Professor Bengt Svensson has enjoyed a comfortable life. Each summer he leaves the southern Swedish city of Lund to spend his holidays at the quiet resort of Tällberg on the shores of Lake Siljan. Here, at the Hotel Dalecarlia, he settles down to several months of painting and catching butterflies. It is midsummer and the fragrance of wild flowers is in the air while the gentle slopes are echoing with violin music. As always, he joins in the merry solstice celebrations when, one morning, he falls prey to the charms of Svea - a little girl of barely teenage years with long blonde hair, blue eyes and alluring appearance. Suddenly everything changes. Smitten by her beauty, his health deteriorates as he seeks her presence. As the festivities planned for his sixtieth birthday draw closer, Bengt senses an aching void of loneliness. But surely it's far too late to change his lifestyle now. Worse still, neither the obliging hotel staff nor a local doctor seem capable of helping him. Then, fearing his life is drawing to an untimely end, he abandons all restraint.

'A richly entertaining history of the ways in which, for 3,000 years, the church has tied itself in knots over sex (and love and marriage) ... fabulous' Observer The Bible observes that God made humanity 'for a while a little lower than the angels'. If humans are that close to angels, does the difference lie in human sexuality and what we do with it? In a single lifetime, Christianity or historically Christian societies have witnessed one of the most extraordinary about-turns in attitudes to sex and gender in human history, bringing liberation for some and fury and fear for others. This book by Oxford's Emeritus Professor of the History of the Church seeks to calm fears and encourage understanding by telling the 3000-year-long tale of Christians encountering sex, gender and the family, with noises off from their sacred texts. It beckons us to pay attention to the sheer glorious complexity and contradictions in the history of Christianity, an epic of ordinary and extraordinary Christians trying to make sense of themselves and of humanity's deepest desires, fears and hopes.

Lit Verlag The South Caucasus at the Crossroads A1000992169
Written by a highly respected expert in the field, the book addresses some of this little known region's most vital issues: territorial conflicts, oil and natural gas resources, geopolitical complexities and pipeline politics, as well as the successes and failures of democratic processes in the post-Soviet countries of Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia. The future of these newly independent states, where Iran and Turkey, as well as Russia, the U.S. and the EU are vying for political and economic influence is still being determined, and it is more clear every day that events in the Caucasus and Caspian Sea region have the potential to impact European security. The author looks at the challenges faced by these young South Caucasian countries and examines the prospects for future peace and prosperity in the region. The "South Caucasus at the Crossroads" is essential reading for students and researchers of post-Soviet history and Caucasus studies, sociology, Caspian Sea politics, political science and international relations. Elkhan Nuriyev is currently Professor of Political Science at Western University in Baku, Azerbaijan

Her in-tray is full of problems - and at the top of the pile is the problem of Wilkins and Wilkins. Trailer park boy DI Ryan Wilkins, interesting looking in baggy trackies and over-large lime-green puffa. In his personnel file is a handwritten note scribbled by the outgoing Super: 'Do not, repeat not, give him responsibility.' A professor of literature finds herself caught up in a work of fiction…literally; from the New York Times bestselling author of The Seven Year Slip and The Dead Romantics. Eileen Merriweather knows a thing or two about romance. As a professor of literature, she teaches prestigious courses on history’s greatest romantics, but one week out of the year she abandons her dusty textbooks and makes a pilgrimage to the Hudson Valley with her best friend Pru to meet their Super Smutty Book Club in person, and celebrate the romance series that brought them together—Quixotic Falls. It’s a week of wine and happily-ever-afters. Or it’s supposed to be. Pru bails at the last minute, and Elsy winds up lost in Hudson Valley—alone. In a thunderstorm. When she takes shelter in a bookstore, she immediately gets on the bad side of its grumpy (and infuriatingly sexy) owner, and finds herself in a quaint town that feels like it’s right out of a book… Because it is. Eloraton can’t be real, and yet… she’s here. The town is everything she imagined from her favorite series, where the candy store’s honey taffy is always sweet, and the local bar’s burgers are always a little burnt, and rain always comes in the afternoon. It’s perfect. A place built on meet-cutes and storybook endings. Except, there’s something off in Eloraton. Because nothing changes, nothing moves, trapped in the last place the late author of Quixotic Falls left them. Which must be why Elsy is here: to find an ending to this last story, the one the author never finished. The only problem? The bookstore owner never wants the story to end, and he might be the one person who can help her imagine this final happily-ever-after. And maybe find one for herself.
