Michael O'Mara Books Spitfire Stories A1053177396
CONTAINS EXCLUSIVE SOUND CLIPS FROM THE IMPERIAL WAR MUSEUMS ARCHIVES. Spitfire Stories, published in association with Imperial War Museums, is a fascinating anthology of first-hand stories from Spitfire heroes and heroines of the Second World War. The Spitfire is the world's most iconic aeroplane. Coming into its own during the Battle of Britain, it became famous during the Second World War as the only plane that could match the enemy fighters in the sky. Yet, even today, the history of the Spitfire contains many hitherto hidden or little-known stories of the men and women behind the plane; not only the gifted creators and inventors who brought the Spitfire to life, or the brave fighter pilots from many countries who triumphed in battle, but also the thousands of other people whose lives were affected by their personal connection to it – engineers, ground crew, factory or office workers, and their families. Spitfire Stories recounts the memories and stories of these people, from the birth of the iconic Spitfire in the 1930s to the present day. Among these accounts is the extraordinary tale of the fighter pilot who only discovered, fifty years on, the tragic truth of his last Spitfire flight, the businessman whose blank cheque changed the course of the war, the ninety-five-year-old Royal Air Force engineer who was determined to be reunited with his beloved Spit before he died, and the little girl who inspired the plane's creation – and went on to marry a movie star. Using documents, letters and photographs from the Imperial War Museums' unparalleled archive, plus exclusive first-hand interviews, these stories of the Spitfire are a revelatory collection of small but significant histories, to be treasured by all who love and admire the iconic plane.
Little, Brown Books for Young Readers The Little Stranger A1036313625
'Sarah Waters' masterly novel is gripping, confident, unnerving and supremely entertaining' Hilary Mantel In a dusty post-war summer in rural Warwickshire, a doctor is called to a patient at lonely Hundreds Hall. Home to the Ayres family for over two centuries, the Georgian house, once grand and handsome, is now in decline, its masonry crumbling, its gardens choked with weeds, its owners - mother, son and daughter - struggling to keep pace with a changing society. But are the Ayreses haunted by something more sinister than a dying way of life? Little does Dr Faraday know how closely, and how terrifyingly, their story is about to become entwined with his. 'The #1 book of the year . . . several sleepless nights are guaranteed' Stephen King 'Chilling . . . a meditation on the nature of the British and class, and how things are rarely what they seem' Kate Mosse 'Not only is it tremendously rich, it's an absolute treat to read - the kind of thing you desperately want to finish and then feel bereft when you do' Bridget Collins 'Waters has determined to scare the pants off her rightly devoted audience. She succeeds unquivocally' Erica Wagner, The Times 'A brilliantly observed story, verging on the comedy, about Britain on the cusp of modern age' Independent on Sunday
**Longlisted for the Baillie Gifford Prize for Non-Fiction** The definitive history of Britain's tumultuous relationship with Europe - as it's never been told before. 'Powerful, precise, morally engaged, wonderfully alert to character, context and the greater purpose of political life' -- Rory Stewart, author of Politics on the Edge 'Will stand for many years as the authoritative political history' -- David Kynaston, author of Austerity Britain, 1945-1951 'A cut above other Brexit accounts . . . even the most passionate Remainer - or Leaver - should enjoy it enormously' -- Dominic Sandbrook, The Sunday Times In this lively history, acclaimed writer Tom McTague chronicles the battle of ideas, events and personalities that first took the country into the Common Market in 1973, only to take it out of the European Union in an explosive referendum a little over forty years later. A riveting story of the clashing ideals that have pulled at Britain's public imagination for more than seven decades, Between the Waves illuminates the conflicts between leading twentieth century politicians and the lesser-known actors in this great post-war drama: the Eurosceptic student radicals, Cold Warriors, eccentric billionaires and political strategists who turned the tide of history. Ultimately, this book raises that most elemental of questions: who are we? 'A sweeping, impressive and ambitious history of modern Europe' Helen Lewis, author of Difficult Women

Pen & Sword Books Ltd Warships After Washington A1035701797
The Washington Treaty of 1922, designed to head off a potentially dangerous arms race between the major naval powers, agreed to legally binding limits on the numbers and sizes of the principal warship types. In doing so, it introduced a new constraint into naval architecture and sponsored many ingenious attempts to maximise the power of ships built within those restrictions. It effectively banned the construction of new battleships for a decade, but threw greater emphasis on large cruisers. This much is broadly understood by anyone with an interest in warships, but both the wider context of the treaty and the detail ramifications of its provisions are little understood. The approach of this book is novel in combining coverage of the political and strategic background of the treaty - and the subsequent London Treaty of 1930 - with analysis of exactly how the navies of Britain, the USA, Japan, France and Italy responded, in terms of the types of warships they built and the precise characteristics of those designs. This was not just a matter of capital ships and cruisers, but also influenced the development of super-destroyers and large submarines. Now for the first time warship enthusiasts and historians can understand fully the rationale behind much of inter-war naval procurement. The Washington Treaty was a watershed, and this book provides an important insight into its full significance.

