This work presents the case of the American economy as a repudiation of the two-stage theory of capitalist development advanced by theorists like Hilferding, Steindl and Baran and Sweezy. Various cases from the American economy are presented to contradict the argument that with the emergence of large-scale industry competition among capitals is eliminated or highly restricted. The experience of the American automobile industry confirms Marx's argument that competition and the concentration and centralization of capital are not opposites where the emergence of one entails the disappearance of the other. The American case also confirms Schumpeter argument that a monopoly position cannot be sustained for any considerable period. The experience of capitalism continues to demonstrate that its gale of creative destruction is always at work bringing down whatever barriers are erected to prevent its expansion. General Motors' battle to enter the high-volume, low-cost market dominated by Ford is a good example. In the later decades of the twenty-century foreign firms began to compete effectively and to challenge the market dominance of the American brands.

In Bangladesh (147, 570 km2) coastal region covers almost 20% (29,000 km2) of the country and also it covers more than 30% of the cultivable lands of the country where 53% of the coastal areas are affected by salinity. The success of sustainable agriculture in coastal region is very much dependent upon the availability of cheap and good quality organic amendments. Among the sources of available organic amendments vermicompost, oilcake and bioslurry may beneficial due to having potential source of readily available plant nutrients, growth enhancing substances, and a number of beneficial microorganisms like nitrogen fixing, P solubilizing, reducing salinity and cellulose decomposing organisms. In Bangladesh, application of low cost and available organic amendments may be a good strategy for the management of high saline soil and also for the availability of nutrients for soil and plants. The present investigation deals with the amelioration of salinity and nutrient availability of saline soils (collected from Batiaghata Upazilla under Khulna District in Bangladesh) through the use of organic amendments such as vermicompost, oilcake and bioslurry.

Indeed, rankings of developed nations along profitability indicators place Germany at the end of the scale. Critics attribute that situation mainly to the German banking system being overbanked and overbranched. The purpose of this paper is to analyze that notion and to examine the German market and competitive landscape of the retail banking industry. The analysis contains four sections. The first section compares profitability ratios and indicators of German banks to their peers¿ performances. The study produces surprising results. Despite the ostensibly high branch density, Germany¿s banks operate very cost efficiently. Yet it is their inability to generate sufficient income that results in the sluggish net earnings. Consequently, in the second section, the authors examine the German banking system and portray and compare its peculiarities in order to find out if the income problems are inherent to the system. More than in any other country, public banks dominate the market and, together with the cooperative banks, do not follow the economic principle of profit maximization. Moreover, the public banks have also received unjust government subsidies in the form of the maintenance and guarantee obligations. Thus, one presumes that private German banks operate in a very difficult system. The third section then takes a closer look at the market and analyzes the bank density, branch density and competition which the system produces. In the past, waves of intra-group consolidations have occurred. Similarly, branch networks have been thinned out especially by the private banks in an effort to cut costs. The result is that the current situation does not appear overly overbanked when put into perspective to the population, area, productivity and customer business. However, the German banking market is very competitive, and calls for further consolidations aim at decreasing competition rather than realizing synergies. In the fourth and last section, an appraisal of the current system is presented. Customers benefit from the current structure as it allows for easier access to credit compared to other countries, offers banking services to everybody at low costs and appears to be inherently stable. Thus, Germany is overbanked in the sense of high competition which negatively impacts bank profitability. Yet good companies should also be profitable in a competitive environment.

With moderate care and minimal maintenance, the telescope and mount canlastforgenerations. These instruments provide sharp, crisp high-contrast images of the Moon and planets. They are less susceptible to the effects of unstable air than larger ones, and because of their low maintenance and durability they are ideal for the parent educator or lifelong learner. Until recently, however, the high cost ofsmalltelescopesofsufficientqualityforseriousastronomicalusehaslimited theiraccessibility. During the past decade, innovations in optical design and manufacture have loweredcostandimprovedquality.Currentdevelopmentsinlensdesignmakeit possibletoproduceaffordablerefractingtelescopeswithshortertubelengthsand greater versatility. The once very costly 90-mm Maksutov–Cassegrain; with its optimumcombinationofeffectiveopticsandportability,nowsellsforamodest price. I have often seen small instruments referred to as “grab and go” or “quick look;”notworthyofconsiderationforseriousobserving.Imaintaintheycanbe much more. Despite their limits in types of observation, 80-mm refractors and 90-mm Maksutovs have sufficient aperture and magnifying power to provide a lifetimeofobservingpleasure.Theyareidealforlunaroccultationmeasurements, tracking the solar activity cycle, observing variable stars and measuring binary ix x Preface stars. Although all the activities described here are equally applicable to larger instruments,noneofthemrequireanaperturelargerthan80mm.Through the use of common digital cameras, the limiting stellar magnitude andimagescaleofsmalltelescopescanbeincreaseddramatically,thusproviding resultsonenormallyexpectsfromlargerinstruments.Muchofthisbookapplies thatprincipletomakinginterestingandusefulastronomicalobservations.Ihave takennovelapproachestoextendingtheuseofsmallinstrumentsforquantitative observations by applying unique methods for the analysis of digital camera photographs.
