Bloomsbury Academic Doctor Strange: A Decade of Dark Magic A1076626688
Bloomsbury presents Doctor Strange: A Decade of Dark Magic by Stuart Moore, read by Jason Lasky. Explore the Stories Behind the Legends Enter a world where reality bends, and magic reigns supreme. From psychedelic dimensions to counterculture cool, Doctor Strange was unlike anything else in comics. One of Marvel's most fascinating early characters, he began at the hands of co-creators Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, and his ethereal voyages through other dimensions made him an iconic figure in 1960s culture. From his first appearance in 1963, Strange captivated a wide range of readers. Over his first ten years, a succession of writers and artists—including Roy Thomas, Gene Colan, Gardner F. Fox, P. Craig Russell, Marie Severin, and notably Steve Englehart and Frank Brunner—expanded on Ditko's original mind-bending concepts. This entry in the MARVEL AGE OF COMICS explores Strange's changing roles as a mystic, super hero, and leader of a chaotic team called the Defenders, and the rise of his popularity, in parallel with the counterculture of the 1960s. This is a must-have for fans of Marvel's early era, pop culture history, and the stories that shaped a generation.
The revised and updated only authorised history of Hammer Films, the company, its leading figures, and a film-by-film analysis of the studio's entire output up to 2023's Doctor Jekyll. Now with new imagery throughout and continuing the story as Hammer came back from the dead in 2007 and began producing new horror films for a modern audience. Established in 1934, Hammer Films is one of the most renowned and prolific independent production companies in the world. Hammer's productions encompass almost every genre, but it remains best known for the groundbreaking reinvention of cinematic horror that was a phenomenon on both sides of the Atlantic in the 1950s. The unique formula that became known as Hammer Horror was perfected in such classics as The Curse of Frankenstein (1957), Dracula (1958) and The Mummy (1959). Over the next 20 years numerous sequels and similarly acclaimed films such as The Devil Rides Out (1968) made Hammer one of the most recognisable filmmaking brands in the world. The Hammer Story is the only authorised history of the company and was compiled with unlimited access to its archive. The book is lavishly illustrated with rare promotional material and previously unpublished photographs. Now with an additional 32 pages continuing the story of Hammer as it came back from the dead in 2007 and began producing new horror films for a modern audience, including: - Wake Wood (2009) - Hammer Films' first theatrical release for 30 years - Let Me In (2010) - directed by Matt Reeves - The Resident (2011) - starring Oscar-winner Hilary Swank and Hammer legend Sir Christopher Lee - The Woman in Black (2012) - starring Daniel Radcliffe - The Quiet Ones (2014) - starring Jared Harris - The Woman in Black: Angel of Death (2015) - starring Helen McCrory - The Lodge (2019) - directed by Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala

Where trust is given, ruin follows. - From the Divine Scriptures, V:12 Aurelie Chantelune was born to serve. Raised as a knight in a kingdom ravaged by demons, she's spent her life honing her blade, driven by the memory of the monsters who tore her family apart and by the knowledge that she's one of the few who can stop them. If Aurelie can claim her first kill, she'll inherit a legacy passed down through the Chantelune bloodline: a soulbond with Yuriel, an angel whose power is vital to her kingdom's survival. But when those she loves begin turning into the very monsters she's sworn to destroy, Aurelie is forced to seek help from the last place she ever imagined. Desperate, she forges a second and far more dangerous bond with Severin, a demon she can hardly trust, but who claims to know how to end the war for good. With their lives and fates entwined, Aurelie, Yuriel, and Severin must team up to hunt down a cure capable of turning demons back into humans. But the more they learn about one another and the deeper their relationships grow, the more Aurelie begins to question the war and her place in it. With both of her bonded on opposing sides, she'll have to make a choice: continue to stand with the angels, or risk everything by trusting a demon. The Wretched Divine is the heart-pounding adult debut from Sunday Times-bestselling author Adalyn Grace, about an ancient war between angels and demons, and the human knight determined to end it at any cost.

A global survey of 250 of the most creative women practicing interior design from the beginning of the twentieth century to the present day The history of womens involvement in interior design is rich and varied. It is a discipline where women enjoy an equal standing with their male counterparts, yet it is typically framed as a design practice especially suited to women, secondary to the heroic role of architect or furniture designer. This timely survey explores the ways in which women have shaped the built environment beyond the confines of the home, revealing their careers as true tastemakers of the twentieth and twenty-first century. Making Space shines a light on the diverse and influential work of 250 women who design interiors well-known, unsung, and emerging from more than 50 countries. The featured designers represent myriad styles, from flamboyant maximalism to artfully arranged minimalism. There are the big names, such as Rose Uniacke, Kelly Wearstler, and Brigette Romanek; pioneers, including Dorothy Draper, Sybil Colfax, and Elsie de Wolfe; and those who have been almost entirely written out of history. Beautifully designed and illustrated with hundreds of striking photographs, Making Space will inspire anyone who cares about the spaces within which they live. Designers featured include: Sophie Ashby, Sofía Aspe, Gae Aulenti, Kelly Behun, Madeleine Castaing, Sibyl Colefax, Athena Calderone, Ilse Crawford, Olayinka Dosekun-Adjei, Dorothy Draper, Nathalie and Virginie Droulers, Shahira Fahmy, Beata Heuman, Katie Lockhart, Yana Molodykh, Tekla Evelina Severin, and Pamela Shamshiri.
His haunting, impressionistic study of a man's slow corruption by jealousy, Emile Zola's The Beast Within (La Bete Humaine) is translated from the French with an introduction and notes by Roger Whitehouse in Penguin Classics. Roubaud is consumed by a jealous rage when he discovers a sordid secret about his young wife's past. The only way he can rest is by forcing her to help him murder the man involved, but there is a witness - Jacques Lantier, a fellow railway employee. Jacques, meanwhile, must contend with his own terrible impulses, for every time he sees a woman he feels the overwhelming desire to kill. In the company of Roubaud's wife, Severine, he finds peace briefly, yet his feelings for her soon bring disasterous consequences. A key work in the Rougon-Macquart cycle, The Beast Within is one of Zola's most dark and violent works - a tense thriller of political corruption and a graphic exploration of the criminal mind. Roger Whitehouse's vivid translation is accompanied by an introduction discussing Zola's depiction of the railways, politics and the legal system and the influence of the studies of criminology and the Jack the Ripper murders on his novel. This edition also includes a chronology, suggestions for further reading and notes. Emile Zola (1840-1902) was the leading figure in the French school of naturalistic fiction. His principal work, Les Rougon-Macquart, is a panorama of mid-19th century French life, in a cycle of 20 novels which Zola wrote over a period of 22 years, including Au Bonheur des Dames (1883), The Beast Within (1890), Nana (1880), and The Drinking Den (1877). If you enjoyed The Beast Within, you might like Zola's The Drinking Den, also available in Penguin Classics.
