VDM Barlas, S: Visions of Aesthetics and Culture in Yeni Adam (N A1013257193
This book based on MA thesis of the author aims to examine the construction of art and aesthetic as objects of national identity construction in the early Republican Turkey covers a period between the mid 1930s and the 1940s.The futurist project of early Republican Turkey was based on a utopian republic of fine arts in which the artists had an agenda to serve the needs of the republic. Under the light of this perspective, this study mainly centered on the visual art(painting and sculpture)in Turkey by analysing an important weekly journal ''Yeni Adam''(New Man).Following the state''s building process, discussions on culture, tradition, and ideology were questioned by different groups of intellectuals and state authorities.Among the dominant discourse of the 1930s,Yeni Adam''s critical perspective on art and aesthetic in the concept of nation-state and Westernism went hand in hand with nationalism and modernism.Yeni Adam''s reshaping the Western cultural formation in the Turkish culture opened up a new path for art and aesthetics in which nationalism, social realism, and modernism coexisted.
Tectum Wissenschaftsverlag Modernist Visions in Taos A1021239568
Not long after her arrival in Taos, New Mexico, in 1917, the writer and celebrated salon hostess Mabel Dodge Luhan began to lure some of the most talented artists, writers and thinkers of her day to her new home. Soon Taos served as a counter center of American Modernism that was visited, among others, by the painters Georgia O’Keeffe; Marsden Hartley, John Marin, and Andrew Dasburg, the photographers Ansel Adams and Paul Strand, and the writers D.H. Lawrence, Thornton Wilder, Mary Austin and Willa Cather. All of those artists responded strongly to New Mexico’s spectacular natural and cultural environment and some of them even decided to settle permanently in New Mexico. The journey to Taos not only had an enduring influence on their artistic development but the direct confrontation with Native American and Hispanic cultures played a pivotal role in reformulating their identity as modernist artists. This book shows how the experience of the southwestern desert offered new ways of thinking about nature, culture and cultural difference and how Mabel Dodge Luhan and her modernist friends anticipated and influenced later currents in America’s artistic, intellectual and cultural development.

University of Chicago Pr. Woven Histories A1068293861
Richly illustrated volume exploring the inseparable histories of modernist abstraction and twentieth-century textiles. Published on the occasion of an exhibition curated by Lynne Cooke, Woven Histories offers a fresh and authoritative look at textiles--particularly weaving--as a major force in the evolution of abstraction. This richly illustrated volume features more than fifty creators whose work crosses divisions and hierarchies formerly segregating the fine arts from the applied arts and handicrafts. Woven Histories begins in the early twentieth century, rooting the abstract art of Sophie Taeuber-Arp in the applied arts and handicrafts, then features the interdisciplinary practices of Anni Albers, Sonia Delaunay, Liubov Popova, Varvara Stepanova, and others who sought to effect social change through fabrics for furnishings and apparel. Over the century, the intersection of textiles and abstraction engaged artists from Ed Rossbach, Kay Sekimachi, Ruth Asawa, Lenore Tawney, and Sheila Hicks to Rosemarie Trockel, Ellen Lesperance, Jeffrey Gibson, Igshaan Adams, and Liz Collins, whose textile-based works continue to shape this discourse. Including essays by distinguished art historians as well as reflections from contemporary artists, this ambitious project traces the intertwined histories of textiles and abstraction as vehicles through which artists probe urgent issues of our time.
California's fertile Salinas Valley is home to two families whose destinies are fruitfully, and fatally, intertwined. Over the generations, between the beginning of the twentieth century and the end of the First World War, the Trasks and the Hamiltons will helplessly replay the fall of Adam and Eve and the murderous rivalry of Cain and Abel. East of Eden was considered by Steinbeck to be his magnum opus, and its epic scope and memorable characters, exploring universal themes of love and identity, ensure it remains one of America's most enduring novels. This edition features a stunning new cover by renowned artist Bijou Karman.
The very first photographs of the nineteenth century were produced without the use of a camera. Today, having rediscovered camera-less techniques, a number of artists are using camera-less photography to create beautiful, startling images. Now available in an updated and fully revised edition, Shadow Catchers surveys the work of five leading practitioners - Pierre Cordier, Susan Derges, Adam Fuss, Garry Fabian Miller and Floris Neusüss - who, by casting shadows on light- sensitive paper or by chemically manipulating its surface, capture the presence of objects, figures or glowing light. The resulting pictures are consistently powerful, often with surreal effects and symbolic content. This is the first book to gather together the work of these key contemporary artists, revealing the technical processes and creative practices involved in their art. In an age of mass-produced imagery, Shadow Catchers offers a fascinating insight into a world of handcrafted photographs that are at once visually striking and intellectually stimulating.
