GRIN Why are theoretically perfect and efficient capital markets so imperfect and volatile in practice? A1011146393
Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2010 in the subject Business economics - General, grade: 1,3, University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland, language: English, abstract: The Efficient market hypothesis can be considered as part of rational economics but it does not specify at all how individuals should or will act. Therefore it might be a useful model of the functioning of the market as a whole but it does not explain the behaviors of investors as well as managers and other participants. While the Efficient market hypothesis deals as a basis for understanding the normal working of the markets, from time to time it might happen that the market as a whole or an individual stock may act irrationally. Such behavior is well known and generally occurs when the market price of a share turns away from its intrinsic value. The result is what commonly is called a bubble. This term is often used but the reasons for the occurrence are quite unclear. In fact, at the same time as the market as a whole has become more efficient, instances of irrationality have become more common or at least appear to be. Therefore we try to discuss the question why capital markets, which are considered as efficient and perfect in theory, are volatile and imperfect in reality. The paper responds to this question by discussing mainly the irrational behavior of people by turning into the field of psychology. Furthermore it seeks for approaches of explanation conducted by different investment strategies containing among others an increased use of derivative instruments or single trades based on massive capacity which therefore influence prices. Methodology and Structure of the paper In general the paper can be divided in 3 parts, a theoretical as well as an analytical one and a final point the Conclusion (Part C) which sums up the basic findings of the paper. Whereas Part A can be regarded as delivering the theoretical background, Part B contains the empirical analysis based on several case studies. Chapter 1, 2 and 3 are providing the reader with the needed knowledge of the capital market, volatility and the efficient market hypothesis in order to assure the understanding of the more complex prosecution of the paper After discussing those fundamentals the paper soon takes a view on some instances of irrationality in Part B, but first of all delivers in Chapter 4, 5 and 6 some theories that attempt to explain such irrationalities. Finally the paper is finished by linking those theories with the observed instances of irrationality

THE CLEAR QURAN® Series is one of the most eloquent attempts to masterfully and accurately capture the elegance and vigor of the Quran in modern English. Its clarity for an average reader is evident in the choice of easy-to-understand words and phrases that reflect the original text's beauty, flow, and power. Crisis of Conscience presents the story of a struggle to prevent the erosion of a God-given freedom of conscience and the ensuing dilemma of choosing between loyalty to God and loyalty to one's religion. Former member of the Governing Body of Jehovah's Witnesses, Raymond Franz delivers a rare glimpse into the inner workings of the Watch Tower Society. In response to extraordinary events, Franz tells a unique account of the decision-making sessions of this religion's inner council and the powerful, sometimes dramatic, impact their decisions have on Jehovah's Witnesses. Crisis of Conscience offers a penetrating view of the supreme council of this organization, the Governing Body and their life altering power over human lives. While the events of Raymond Franz's departure from the Governing Body occurred in 1980, the organizational foundation and structure remains the same today, making this account relevant to a whole new generation. Content: Raymond Franz, formerly a Governing Body member of Jehovah's Witnesses, shares an account that reveals the inner workings and the decision-making processes of that Body, offering a penetrating view of the life altering power they have over human lives. The final nine of his sixty years as one of Jehovah's Witnesses were spent on this central executive council. Those years led to his crisis of conscience, which is the theme of this book. Based on the entire manuscript of Franz's 2008 printing of Crisis of Conscience, this fifth edition 2018, also includes: Foreword by David Henke, author of Spiritual Abuse Recovery Workbook, and founder of Watchmen Fellowship, Inc. - David Henke is a Christian apologist that specializes in the field of Jehovah's Witnesses, issues of mind control, spiritual abuse, and legalism. In addition to the above workbook, Henke has authored evangelistic and educational tracts, and articles. Excerpts from Franz's In Search of Christian Freedom - Crisis of Conscience references 30 pages from In Search of Christian Freedom in the footnotes; for the convenience of the reader, these pages have been added to Appendix B. Where is the "Great Crowd" Serving God? by Jon A. Mitchell, a former secretary to the Governing Body - As a secretary to the Governing Body, and member of the Service Department, Mitchell observed events during and immediately after Raymond Franz' resignation from the Governing Body and numerous people were moved, demoted or disfellowshipped. As a result Jon Mitchell authored a booklet called Where is The "Great Crowd" Serving God? This is an account of Jon's observations and his personal research from 1980 to 1981 while serving at Brooklyn Bethel. This booklet has been included in its entirety in Appendix C. Epilogue, The Copyright Owner's Story by Deborah Dykstra - Former regular pioneer and temporary special pioneer, Deborah Dykstra tells her journey of discovering that Jehovah's Witnesses were not the sound foundation that she thought they were, realizing instead that it is Jesus Christ himself that is the real "truth" and foundation to life as a Christian. Thereafter, she shares how she embarked on a 25 year friendship with Raymond and Cynthia Franz along with anecdotal stories about the Franz' lives. Raymond Franz died in 2010, however in this re-publishing of Crisis of Conscience based on it's very last printing in 2008, the authors story, heart and expressions of his love for God and his fellow man remain with us.

