This memoir is gentle, insightful, and spirited by turns. It offers glimpses of a lost fragment of Africa that has since been overcome by circumstance and conflict. Kivu still lives, but it lives now in memory. Amidst the chaos that followed independence from Belgium in 1960, Kivu was spared . . . and survived. It was a "little paradise" as strife and disorder drew ever nearer. Frederic Hunter sketches local characters, both whimsical and profound, probes the inanities of US Foreign Policy, and paints the darkness gathering beyond Kivu, forces that would inevitably overwhelm this quaint, quirky realm of hope and humanity. As a young Foreign Service officer, Frederic Hunter was assigned to the Congo in 1963, three years after independence. He expected to encounter heat, jungle, hardship, violence. Instead he found the Kivu, a kind of paradise, nestled among Rift Valley lakes. The climate was benign, the beauty extraordinary. It was peaceful, the people were splendid and got along. He lived in Bukavu, a town that occupied five peninsulas jutting into Lake Kivu. Furthermore, an African king lived atop the nearby green and often fog-bound mountains. This memoir lets you accompany these Kivu adventures. We get to know Hunter’s Number One Congolese colleague, a womanizing rogue. We meet local politicians who all attend a luncheon and discuss strategies for victory in the coming election—seemingly oblivious to the point that they were competing against one another for the post. There are expats: an American academic intoxicated by Africa, a missionary woman who has lost track of time. Hunter’s truck sank in a mud pit at night and he was soon surrounded by a herd of the most dangerous animals in Africa: hippos. Hunter risks more, however, when a local Kivu woman catches his eye and then steals his heart.

Sharp Ink Adventures of the Ojibbeway and Ioway Indians in England, France, and Belgium A1070561641
Adventures of the Ojibbeway and Ioway Indians in England, France, and Belgium records Catlin's staging and travels with Ojibwe and Iowa visitors through London, Paris, and Brussels, mixing anecdote, dialogue, ethnographic description, and theatrical reportage. It documents performances, public receptions, royal encounters, museums, urban spectacle, and the mutual astonishment produced when Indigenous North Americans confronted European modernity. Its style is expansive and self-justifying, characteristic of nineteenth-century travel writing, yet it also belongs to the literature of imperial display, where sympathy, curiosity, commerce, and racial assumption uneasily coexist. George Catlin was an American painter, ethnographer, and entrepreneur whose Indian Gallery sought to preserve and exhibit the cultures he believed were threatened by U.S. expansion. Having travelled widely in the 1830s among Plains and Great Lakes peoples, he fashioned himself as mediator between Native societies and Euro-American audiences. His book reflects that vocation, but also the pressures of exhibition finance, personal reputation, and humanitarian paternalism. This volume will reward readers interested in Indigenous-European encounters, transatlantic spectacle, and the moral ambiguities of ethnographic representation. It should be read neither as transparent testimony nor mere entertainment, but as a revealing document of contact, performance, and power.

Giant turtles, impossible ships, and tidal rivers ridden by a Drowned girl in search of a family in the latest in the bestselling Hugo and Nebula Award-Winning Wayward Children series from Seanan McGuire. Nadya had three mothers: the one who bore her, the country that poisoned her, and the one who adopted her. Nadya never considered herself less than whole, not until her adoptive parents fitted her with a prosthetic arm against her will, seeking to replace the one she'd been missing from birth. It was cumbersome; it was uncomfortable; it was wrong. It wasn't her. Frustrated and unable to express why, Nadya began to wander, until the day she fell through a door into Belyrreka, the Land Beneath the Lake--and found herself in a world of water, filled with child-eating amphibians, majestic giant turtles, and impossible ships that sailed as happily beneath the surface as on top. In Belyyreka, she found herself understood for who she was: a Drowned Girl, who had made her way to her real home, accepted by the river and its people. But even in Belyyreka, there are dangers, and trials, and Nadya would soon find herself fighting to keep hold of everything she had come to treasure.

