KNV Besorgung Medicine in Art A1013613468
This abundantly illustrated volume offers an exploration of the depictions of illness and healing in Western artworks that range from Egyptian wall carvings to medieval manuscripts, and from paintings and sculpture by the great masters of the Renaissance such as Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci to twentieth-century artists such as Matisse and Magritte. Thematic chapters cover the examination of patients and their various maladies including disabilities and mental illnesses; healing and medical treatments; and the sufferings of patients and their hopes for cures and recovery. Psychological anguish--as represented in The Expulsion of Adam and Eve by Masaccio and Munch's The Scream--is treated along with the physical manifestations of pain. This volume, the seventeenth in the popular Guide to Imagery series, offers analyses by both an art historian and a practicing physician who comment, respectively, on the cultural context in which specific artworks were created and the level of technical knowledge available at that time, an approach that makes for a fascinating look at a topic that has figured frequently in the Western artistic tradition.

Andy Gage was born in 1965 and murdered not long after by his stepfather. . . . It was no ordinary murder. Though the torture and abuse that killed him were real, Andy Gage's death wasn't. Only his soul actually died, and when it died, it broke in pieces. Then the pieces became souls in their own right, coinheritors of Andy Gage's life. . . . While Andy deals with the outside world, more than a hundred other souls share an imaginary house inside Andy's head, struggling to maintain an orderly coexistence: Aaron, the father figure; Adam, the mischievous teenager; Jake, the frightened little boy; Aunt Sam, the artist; Seferis, the defender; and Gideon, who wants to get rid of Andy and the others and run things on his own. Andy's new coworker, Penny Driver, is also a multiple personality, a fact that Penny is only partially aware of. When several of Penny's other souls ask Andy for help, Andy reluctantly agrees, setting in motion a chain of events that threatens to destroy the stability of the house. Now Andy and Penny must work together to uncover a terrible secret that Andy has been keeping . . . from himself.
Adam Fuss has been exploring the subject of water for more than thirty years and is perhaps best known for life-size photograms of this essential element. Here for the first time is a book dedicated solely to the theme of water in Fuss's oeuvre. Included here are pictures that are now iconic in the history of contemporary photography, such as the swimming snakes, the splashing newborn baby, and Fuss's studies of concentric circles created by drops. Alongside these are many unpublished images, all exquisitely reproduced. The primary influence for Fuss is the personal observation of nature - nature being the underlying subject of all his work. The pictures in this volume were chosen by the artist and are the direct manifestations of the interaction of water and light. The scientific precision with which he renders his subject using photographic materials achieves greater acuity and distinctiveness than one could achieve with a camera and traditional photo-based techniques. This unique working process has influences that date back to the 19th-century work of pioneers such as William Henry Fox Talbot, Eugène Atget and Anna Atkins.

Bloomsbury eBooks US A More Beautiful Question A1036741576
10TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION * REVISED AND UPDATED "A book everyone ought to read-without question."-ADAM GRANT To get better answers, we must first ask better questions. Warren Berger reveals how in this beloved guide, with hundreds of thousands of copies sold. In his groundbreaking A More Beautiful Question, now updated throughout, innovation expert Warren Berger proves that one of the most powerful tools for spurring change is also the most under-appreciated. Questioning-deeply, imaginatively, "beautifully"-can help us identify and solve problems, come up with ideas, and pursue fresh opportunities. But in an education and business culture devised to reward rote answers, questioning isn't encouraged-and, in fact, is sometimes barely tolerated. A More Beautiful Question champions that impulse for inquiry. Berger introduces surprising masters of questioning. He goes behind the scenes of industry-leading companies to show how the practice is baked into the organizational DNA. And he shares inspiring stories of artists, teachers, entrepreneurs, basement tinkerers, and social activists who transformed their lives and the world around them by starting with a "beautiful question."
Co-published with Museo Madre and Astrup Fearnley Museet, this book is the first comprehensive monograph of the Italian artist Isabella Ducrot. Ducrot uses both textiles and paper as a medium, which she has collected from her travels throughout Asia. The material, its flaws and qualities, become part of the image. Flower still lifes, landscapes, loving couples and garments are all part of Ducrot's vocabulary of themes-simple, yet all-encompassing. The book brings together more than 250 works from throughout Ducrot's career, spanning four decades, and features new scholarly essays by Adam D. Weinberg, Eva Fabbris & Marta Federici, T'ai Smith, Angela Tecce, Ginevra de Blasio and Jhumpa Lahiri. In addition, the book includes a selection of Isabella Ducrot's own writing, as well as an illustrated chronology of the life and work of the artist.Isabella Ducrot was born in 1931 in Naples. Her oeuvre is deeply rooted in her interest in fabrics, central to both her pictorial works and writings. Employing diverse media-including pencil, pastel, ink and watercolour-her works compress an array of cultural references, ranging philosophy, folklore and textile weaving.

