The history of the Western North Carolina Railroad is a tale like no other, filled with tragedy, heroism, brains, blood, sweat, tears, nitroglycerin and humor. Now a tourist mecca, the Great Smoky Mountains were a remote and inaccessible place until well after the Civil War. Using first enslaved and later convict labor the Western North Carolina Railroad and Murphy Branch connected the mountains with the remainder of the state by rail for the first time in 1891. The railroad brought commerce and tourism. Though its vital role was eventually eclipsed by the automobile, tourists and rail buffs continue to come to Bryson City to experience travel by steam train on the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad. Local authors Jacob Morgan Plott and Bob Plott tell the story of a line that refused to die.

La «Arcadia» (1598) fue la obra más leída del ya popular repertorio de Lope de Vega. Lope la compone en un momento decisivo de su vida y carrera: durante el destierro en Alba de Tormes. La obra responde a la función del Fénix en la corte del duque de Alba, pertenece al género pastoril y, según una tradición propia de este género, mezcla vida y literatura, invitando a ser leída en clave. De esta forma, la «Arcadia» narra tanto los amores del duque como los del propio poeta, pero esa mezcla y la estilización pastoril hacen sumamente difícil e incluso infructífera la tarea de buscar paralelos reales exactos a los acontecimientos del libro. Lope era además muy consciente de las posibilidades de ¿ascenso literario¿, de adquisición de prestigio profesional, que presentaba el género bucólico. Por eso utiliza todo tipo de estrategias para sustentar el valor de la poesía pastoril. Especialmente se preocupa de imitar abiertamente o de mencionar los modelos más prestigiosos con que contaba el género. Con ellos, Lope aprovechaba la rica tradición arcádica que además gozaba de especial éxito en España desde mediados de siglo. El estilo pastoril tenía importantes precedentes en la Antigüedad, lo que le convenía a un Lope que comenzaba a querer dignificar su imagen pública y a adornar su obra con alusiones eruditas. En suma, el prestigio clásico de la novela pastoril debió de ser uno de los factores centrales que llevó a Lope a elegirlo como marco genérico de su primer libro.
