Britain's bright future turned dark: after a series of provocations, the king's soldiers took up arms against his rebellious colonies in America. The war would last eight years, and though at least one in ten of the Americans who fought for independence would die for that cause, the prize was valuable beyond measure: freedom from oppression and the creation of a new republic. Rick Atkinson, author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning An Army at Dawn and two other superb books about the Second World War has long been admired for his unparalleled ability to write deeply researched, stunningly vivid narrative history. In this new book, he tells the story of the first twenty-one months of America's violent effort to forge a new nation. From the battles at Lexington and Concord in spring 1775 to those at Trenton and Princeton in winter 1776-77, American militiamen and then the ragged Continental Army take on the world's most formidable fighting force and struggle to avoid annihilation. It is a gripping saga alive with astonishing characters: Henry Knox, the former bookseller with an uncanny understanding of artillery; Nathanael Greene, the blue-eyed bumpkin who becomes one of America's greatest battle captains; Benjamin Franklin, the self-made man who proves himself the nation's wiliest diplomat; George Washington, the commander in chief who learns the difficult art of leadership when the war seems all but lost. Full of riveting details and untold stories, The British Are Coming is a tale of heroes and knaves, of sacrifice and blunder, of redemption and profound suffering. Rick Atkinson has given stirring new life to the first act of America's creation drama.

GRIN The U.S. Marines - an inquiry into their history and image A1018561174
Pre-University Paper from the year 2010 in the subject Didactics - English - Applied Geography, grade: 1, , language: English, abstract: ¿From the halls of Montezuma, to the shores of Tripoli, We fight our country's battles in the air, on land and sea. First to fight for right and freedom, and to keep our honor clean; We are proud to claim the title of United States Marine.¿ This first stanza of the United States Marines Corps' hymn already briefly describes what Marines are for, also mentioning two of it's important steps to a 21st century high-tech army. The Marines are a special unit in many ways. They are a manifold corps which uses all types of modern warfare and technology. In addition to that they enjoy a lot of attention and are extraordinarily often treated in Hollywood or the world-press. There is much to study in the Marines' 23 decades of existence, but a few moments stand out. These happenings are the historical structure which holds an ethos together. And it is this ethos that distinguishes the Marines from any other army in the world. Only after familiarizing with the history of the USMC it is possible to understand the self-perception of these warriors, which explains their status among the armed forces and their image.

Schiffer Publishing Stuart Tank, Vol. 1 A1052793515
The Stuart light tanks were the first tanks taken into combat by US troops during WWII. Production of these vehicles can be broken into two categories: the early tanks powered by air-cooled radial engines, and late versions powered by twin V-8 engines. This volume explores the early, air-cooled vehicles, the M3, M3A1, and M3A3. Widely used both by the US Army and US Marines, as well as many Allied nations, these tanks, though lightly armed and armored, were mechanically sound and did much to stem the tide of Axis aggression during the early stages of the US entry into WWII. Through dozens of archival photos, including previously unpublished images, as well as detailed photographs of some of the finest existing examples of these vehicles, this early-war combat vehicle is explored and its history is explained. A companion volume will explore the later M5 and M5A1, and M8 Howitzer Motor Carriage versions. Part of the Legends of Warfare series.