GRIN Four Major Transformations in Canadian History Relating to Its Native Inhabitants A1017481856
Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2008 im Fachbereich Geschichte - Amerika, Note: 1,3, University of Toronto (-), Veranstaltung: Introduction to Canadian History, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: History explains the past. Dealing with the past, everybody quickly realizes that there are some things that have changed and some that have remained the same. There are certain periods in history when rapid changes occur and others when time seems to stand still. Often periods of transformation are triggered by technical developments, changing natural circumstances, or new ideologies. These affect each other and create a new situation. In Canadian history, all of these components initiated transformations and we can interpret these transformations ourselves. H. V. Nelles explains in A Little History of Canada where he sees major transformation in Canadian history. After presenting these in a short analysis, I will show another structure which emphasizes four major transformations that relate to Native Canadians. The first transformation occurred before 1500 when Canada became inhabited by its indigenous nations. Afterwards France transformed the continent until her defeat in 1763. This was the end of the fierce competition between Britain and France which meant Natives could no longer take advantage of their position as military allies. Under British rule the third period of transformation started and a new state formed in 1867: the Dominion of Canada. The British continued to strongly influence Canada throughout the industrialization and Victorian Age. All over this time Natives were oppressed. The fourth transformation started when Natives were allowed to fight for Canada, their home country, during the First World War.
A beloved Japanese modern classic about our special connection with cats and how they can change our lives over the course of a lifetime 'Cat lovers, prepare to weep' The Times 'A cat classic' Catherine Lacey 'Profoundly real... and beautifully written' Elif Batuman 'Aglow with incidental joys' Rivka Galchen *Winner of the Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation Translation Prize 2026* On a cool summer evening in 1977, Mayumi Inaba hears a forlorn cry. She follows the sound to the banks of Tokyo's Tamagawa River and finds a newborn kitten dangling from a fence, abandoned. Overcome by tender affection, she takes the cat back to the small apartment she shares with her husband and christens her Mii: so begins an unshakeable bond. Over the next twenty years, we follow Inaba, a poet and novelist by moonlight, as she pursues quiet solitude and a room of her own. Through it all, Mii, a fiercely independent creature in her own right, is her confidante and muse. This beloved Japanese modern classic is not just a love letter to companionship: it's a poignant, searching meditation on the forces that enable us to connect, to create and to build a life. 'Reveals the profound respect, and compassion, that a friendship with an animal can inspire' Sigrid Nunez, New Yorker Translated by Ginny Tapley Takemori **Readers ADORE Mii** 'A lovely little gem' 'Gentle and enchanting and had me in floods by the end' 'Absolutely beautiful' 'Sweet and heartbreaking' 'Told with grace, beauty and love'

Taylor & Francis eBooks Anglophone Indian Women Writers, 1870-1920 A1046922840
The result of extensive archival recovery work, Ellen Brinks's study fills a significant gap in our understanding of women's literary history of the South Asian subcontinent under colonialism and of Indian women's contributions and responses to developing cultural and political nationalism. As Brinks shows, the invisibility of Anglophone Indian women writers cannot be explained simply as a matter of colonial marginalization or as a function of dominant theoretical approaches that reduce Indian women to the status of figures or tropes. The received narrative that British imperialism in India was perpetuated with little cultural contact between the colonizers and the colonized population is complicated by writers such as Toru Dutt, Krupabai Satthianadhan, Pandita Ramabai, Cornelia Sorabji, and Sarojini Naidu. All five women found large audiences for their literary works in India and in Great Britain, and all five were also deeply rooted in and connected to both South Asian and Western cultures. Their works created new zones of cultural contact and exchange that challenge postcolonial theory's tendencies towards abstract notions of the colonized women as passive and of English as a de-facto instrument of cultural domination. Brinks's close readings of these texts suggest new ways of reading a range of issues central to postcolonial studies: the relationship of colonized women to the metropolitan (literary) culture; Indian and English women's separate and joint engagements in reformist and nationalist struggles; the 'translatability' of culture; the articulation strategies and complex negotiations of self-identification of Anglophone Indian women writers; and the significance and place of cultural difference.