Hartung-Gorre The Lost Race against Time during “The Final Solution” A1057018342
An Unexpected Discovery of Clues The book about the fate of the Guggenheim family of Konstanz, launched in the spring of 2010 with the title “In Argentinien gerettet – in Auschwitz ermordet” (“Saved in Argentina – Murdered in Auschwitz”); seemed to have been completed. All the documents, which had been found during a two-year intensive search of various archives and memorial sites, had been checked and the results shared in interviews with the descendendants in Argentina. Admittedly, there were scant document to be had, since the letters between the interned Guggenheim family members and their relatives – now safe in Argentina – were no longer available; they had simply been lost. The lack of any correspondence from Camp Gurs, Camp Les Milles and Marseille to Buenos Aires is particularly unfortunate. Of course, the letters going the other way disappeared with the murder of Salomon, Toni and Dagobert Guggenheim in Auschwitz. The life of the three Guggenheims and the way to their destruction could be considered fully researched, given the lack of further evidence at the time. So it was a big surprise when, in June 2017, more than seven years after the publication of the book, a Jewish woman with German ancestors contacted the author from abroad; she expressed a keen interest in the documentation of the fate of the Guggenheim families of Konstanz and Donaueschingen. This contact was doubly surprising: for one thing, this person – Joan Rosenwald-Fradkin – got in touch not from Argentina, but from the USA, and her ancestors came not from Konstanz or Donaueschingen, but from Cologne. The other astonishing fact was that Joan’s father and aunt, the siblings Fritz and Lisel Rosenwald, had a close relationship with both Guggenheim families. Fritz Rosenwald had become friends with Isi Guggenheim during his three-year position with a Konstanz company, while his sister Lisel had a romantic relationship with Dagobert Guggenheim. These connections were neither documented in the available papers, nor did the descendants in Buenos Aires know about them. It turned out to be a special stroke of luck that the abundance of letters – a total of over 300 – written by Lisel and her parents in Cologne to their brother and son Fritz, who emigrated to New York City in 1938, had been preserved. It is especially the letters of Lisel, written to her brother every week from 1938 until her deportation at the end of 1941, that provide previously unknown details. Key among them are the emigration efforts of the Guggenheims waiting in Konstanz and Lisel’s relationship with Dagobert. The letters give an in-depth look into the emotional life of the Guggenheim and Rosenwald family members, as they desperately struggled to reach “safe harbors” abroad. Their hopes, their fears, their disappointments – all come to the fore in these letters. The reports also make clear the amount of time and the financial expenses Fritz Rosenwald devoted to overcoming the obstacles that kept getting in his sister’s way on the American side of the Atlantic. All this, while he was just getting settled in the USA. Right at the end, just before their deportation to Riga, Fritz receives the heartfelt gratitude of his family. It is especially touching that the siblings never reproach each other during all the dashed hopes, but instead, continue to give each other encouragement. Remarkable, too, is how the parents and sister, though being subjected to discrimination and harassment in Cologne, are concerned about Fritz establishing himself professionally in his new residence – New York City – and wanting him to have leisure time to enjoy his freedom. In short: the letters are an expression of a loving connection between the Rosenwald parents and children, especially between brother and sister. The insights from the letters into the relationships between the Guggenheim and Rosenwald families, their shared struggles and defeats in trying to escape the Nazi’s “Final Solution”; as well as Lisel R
