Simon & Schuster direkt 20th Century Boys A1053694271
A deluxe bind-up edition of Naoki Urasawa’s award-winning epic of doomsday cults, giant robots and a group of friends trying to save the world from destruction! Humanity, having faced extinction at the end of the 20th century, would not have entered the new millennium if it weren’t for them. In 1969, during their youth, they created a symbol. In 1997, as the coming disaster slowly starts to unfold, that symbol returns. This is the story of a group of boys who try to save the world. “My father is the Friend?” Kanna asks as she confronts the grim truth. With a heart full of despair, it will take everything for Kanna to continue the fight against the Friends. Meanwhile, Koizumi and Sadakiyo manage to escape the pursuit of the Dream Navigators, but not for long. Can Kanna, caught in an emotional struggle between her fate and the future of the Earth, step forward and head to the rescue of Koizumi? As our heroes continue their fight against the Friends, longtime secrets are revealed and more of Kenji’s friends reunite. The war against the Friends has reached yet another crescendo…

Penguin Books Ltd I Will Greet the Sun Again A1069996781
'A triumph... tender and gut-wrenching... a book of astonishing accomplishment and bravery ' Guardian 'I will be thinking about these characters for the rest of my life' Kaveh Akbar, author of Martyr! A searing, sunlit debut about the powerful bonds that make and break an Iranian-American family Three young brothers leave Los Angeles in the dead of night for Iran, taken by their father from their mother to a country and an ancestral home they barely recognize. They return to the Valley months later, spit back into American life and changed in inexorable ways. Under the dazzling light of the California sun, our protagonist, the youngest brother, begins to piece together a childhood shattered by his father's violence, a queer adolescence marked by a shy, secret love affair with a boy he meets on the basketball court, and his ever-changing status as a Muslim in America at the turn of the new millennium. Lyrical and open-hearted, I WILL GREET THE SUN AGAIN is an unforgettable portrait of a family being torn apart, and a boy emerging from its ashes. 'Life-affirming... Khabushani is a talented writer' Sunday Times 'Exquisite, heart-breaking, incredibly beautiful' Caleb Azumah Nelson, author of Open Water and Small Worlds

GRIN The 1990s: The Celtic Tiger, Immigration, and Racism in Ireland A1008016765
Seminar paper from the year 2004 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 1,3, University of Heidelberg (Anglistisches Seminar), course: Emigration and the Irish, language: English, abstract: The headline ¿She moves through the boom¿ is not my invention, but it is basically what this essay is about: Ann Marie Hourianne describes what modern Irish everyday life looks like at the turn of the millennium: Ireland between Londonisation and shepherds, between New York lifestyle and traditional St. Patrick¿s Day. This essay is about the other side of the story: The point from which Ireland started its boom in the late 1980s, early 1990s, a country caught in deep depression. There is an account of the political measures taken to turn the development round, how these measures affected the country, and a little bit of economic theory to try and explain these developments on a smaller scale. To round off the economic side of the development, there is also a critical analysis of the phenomenon often called the Celtic Tiger. The second part of the essay is about how Ireland turned from emigration to immigration. Asylum-seekers became a major issue in Ireland in the second half of the 1990s, and the focus in this essay is on separating myth from truth by comparing the asylum-seekers¿ and refugees¿ situation in Ireland with the situation and figures of other European countries. Finally, the conclusion tries to combine these two areas dealt with in the essay and gives an outlook on possible future developments and action against racism.

