R.B. Kitaj (1932-2007) ist eine der interessantesten Künstlerpersönlichkeiten des 20. Jahrhunderts. Bei Cleveland, Ohio, in eine russisch-jüdische Emigrantenfamilie hineingeboren, heuerte er mit 17 Jahren auf einem norwegischen Frachter an und fuhr fünf Jahre lang zur See. Ab 1951 studierte er u.a. in New York und Wien Malerei. Ein Stipendium des Royal College of Art brachte ihn nach London, wo er zum gefeierten Künstler wurde - und 1976 Kunstgeschichte schrieb: Als Kurator der Ausstellung The Human Clay in der Londoner Hayward Gallery prägte er den Begriff »School of London« für den Künstlerkreis um Francis Bacon, Frank Auerbach, Lucian Freud und Leon Kossoff. Beide sind nach ihrer Flucht aus Wien in London gestrandet: So entsteht 1946 die Marlborough Gallery in der Old Bond Street und zeigt erst einmal Meisterwerke des französischen Impressionismus – Degas, Renoir, Monet, van Gogh. Danach wendet man sich dem deutschen Expressionismus zu, den Malern des Bauhauses so-wie der österreichischen Moderne (Egon Schiele, Oskar Kokoschka). Auch Mark Rothko und zahllose andere große Künstler wie Francis Bacon, Henry Moore, Jackson Pollock wurden von Marlborough unter Vertrag genommen. 1960 kommt ein Galerie-Standort in New York hinzu. Nach ungemein erfolgreichen wie turbulenten Jahren spalten sich die Fischers ab und eröffnen 1972 in der Kings Street die Galerie Fischer Fine Art Ltd. (siehe Cover). Harrys Sohn, Wolfgang Georg, träumt von einem Schriftsteller-Leben, studiert aber auf Wunsch des Vaters Kunstgeschichte und kommt in der Folge nie mehr von der Galerie los. In seiner Autobiografie "Die Rückseite der Bilder", die auf umfangreichen Tagebüchern sowie Gesprächen mit Peter Stephan Jungk beruht, erzählt Wolfgang Georg Fischer freimütig, was man nirgends sonst erfährt: seine ganz persönliche Kunstgeschichte.
