Basic Books The Self Delusion A1063173115
Basic Books The Self Delusion A1063173115
A New York Times-bestselling author reveals how the stories we tell ourselves, about ourselves, are critical to our lives We all know we tell stories about ourselves. But as psychiatrist and neuroscientist Gregory Berns argues in The Self Delusion, we don't just tell stories; we are the stories. Our self-identities are fleeting phenomena, continually reborn as our conscious minds receive, filter, or act on incoming information from the world and our memories. Drawing on new research in neuroscience, social science, and psychiatry, Berns shows how our stories and our self-identities are temporary and therefore ever changing. Berns shows how we can embrace the delusion of a singular self to make our lives better, offering a plan not centered on what we think will be best for us, but predicated on minimizing regrets. Enlightening, empowering, and surprising, The Self Delusion shows us how to be the protagonist of the stories we want to tell.

VDM Georgalou, M: The Discursive Construction of National Identi A1007831069
VDM Georgalou, M: The Discursive Construction of National Identi A1007831069
Media sport constitutes a significant arena within which discourses about national identities are continually articulated. This monograph analyses the football commentaries of the matches in which the Greece national football team competed during Euro 2004. Its focus is on the discursive means that the sportscasters deployed with a view to constructing a national identity that promoted unification and solidarity amongst the audience. In parallel, it explores how the representatives of this national collectivity, i.e. the footballers, their coach and the fans, were depicted. Adopting a discourse- historical framework (Reisigl and Wodak 2001; Wodak et al. 1999), it becomes evident that the sportscasters show great support for their home team forging points of identification with the audience. In doing so, they confirm the ideological power that media sport has in generating, reinforcing and disseminating national identities. The study will especially benefit students, instructors and researchers in discourse analysis, media studies, and sports sociology.

"Ithaca Forever can be read on its own as a tale of homecoming, revenge, and disguised identities, or, on another level, as a deconstruction of Homer's Odyssey. . . . It is Malerba's ability to move between Homeric citationality and remarkable inventiveness--keeping his work fresh and accessible for non-Homeric readers--which is one of the features that makes this book such a rewarding read." --from the Introduction by Emily Hauser

LAP LAMBERT Academic Publishing Eggens, L: Never 100% Black A1012170282
This study focuses on the role of racial identities in a society undergoing social transformation. Specifically, it looks at the construction of racial identity of black 'middle class' students at the University of Cape Town, South Africa. It examines how these students' understandings of being black, using 'race' as part of their identity, are constructed by drawing the boundaries to a collective identity and experienced through feelings of belonging. Young black South African students are moving into a world that was previously not for them, and find themselves in an 'in-between' position: between a historically constructed black world and a multiracial environment of the new South Africa. In this tension between different racial identities, the author argues, students strategically employ different discourses in order to both legitimate their position in society and preserve their 'blackness'. This study will be useful for anyone looking to deepen their theoretical knowledge on discourses of racial identity, as well as their understanding of the changing meaning of race in South Africa.

In this hugely influential book, Laclau and Mouffe examine the workings of hegemony and contemporary social struggles, and their significance for democratic theory. With the emergence of new social and political identities, and the frequent attacks on Left theory for its essentialist underpinnings, Hegemony and Socialist Strategy remains as relevant as ever, positing a much-needed antidote against 'Third Way' attempts to overcome the antagonism between Left and Right.
