Testurteil: "8.5/10"
Test: Einzeltest: HTC Desire S - Keeping Desire(S) in Check
Zitat: Pro: + Sturdy aluminum build
+ Acceptable battery life
+ Smooth user experience
Contra: - Lackluster camera capabilities
- No groundbreaking improvements
Judging the ´S´
The Desire S retains what we liked about the Desire - portability and performance. Just like its predecessor, it is small, fitted with an acceptable 3.7-inch screen, a standard 5-megapixel camera and a powerful processor. However, we have to question if there is really a need for the Desire S and how does it fit into the larger picture?
By "larger picture", we are referring to upcoming dual core handsets like the Samsung GALAXY S II and HTC Sensation. These will be Android 2.3 handsets as well, albeit with powerful processors and multimedia advantages. Like the Incredible S, there isn´t anything that is really all that groundbreaking with the Desire S. Aside from a couple of incremental tweaks and improvements, the handset is rather bland.
On the other hand if you overlook these factors, the Desire S has quite a fair bit to offer - the phone comes with a sturdy and likable HTC-eseque exterior, and a familiar HTC Sense experience. The industrial and classy look of the handset has already implemented on the HTC Legend, the Desire HD and the Incredible S so by showcasing it on the Desire S as well, HTC has further reinforced the importance of having functional yet snazzy handphone designs.
The 3.7-inch S-LCD screen makes mobile entertainment a bearable experience, which by the way, is further aided by built-in SRS enhancements. Furthermore, the phone is equipped with a 1GHz chip processor and 768MB RAM, both of which work in tandem to provide users with a speedy enough browsing experience with no lags encountered.
The only major dent in its performance is its lackluster camera abilities. While its battery life performance isn´t the best of the Android pack, it still manages to outperform its closest competitors.
With these factors in mind, what should one looking to buy a Desire S consider? If you are looking to upgrade from the Desire or an Android phone that was launched last year, we suggest that you wait out and weigh your options later in the year. Do take into consideration as well that most Android phones that were launched late last year can be upgraded to Android 2.3.
If you are looking for a HTC experience and happen to be choosing between a Desire S and Incredible S, you might want to look towards the former for a few reasons since both phones are almost identical in features - it is more affordable at S$688, comes with Android 2.3 out of the box and better battery life. That is if you don´t need a 4.0-inch touch screen or a 8-megapixel (but mediocre) camera.
