Abschnitt 1.1 gibt zunächst Aufschluss über die Relevanz des Themas und beschreibt die Ableitung der Forschungsfragen. In Abschnitt 1.2 wird der Aufbau der Arbeit dargestellt. Das Kapitel dient der Einführung in die Thematik und gibt eine Strukturübersicht, sodass das Forschungsthema klar herausgearbeitet ist. Statt die Perspektive fast ausschließlich auf das eigene Unternehmen zu richten, fokussieren sich Unternehmen immer stärker auf ihre Kunden. Diese können einen erheblichen Beitrag im Wertschöpfungsprozess leisten (Prahalad/Ramaswamy 2004, S. 5). So sehen 73 % der Marketingmanager den Fokus auf kundenzentrierte Themen als einen entscheidenden Aspekt für den Unternehmenserfolg (Brown 2014). Das spiegelt das ausgeprägte Interesse an Maßnahmen zum Kundenbeziehungsmanagement wider (u. a. Dowling/Uncles 1997, S. 71; Homburg/Bruhn 2013, S. 5). Dem ist auch das Kundenengagement eingegliedert. Das Kundenengagement wird in der Literatur zunehmend als wichtiges Element des Kundenbeziehungsmanagements verstanden, da es weitreichende Wirkungen auf das Unternehmen haben kann (Hennig-Thurau/Gwinner/Gremler 2002; Morgan/Hunt 1994; Schouten/McAlexander/Koenig 2007; van Doorn et al. 2010 S. 259f.). Nicht nur die Tatsache, dass das Kundenengagement nach wie vor als das Top-Thema des Marketing Science Instituts eingeordnet wurde (Marketing Science Institute o. Jahr), sondern auch die Vielzahl an Möglichkeiten zeigen die Relevanz des Themas auf (u. a. Bijmolt et al. 2010; Libai et al. 2010; Sawhney/Verona/Prandelli 2006). Die Art des Kundenengagements kann verschiedene Formen annehmen. Zahlreiche Studien befassen sich u. a. mit der Customer-to-Customer Interaktion, der Produkt- oder Service-Co-Kreation sowie dem Beschwerdeverhalten, welches ebenfalls in das Kundenengagement einzuordnen ist (Prahalad/Ramaswamy 2004; Hennig-Thurau et al. 2004; Hoyer et al. 2010; Jahn/Meyer 2013).
