Application of parallel manipulator has received lots of attention recently in the industry and the robotic community due to its high accuracy, high rigidity, high operation speed, high load capacity and high stiffness. Despite these advantages, the kinematic and dynamic analyses of parallel manipulators are extremely complicated. However, such models are important in terms of qualitative analysis of the required actuator forces to realize certain end- effector task (inverse dynamics), and computing the corresponding end-effector task based on certain input to the system (forward dynamics). Till date, not much general symbolic solution is reported to aid the above process. Most of the prior work required some form of heuristic, or introduction of extra spring/damper elements to approximate the solutions. This book addresses the possibility in using the state-of-the-art symbolic manipulation software tool DynaFlexPro to derive the general kinematic and dynamic equation of motion so that more accurate and convenient solution can be computed. We address these issues using the example of Stewart Platform and highlight the solution to the corresponding challenges.

Regulatory T cells (Tregs) play an important role in immune homeostasis, by maintaining tolerance to self-antigens and allergens as well as by limiting inflammatory tissue damage during chronic infections. Humans or mice lacking the Treg-associated transcription factor FOXP3 develop severe features of autoimmunity and allergy. Ectopic FOXP3 expression endows non-regulatory T cells with many of the hallmarks of regulatory T cells and transgenic reporter mice carrying a FOXP3-GFP indicated that FOXP3 expression correlates with suppressive T cells. Although Tregs can be generated in the thymus, their induction is observed in the periphery. The molecular mechanisms leading to Tregs generation in the periphery are still poorly understood. To gain insight into this key process we analyzed peripheral FOXP3 regulation. For this purpose we localized and cloned the human FOXP3 promoter into a reporter plasmid and characterized its activity in primary CD4+ T cells. In addition, we looked at factors, which regulate FOXP3 expression during the differentiation process from naïve T cells into the effectors cells.

The paradox of behaving in a self-harming way, while being fully cognizant of the feared consequences, is the hallmark of addiction. At its core are neurohormonal mechanisms, which resist volitional attempts at behaving contrary to what these mechanisms impel the organism to do. The high attrition rates and nearly complete decay of adherence observed in lifestyle change interventions suggest that health behaviors are the result of autonomous drives, which frustrate volitional interference. The implication for research is to abandon the untenable precept of health behaviors being controlled exclusively by reason. This work is an attempt at formulating a model with which to explain the behavioral paradox, and from which to develop and test strategies for more efficient lifestyle change interventions. It presents the results of a study which tested the engagement of cognitive feedback control mimicking the efficiency of the homeostatic feedback loop as the autonomous effector of human feeding and physical activity behaviors. These results suggest that the efficiency of lifestyle change interventions can be dramatically improved.
