The phase-locked loop (PLL) is a feedback control system, used to lock the output frequency and phase according to the frequency and phase of input signal. It can also be used as a frequency synthesizer for modulation and demodulation circuits. In general, PLL is used in both transmitting and receiving terminals of wireless communication systems. A nearly description of PLL appeared in the paper by Appleton in 1923. It was conceived by H. De Bellecize in 1932. Since then, it is widely used in applications involving automatic control of phase or frequency, such as applications in communications, control systems, measurements and instrumentation and in many other applications. The synchronization of horizontal and vertical scan in televisions produced the first widespread use of PLL. One of the first large-scale industrial applications of the PLL (back in the yearly 1950s) was the color sub-carrier recovery in color TV receivers. This work illustrates the modeling of high speed PLL applicable for very high frequency (VHF) communication systems. Details of theoretical estimation of the model and its simulation on MatLab Platform in behavioral level is also presented in the book.

This monograph sheds some light on error correction code aided channel estimation, by focusing on code-aided phase estimation and ambiguity resolution (PEAR) algorithms. In particular, these algorithms exploit both pilot and coded-data symbols collected at a receiver for PEAR. Specifically, extensions are made to previous works, by studying the impact of pilot insertion on the Cramér-Rao bound (CRB) and the performance of PEAR algorithms, provided that the spectrum efficiency and the total energy consumption per bit to noise ratio keep invariant. The CRB for phase estimation is first derived. The general expectation-maximization (EM) method is then particularized for deriving an EM-based phase estimator. The convergence behavior of this estimator is investigated as well. After that, the PEAR algorithms reported in the literature are introduced, and an alternative method with a reduced complexity is proposed. Finally, a whole receiver is represented by one factor graph, and a phase estimation method is derived based on the sum-product algorithm (SPA). Extensive simulations are made to evaluate the CRB and the performance of the proposed algorithms.

As compared to the production of mere 4,000 vehicles in 1950, the production of the industry crossed the historic landmark of 10 million vehicles in 2006. Today, the industry produces a wide range of automobiles and auto-components catering to both the domestic as well as foreign markets. The development of the industry has been shaped by the demand on the one hand and the government interventions on the other; the influence of the latter being considerable. The evolution of Indiäs automotive industry is identified to have occurred in four phases. In the first (1947-1965) and second phase (1966-1979), the important policies identified were related to protection, indigenisation and regulation of the industry. On the one hand, these policies helped India to build an indigenous automotive industry, while on the other it led to unsatisfactory industry performance. In the third phase (1980-1990), the single most important policy identified was the one with regard to relaxation in the means of technology acquisition. The foreign competition inducted into the industry transformed its dynamics. Lastly, in the fourth phase (1991 onwards) the liberalisation with regard to foreign investment had a significant influence on the Indian automotive industry as we see it today. This work traces the evolution of the automotive industry from its inception to present day and identifies the important policies made by the Indian government.