Tatae's Promise: You will live… You will tell Internationally acclaimed. 13 Awards. "Riveting, Inspiring Masterpiece... Nothing short of brilliant... I will never forget it." Inspired by a never-before-told, true story of a young woman's escape from Auschwitz with her sister, Tatae's Promise is an extraordinary narrative of unimaginable courage, family, faith and enduring love. Experience Hinda's breathtaking life as it transforms from living in a happy home, to banishment to a ghetto, to prison, to the Auschwitz death camp, to escape, and then miraculously rebuilding her life. In 1940, Hinda was eighteen years old when an axe crashed through the front door of her home in Poland. Nazi soldiers swarmed inside, herded the family into an army truck and hauled them away for one reason: They were Jews. After thirty-two months of subsisting on a starvation diet, sleeping on a wooden floor in the Mlawa ghetto, Hinda was deported to Auschwitz. When incarcerated there for an additional two years, Hinda endured rabid hunger, slave labor, life threatening diseases, and barbarous brutalities while clinging to her father's promise: "I know for certain that you will live, and you will tell." These twelve words—a powerful presage written by her father, Tatae, in a letter to Hinda mere hours before the Gestapo murdered him—fueled her will to persevere. Incredibly, at the age of twenty-three, Hinda devised a daring plot to escape the exhaustively guarded gates of Auschwitz with her younger sister, Rachel. Hinda brilliantly executed the plan only to find the two of them running for their lives—from both Germans and Russians. Two subplots, featuring pivotal characters Wolf Yoskowitz and Dr. Walter Zeilhofen, intertwine with Hinda's life in surprising ways. Wolf, a young Jewish man, struggles to endure the horrors of Buchenwald concentration camp. Walter, a young German doctor, who risks his life, committing treason by secretly issuing curative medications to prisoners, reluctantly works at Auschwitz under the thumb of the notorious Dr. Josef Mengele, "The Angel of Death." According to the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum, there are less than two hundred documented, successful "prisoner escapes" from Auschwitz-Birkenau. Most of them were men. Hinda and Rachel's victorious escape was truly remarkable.
Malvern Hill marks a pivotal Civil War clash where armies contended for Richmond and fate hinged on strategic choices. Malvern Hill on July 1, 1862, marked the climax of the Seven Days' Battles around Richmond, Virginia. For the first time since the Civil War began, the full might of Maj. Gen. George B. McClellan's Union Army of the Potomac and Gen. Robert E. Lee's Confederate Army of Northern Virginia met on one field. The world watched and wondered as this high-stakes combat played out on the doorstep of the Confederate capital. The Union army emerged victorious with its superior positions and overwhelming artillery firepower, yet McClellan retreated from victory to establish a safe base on the James River. Lee's army secured a default victory simply by holding the battlefield and saving Richmond from capture. Francis Augustín O'Reilly's long-awaited Retreat from Victory: The Battle of Malvern Hill and the End of the Seven Days, July 1, 1862, is the first book-length treatment of this critical and pivotal combat. O'Reilly examines the singular struggle at Malvern Hill in depth and from a wide variety of perspectives, including its implications for the war, the armies, the opposing governments, the people, and slavery. He pieces together the tactical movements of troops on the battlefield and the intentions of leaders on the front lines and in the halls of government in Washington, D.C., and Richmond, Virginia. Above all, he gives voice to the soldiers, sharing their experiences in combat and on campaign. Two decades in the making, Retreat from Victory draws on hundreds of primary sources--many previously unused--including official records, diaries, newspapers, and regimental histories. O'Reilly's sound and reasoned conclusions are grounded in his deep archival research and keen understanding of the complex terrain. This climactic Civil War battle elevated General Lee's career and marked the beginning of the end of General McClellan's. It was a watershed moment when the Civil War transformed from a rebellion into a revolution. The conflict grew exponentially larger and more brutal, and ultimately doomed slavery in America. O'Reilly's Retreat from Victory provides a definitive account of the Battle of Malvern Hill and sets a standard that will endure for the foreseeable future.
Bloomsbury USA Armies of the First Sino-Japanese War 1894-95 A1062971732
Describes how newly modernized Japan waged war against China in its first overseas campaign, marking its rapid transition into Asia's leading military power only 30 years after emerging from centuries of feudalism. After the Meiji restoration of the Japanese imperial regime in 1868-77, modernization along Western lines of Japan's industry, communications and land and naval forces advanced with remarkable speed and, by the 1890s, the rejuvenated nation was ready to flex its muscles overseas. The obvious opponent was the huge but medieval Chinese Empire, and the obvious arena for war was Korea, a nearby Chinese protectorate that Japan had long coveted. (A secondary campaign would be fought on Formosa/Taiwan, an autonomous Chinese island protectorate.) In this study, author Gabriele Esposito describes the bloodthirsty course of the Japanese campaign in China, using colour illustrations and photos to showcase the organization, equipment and appearance of the various Chinese forces (China had no true national army), the Imperial Japanese Army and Navy, and, for the first time in English, the Korean and Formosan participants. Japan's victory left it confident enough to challenge Imperial Russia and, nine years later, it defeated it at the Battle of Tsushima where two-thirds of the Russian fleet was destroyed by the Japanese Navy. This victory confirmed Japan's place as Asia's leading military power, soon to become a realistic rival to the West.
