VDM Hamid, Z: Decision to Move A1008897114
This book examines Malaysian women employment patterns in the service sector and the influence of employment on migration. It focuses on the female labor force in the service sector, the development of the service sector worldwide, theories of female migration, and the application of an individual-level of the Logit model. The data are accessed from the second-wave of the Malaysian Family Life Survey, Before estimating the relationship between the explanatory variables and the decision to migrate, steps are taken to avoid sample selection bias by normalizing the non-migrants' age conditional on the migrants' last-move age. The analysis from the Logit model supports the universal view that demographic and cultural variables affect the decision to migrate. This book is especially useful to academics who are specializing in labor economics and gender studies, or anyone who may be interested in analyzing female migration and employment patterns in the service sector.

University Of Illinois Press Mennel, B: Women at Work in Twenty-First-Century European Ci A1050375062
From hairdressers and caregivers to reproductive workers and power-suited executives, images of women's labor have powered a fascinating new movement within twenty-first-century European cinema. Social realist dramas capture precarious working conditions. Comedies exaggerate the habits of the global managerial class. Stories from countries battered by the global financial crisis emphasize the patriarchal family, debt, and unemployment. Barbara Mennel delves into the ways these films about female labor capture the tension between feminist advances and their appropriation by capitalism in a time of ongoing transformation. Looking at independent and genre films from a cross-section of European nations, Mennel sees a focus on economics and work adapted to the continent's varied kinds of capitalism and influenced by concepts in second-wave feminism. More than ever, narratives of work put female characters front and center--and female directors behind the camera. Yet her analysis shows that each film remains a complex mix of progressive and retrogressive dynamics as it addresses the changing nature of work in Europe.

Universitätsverlag Winter GmbH Heidelberg Symbol and Symptom A1000942569
This study analyses the literary motif of the 'femme fatale' in selected nineteenth-century English poems from Romanticism and the Victorian Age to the fin de siècle. As a contribution to the third wave of feminist literary criticism, it interrogates feminist findings about this image of femininity. The re-readings undertaken in each chapter challenge second-wave feminist critical practices of politicising dualistic social constructions of female sexuality, such as marginalisation, objectification and a silencing of the female voice as well as phallocentrism, sexist stereotyping and exploitative male voyeurism. In key poems of that era, my study problematises feminist conclusions about poetic misogyny and authorial chauvinism which result from those programmatic parameters. It can be shown that the texts not only question stultifying constructions of femininity but also of masculinity.

Soundings Revelations of a Lady Detective A1071610769
Soundings Revelations of a Lady Detective A1071610769
'Owing to frequent acquaintance with peril, I had become unusually hardened for a woman.' Mrs Paschal, the heroine of Revelations of a Lady Detective, is regularly consulted by the police and serves as an undercover agent as well as investigating her own cases. But even though she is 'verging on 40', she throws herself into cases with verve and gusto and has no hesitation in infiltrating a deadly secret society or casting off her crinolines in order to plummet into a sewer on the trail of a criminal. Mrs Paschal is only the second ever professional female detective in a work of fiction. First published in 1864, these works are of historical significance because for over 20 years they remained the only books to feature a female detective as a protagonist.

Anchor Academic Publishing Naughty Girls and Gay Male Romance/Porn: Slash Fiction, Boys' Love Manga, and Other Works by Female "Cross-Voyeurs" in the U.S. Academic Discourses A1026858519
The presented research analyses a phenomenon which is considered ‘curious’ in contemporary American culture: women who write or read about male homosexual relations. Despite the phenomenon’s since the 1970s somewhat common character - popular genres such as Boys Love Manga or Slash Fan Fiction belong to the category - female cross-voyeurs are considered ‘strange’ and ‘unnatural’; much to the contrary of their counterpart, i.e., men who consider female homosexual intercourse as stimulating. From the perspective of Queer Theory, which discusses both our understanding of gender as well as our sexuality in general as socio-historical concepts, Carola Bauer researches the ‘different’ perception of these women and genres in American academic texts from the 1970s to the present. Methodologically a historical discourse analysis, the first part of this study focuses on the academic perception of female authors such as Mary Renault and Marguerite Yourcenar, who specialised in depicting homosexual romances in their historical novel - a curiosum which up until today is subject to much speculation within American literary studies. The second part of this study discusses Slash Fiction, a subgenre of Fan Fiction, in which mostly female fans imagine their favourite male characters from TV or cinema productions in homosexual relationships. This genre, too, has been discussed to a disproportionally great extent within American Media Studies because, so it seems, the ‘normal female interest in men bonking’ is seen as requiring explanation. The final part of this study focuses on academic studies from America which discuss Boys Love Manga, Japanese girl comics which narrate homoerotic relationships. On the whole, this study aims to highlight reoccurring patterns in the depiction of ‘female cross-voyeurs’ within the USAs academic discourse since the 1970s to enable a somewhat directed discussion of research desiderata and problematic tendencies.