There's a spark there, one that shocks her. Surprising her further, her sister and brother return, each of them holding their own secrets. The smart move would be for Piper to ignore them all but Cam unleashes emotions deep inside of her that she can't deny, making her yearn for something she doesn't understand. And her siblings...well, they need each other. Only when the secrets come out, it changes everything Piper thinks she knows about her family, herself...and Cam. Can she find a way to outrun the demons? The answer is closer than she thinksjust as the new life she craves may have already begun.
Soft Skull Press People from My Neighborhood A1060384462
Nominated for the 2021 Shirley Jackson Award From the author of the internationally bestselling Strange Weather in Tokyo, a collection of interlinking stories that masterfully blend the mundane and the mythical—"fairy tales in the best Brothers Grimm tradition: naïf, magical, and frequently veering into the macabre" (Financial Times). A bossy child who lives under a white cloth near a tree; a schoolgirl who keeps doll's brains in a desk drawer; an old man with two shadows, one docile and one rebellious; a diplomat no one has ever seen who goes fishing at an artificial lake no one has ever heard of. These are some of the inhabitants of People from My Neighborhood. In their lives, details of the local and everyday—the lunch menu at a tiny drinking place called the Love, the color and shape of the roof of the tax office—slip into accounts of duels, prophetic dreams, revolutions, and visitations from ghosts and gods. In twenty-six "palm of the hand" stories—fictions small enough to fit in the palm of one's hand and brief enough to allow for dipping in and out—Hiromi Kawakami creates a universe ruled by mystery and transformation.

Instant Sunday Times Bestseller "Mackie has assembled a gloriously repugnant cast—everyone here, apart from her rather sweet TikTok sleuth, is dreadful, but in a pleasurably awful way. . . . A dark, funny story of a very dysfunctional family.”—The Observer (London) “Ferociously entertaining.”—Good Housekeeping (UK) With the bite of The White Lotus and the family dynamics of Succession, What a Way to Go is an uproarious and satirical whodunnit about people behaving badly—and perhaps finally getting their just deserts—from the author of the mega-bestseller How to Kill Your Family. When Anthony Wistern died, he expected his family to make a bit more of a fuss about it. Especially after he’d died in such dramatic fashion: skewered by an exorbitantly expensive party decoration in the private lake of his Cotswold’s manor house at his sixtieth birthday party, surrounded by the people for whom he most loved flaunting his wealth. And now even death has disappointed him; instead of Heaven or Hell or an empty void, Anthony’s soul is stuck in a strange kind of purgatory while he tries to figure out who killed him—before he is finally released from this interminably exasperating waiting room. Olivia Wistern knows she should probably try to appear at least a little upset about her husband’s death, but she honestly can’t be bothered. As usual, he’s left behind an unbelievable mess—financially; socially, personally—that she’s going to have to clean up. Their four grown children will be of absolutely no help; she shouldn’t have let them become so hopelessly spoiled. And is it just her, or are the police and their “murder investigation” intentionally getting underfoot? There’s no shortage of people who hated Anthony, so can’t they look for a killer somewhere other than her house? While the Wisterns are more concerned about the fate of their money than the fate of their patriarch, one internet sleuth is highly interested in Anthony Wistern’s death. She isn’t about to let the opportunity to create a sure-to-be smash true crime podcast pass by, not when the murder was committed mere yards away, and not when she has her own history with the victim. She’ll make her name and her own fortune off Anthony’s death one way or another, whatever it takes. . . .

Tectum Wissenschaftsverlag No future without the past/Pas d'avenir sans le passé A1008151951
The Great Lakes Region in Central Africa with its vast endowment of natural resources is one of the richest regions in the world. During the last decades through massive crimes against humanity in Burundi, war and genocide in 1994 in Rwanda and long lasting wars in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, several million people were murdered and millions of people displaced. Rape is used as an important war strategy. With an interdisciplinary and holistic approach, thirty internationally renowned scientists and highly profiled members of civil society analyse the causes of these conflicts and discuss ways to contribute to peace building and democratisation. The role of international and local actors, the aims of organisations promoting human rights and of associations of women, youth and survivors were discussed. Overarching questions are: how to cope with the past, coming to justice, how to overcome trauma and ethnic stigmatisation, and how to contribute to the healing and reconciliation process.