Little, Brown Books for Young Readers Raised on Radio A1077255455
'Consistently entertaining... Splendid' Mail on Sunday 'Crammed with personal, often priceless insights about cut-throat life in the fast lane' Irish Times A massively entertaining oral biography of the golden era of critically derided yet monumentally popular radio rock, when Journey, Boston, REO Speedwagon, Toto, and more ruled the airwaves. Paul Rees's Raised on Radio is, remarkably, the first biography of AOR ('Album-Oriented Rock'), critically derided at the time but massively popular during its 1976-1986 heyday when artists such as Journey, Boston, Foreigner, Toto, REO Speedwagon, Heart, Pat Benatar, Bryan Adams, and Styx sold many millions of albums and toured stadiums. Today, those very same songs are streaming in record numbers and many of the artists continue to play to sellout audiences around the world. They may have been dismissed at the time as terminally uncool by elitist rock critics in thrall to punk and new wave, but their music was, and is still, the soundtrack to so many people's lives. For better or worse, AOR's prime movers lived life in the fast lane. Cocaine use was rampant, egos were unchecked, and intra-band fighting became par for the course. What's more, their influence stretches across generations and through the fabric of popular American music. AOR invented the power ballad, and the sound of it has travelled on through hair metal, pop rock, and right up to Taylor Swift. Raised on Radio is a stadium-sized, massively entertaining oral and pop-cultural history in the bestselling tradition of Meet Me in the Bathroom, Nothin' But a Good Time, and Please Kill Me, capturing a time and place that was as big, booming, and unabashed as the music that provided its soundtrack.

"A crisp, twisting tale in the hands of a writer in the bloom of his abundant talents." — Graydon Carter A gifted yet financially disadvantaged artist falls victim to the manipulative control of his wealthy, enigmatic Harvard roommate in this incendiary novel from the author of Beautiful Country—a piercing exploration of class, ambition, identity, and the perilous cost of reinvention in the tradition of Patricia Highsmith and Donna Tartt. The son of working-class Czech immigrants, Christopher “Atlas” Novotny is a talented painter who arrives at Harvard on a full scholarship. Raised amid hardship, he is unprepared for the privileged world introduced to him by his freshman roommate, Lucien Orsini-Conti. Born to wealthy European diplomats, Lucien plays the part of the confident, sophisticated bon vivant. Where Lucien is bold and brash, Atlas is timid and introverted. Growing up a lonely outsider, Atlas is insecure, impressionable, and in awe of his brilliant roommate. But is Lucien all that he seems? Sensing a willing disciple, Lucien introduces Atlas to a glittering new world of lavish parties and elite social clubs. When Atlas struggles to afford his new lifestyle, Lucien offers a solution, convincing the naïve artist to become a forger, passing off fakes to galleries and dealers. But Lucien’s charismatic facade conceals something darker and more sinister. As Lucien’s behavior grows increasingly unstable, Atlas is forced into escalating risks with devastating consequences. Drawing inspiration from the true crime stories of Christian Gerhartsreiter (a.k.a. “Clark Rockefeller”) and Adam Wheeler, Lucien is as darkly seductive and addictively readable as The Secret History, The Incendiaries, Creation Lake, and The Talented Mr. Ripley.

Frölich und Kaufmann Female Photographers Org: The Body Issue 15001194