Lit Verlag Patriarchy after Patriarchy A1001071862
Since the second half of the 1980s social movements, which questioned the legitimacy of the hitherto seemingly stable systems of Kemalist Turkey and socialist Balkans, won ground. Political Islam struck Turkey; in the Balkan socialist countries the dams broke, and parliamentary democracies replaced monolithic socialist regimes. These processes have not been gender neutral. Therefore the central question is-after the abolition of patriarchy and the official installation of gender equality,-are patriarchy and female discrimination returning in the region through the backdoor, although in a modernized version?

Bloomsbury USA So Long a Letter A1071317988
Mariama Bâ's pioneering debut, So Long a Letter, captures the private lives of women in 1970s Senegal. Recently widowed, Ramatoulaye is required to take sole responsibility for the long mourning process of her late husband. A husband she has not seen in over four years - not after he married his second wife. In a letter to her friend, Ramatoulaye recalls both of their experiences as students impatient to change the world, as wives suffering in the private sphere of marriage, and as mothers witnessing the dangers of Westernisation. Undaunted by topics of polygamy, social castes, and religion, So Long a Letter is a novel rich with poetic prose and profound wisdom. 'Mariama Bâ is in a class of her own, conveying with real power and poetry a subtle, changing world of female experience.' Guardian 'The most deeply felt presentation of the female condition in African fiction.' Abiola Irele

GRIN Role-breaking and role-remaking in Angela Carter's "The Bloody Chamber" A1008680334
GRIN Role-breaking and role-remaking in Angela Carter's "The Bloody Chamber" A1008680334
Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1, Otto-von-Guericke-University Magdeburg (Institut für fremdsprachliche Philologien), course: Gothic Fiction, language: English, abstract: The attainment of female subjectivity in spite of female sexual maturation, the oppression of female sexuality, the passive role of females bound in the confines of marriage, and as accumulated property are some of the issues that Carter addresses in The Bloody Chamber within the framework of the fairytale genre. Angela Carter adopts Perrault¿s fairy-tale Bluebeard in her story The Bloody Chamber and transfers it into a feminist rewriting. She breaks through the prescribed role-understanding of women and men in society. Society defines women as being passive, men as being active in every domain of the everyday life. Angela Carter draws a picture against this stigmatization. She does not define women as being merely subversive; victims of male authority and simply fulfilling their role. She wants to show that women have the ability to gain independence and a free will by giving male qualities to her female characters or letting them not behave like society expects them to behave. In society men are said to be powerful and oppressing their wives. They show true qualities of masculinity and exploit their wife¿s innocence and naivety. Carter on the one hand portrays men as embodying this prescribed role, but also adds female qualities to their actions and behaviours, or being overpowered by their female counterparts. This paper shall show in how far Angela Carter adapts constructed role models, changes them or invents new ones. Therefore the paper is divided into two sections: The first gives a brief overview about the time period as this text is written against the background of the gothic era. The second part concentrates on The Bloody Chamber, which is first of all based on Perrault¿s Bluebeard story - to realize the differences to the original and understand their functions with the help of the before described background knowledge. Afterwards, an analysis of each character in the story should make clear the concept of Carter¿s role-breaking and role-remaking.
