Der deutsche Jagdflieger Franz von Werra ist ein Mythos. Als Liebling der Nazipropaganda wird er 1940 im Süden von London abgeschossen und kommt in britische Kriegsgefangenschaft. Hier bricht er immer wieder aus, bis ihm die Flucht schliesslich gelingt und er nach einer abenteuerlichen Odyssee um die halbe Welt im April 1941 in Berlin eintrifft und von Hitler, Goebbels und Göring empfangen und gefeiert wird. Aber auch die Engländer waren fasziniert. 1957 kommt der britische Spielfilm »The one that got away« (»Einer kam durch«) in die internationalen Kinos, in dem der junge Hardy Krüger Franz von Werra als ebenso coolen wie charismatischen Mann auf der Flucht darstellt. Für Hardy Krüger der Beginn einer Weltkarriere. In Deutschland aber ist der Film umstritten: Nur zwölf Jahre nach dem Krieg wird Franz von Werra zum ersten positiven »Naziheld« der Filmgeschichte. Was damals in Deutschland niemand wusste: Franz von Werra war Schweizer, war 1915 als Säugling zusammen mit seiner Schwester Emma von einer verarmten Adelsfamilie – wie ein Gerücht bis heute sagt – nach Deutschland verkauft worden. In »The Escape Artist« folgt Wilfried Meichtry den Lebensspuren der Geschwister von Werra durch eine dramatisch sich verändernde Welt. Zugleich ist es die bewegende Geschichte einer aussergewöhnlichen Geschwisterliebe.
