SNR Audio The Return of Sherlock Holmes A1076461156
"'Holmes,' I cried.'Is it really you? Can it indeed be that you are alive? Is it possible that you succeeded in climbing out of that awful abyss?'" The Return of Sherlock Holmes (1905) was the first Holmes collection to be published since 1893, after his creator killed him off by having him plunge into the Reichenbach Falls while battling his nemesis, Professor Moriarty. Years later and in response to public demand, Conan Doyle resurrected the great detective in the thirteen tales that comprise this collection. From cryptic messages carved in childish code to the shadowy dealings of blackmailers, spies, and master criminals, Holmes and Dr. Watson plunge into mysteries that test the limits of deduction and loyalty alike. And Holmes is revealed as a man sharpened, not diminished, by his long absence—a man who has seen the world's darkness and returned with his intellect keener than ever. The stories included here are: - The Adventure of the Empty House - The Adventure of the Norwood Builder - The Adventure of the Dancing Men - The Adventure of the Solitary Cyclist - The Adventure of the Priory School - The Adventure of Black Peter - The Adventure of Charles Augustus Milverton - The Adventure of the Six Napoleons - The Adventure of the Three Students - The Adventure of the Golden Pince-Nez - The Adventure of the Missing Three-Quarter - The Adventure of Abbey Grange - The Adventure of the Second Stain Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859—1930) was born in Edinburgh, where he qualified as a doctor before going on to create Sherlock Holmes, one of the most vivid and enduring characters in English fiction. Holmes, whose talent for deduction was modelled on the skill of Doyle's professor, Dr. Joseph Bell, first appeared in the full-length novel, A Study in Scarlet, in 1887. While Doyle wrote other works of fiction and non-fiction, none of those captured the public's imagination in the same way as consulting detective Sherlock Holmes and his friend and chronicler, Dr. John Watson, who have become one of the most well-known detective duos in literature. Later in life, Doyle became a prominent public figure, known for his humanitarian campaigns and his controversial interest in spiritualism. His legacy endures in the enduring popularity of Sherlock Holmes and the countless adaptations inspired by his work. This audiobook is fully indexed. "The Final Problem" is a short story by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle featuring his detective character Sherlock Holmes. It was first published in Strand Magazine under the title "The Adventure of the Final Problem" in December 1893. It appears in book form as part of the collection The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes. This story, set in 1891, introduced Holmes's archenemy, the criminal mastermind Professor James Moriarty. Conan Doyle later ranked "The Final Problem" fourth on his personal list of the twelve best Holmes stories. Holmes arrives at Dr. John Watson's residence one evening in a somewhat agitated state and with grazed and bleeding knuckles. Much to Watson's surprise, he had apparently escaped three separate murder attempts that day after a visit from Professor Moriarty, who warned Holmes to withdraw from his pursuit of justice against him to avoid any regrettable outcome. First, just as he was turning a street corner, a cab suddenly rushed towards him and Holmes just managed to leap out of the way in time. Second, while Holmes was walking along the street, a brick fell from the roof of a house, just missing the detective. He then called the police to search the whole area but could not prove that it was anything other than an accident. Finally, on his way to Watson's house, he was attacked by a thug armed with a cosh. Holmes managed to overcome his assailant and handed him to the police but admitted that there was virtually no hope of proving that the man was in the employ of the criminal mastermind.

Bookstream Audiobooks The Return of Napoleon A1066803442
IN OCTOBER 1805, NAPOLEON'S FLEET WAS DEFEATED IN THE BATTLE OF TRAFALGAR. NOW HIS GHOST HAS RETURNED TO ENGLAND FOR THE CENTENARY OF THE BATTLE, INTENT ON WREAKING REVENGE ON THE DESCENDANTS OF ADMIRAL HORATIO NELSON AND ON ALL OF ENGLAND. The mother of the great-great-grandchildren of Admiral Nelson contacts Sherlock Holmes and asks him to come to her home, Victory Manor, in Gravesend to protect the Nelson Collection. The invaluable collection of artifacts is to be displayed during the one-hundredth anniversary celebrations of the Battle of Trafalgar. First, Dr. Watson comes to the manor and he meets not only the lovely children but also finds that something apparently supernatural is going on. Holmes assumes that some mad Frenchmen, intent on avenging Napoleon, are conspiring to wreak havoc on England and possibly threatening the children. Watson believes that something terrifying and occult may be at work. Neither are prepared for the true target of the Napoleonists, or of the Emperor's ghost. Another new story of Sherlock Holmes for readers who love The Canon, and English history, and who will forgive an element of the spine-tingling supernatural.

SAGA Egmont The Innocence of Father Brown (Unabridged) A1043960607
"Men may keep a sort of level of good, but no man has ever been able to keep on one level of evil. That road goes down and down." A rich, old man has been mysteriously stabbed, and no one can figure out how it happened. There is no weapon in sight, no signs. However, there is something strange going on with his dog… This collection of mystery short stories is interesting and constantly surprising. Like Sherlock Holmes, Father Brown is extremely smart and observant, although he leans on his intuition far more than Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's detective. Like Sherlock has Watson, Father Brown, too, has a companion: Flambeau. Who also happens to be a master thief.