HarperCollins US Krampus A1035206858
Santa Claus, my dear old friend, you are a thief, a traitor, a slanderer, a murderer, a liar, but worst of all you are a mockery of everything for which I stood. You have sung your last ho, ho, ho, for I am coming for your head. . . . I am coming to take back what is mine, to take back Yuletide . . . The author and artist of The Child Thief returns with a modern fabulist tale of Krampus, the Lord of Yule and the dark enemy of Santa Claus One Christmas Eve in a small hollow in Boone County, West Virginia, struggling songwriter Jesse Walker witnesses a strange spectacle: seven devilish figures chasing a man in a red suit toward a sleigh and eight reindeer. When the reindeer leap skyward, taking the sleigh, devil men, and Santa into the clouds, screams follow. Moments later, a large sack plummets back to earth, a magical sack that thrusts the down-on-his-luck singer into the clutches of the terrifying Yule Lord, Krampus. But the lines between good and evil become blurred as Jesse's new master reveals many dark secrets about the cherry-cheeked Santa Claus, including how half a millennium ago the jolly old saint imprisoned Krampus and usurped his magic. Now Santa's time is running short, for the Yule Lord is determined to have his retribution and reclaim Yuletide. If Jesse can survive this ancient feud, he might have the chance to redeem himself in his family's eyes, to save his own broken dreams . . . and to help bring the magic of Yule to the impoverished fold of Boone County.

Vermilion A Kingdom and a Village A1075529084
An erudite and entertaining history of Moscow, a city whose rich past offers crucial insight into contemporary global politics 'A marvellous book' HELEN RAPPAPORT, author of The Rebel Romanov 'Every page pulses with individual stories and historical insights' MARK GALEOTTI, author of A Short History of Russia 'Morrison is the perfect biographer of Moscow' SHAUN WALKER, author of The Illegals Moscow stands at the centre of a nation comprising eleven percent of the globe's landmass, eleven time zones and nearly one hundred and fifty million people, some thirteen million of whom live in the capital. A Kingdom and a Village vividly brings to life Russia's heart and soul, tracing its transformation from a 'big village' into a metropolis of vast geopolitical import. It is a stranger-than-fiction arc. The last century alone has featured invasions and battles, the destruction and reconstruction of sacred landmarks, and the collapse of the Soviet republic - not to mention the rise of an authoritarian leader who is a keen student of Russian history. Morrison reaches back to the city's founding as a fortress on a river nearly a millennium ago. In the following centuries, any number of external forces - from Tatar Mongols and Swedes to Napoleon and Hitler - set their sights on Moscow, bolstering its self-conception as a glittering prize and site of perpetual defence and resurrection. Understanding Moscow not only unlocks the spellbinding mysteries of Russia's past, but also the grim logic of its present. A Kingdom and a Village is an essential guide to a people and a nation. 'Magisterial ... gripping' BEN RHODES, author of The World As It Is 'A mesmerising tale of how Moscow came to be' JILL DOUGHERTY, author of My Russia 'Combines taut storytelling with penetrating analysis' REBECCA REICH, University of Cambridge

Lindisfarne Books The Rose of the World A1006250790
Lindisfarne Press is proud to publish the first English translation of this masterpiece of contemporary Russian spiritual literature, a work in the tradition of Dante and Blake -- truly a book for the new millennium. Daniil Andreyev, the son of a famous pre-revolutionary writer, was born in 1906, in Berlin. He was brought up by an aunt, the wife of a Moscow physician. Coming of age in the new Russia of Marxist-Leninist atheist materialism, Daniil Andreyev recognized the incompatibility of his gifts and propensities with the values ruling society. What were his gifts? And organic, innate religiosity; a visionary capacity to explore alternate realities; and passionate love of history as the living current through which all lives flow. Andreyev earned his living as a typeface designer while, secretly, by night, writing poetry and prose that could not be published. During these years he spent much of his spare time in nature, communicating with nature spirits, the elements, and the being of the earth itself. Conscripted in 1942 but, because of a weak constitution, assigned to the army as a non-combatant, he entered Leningrad by way of Lake Ladoga, burying the dead in mass graves as he recited funeral prayers over them. Returning to Moscow after the War, he resumed his clandestine novel writing. Reading aloud from this work, the authorities suspected him of creating an anti-Soviet group and perhaps even planning the assassination of Stalin. As a result, in 1947, he and his wife were arrested. After a lengthy investigation, he was condemned to 25 years in prison, she to a labor camp for the same duration. Everything written before the arrest was destroyed. In prison, however, his visionary capacities were enhanced. "A new stage of my metahistorical and transphysical cognition began" he wrote. "The long hours of metahistorical illumination became more frequent. Long rows of nights were transformed into continuous contemplation and comprehension".
