Freight movement is a vital and growing part of regional economy and urban transportation system. Though freight transportation has been surely of growing interest to transportation planners, it is costly and difficult to obtain freight data and develop freight models. Based on the literature and our previous research on freight transportation, this book describes a regional freight modeling system with a non-survey approach that offers an affordable and efficient way to estimate detailed freight flows from secondary data sources with reasonable accuracy. The freight data derived in the modeling system are available at low cost and easily updatable in comparison to expensive freight origin- destination survey. The estimated freight flow is loaded along with conventionally obtained passenger flow to simulate regional highway network performance. The approach has been implemented to estimate regional truck freight traffic flows in the five-county Los Angeles metropolitan area.

The conventional surveillance methods used in ITS to detect real-time traffic data, e.g. video image processing and inductive loops detection, have several shortcomings, such as limited coverage and high costs of implementation and maintenance. Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) offer the potential of providng real-time traffic data without these drawbacks. Hence, in the past decade, WSNs have been applied to ITS to improve the performance of ITS. Controlling traffic lights plays a key role in ITS. We investigate how to design methods and algorithms for adaptive traffic light control in a WSN-based ITS. We propose models and schemes for adaptive traffic light control for both isolated intersections and multiple intersections. The proposed approaches take advantage of real-time traffic information collected by WSNs to achieve high system throughput, low waiting time and few stops for the vehicles. We have implemented the proposed schemes on our testbed for Intelligent Services with WSNs, iSensNet to evaluate and demonstrate the performance. Our experimental results show that our approaches can deal with different traffic conditions in an effective manner.

Anthropogenic activities are the main causes that affect the natural geological distribution of heavy metals through pollution of the environment.Bioremediation for removal of toxic heavy metals from waste water is gaining much importance.In recent years, in the field of wastewater bioremediation, the search for low-cost biosorbents having high metal-binding capacities has intensified. The objective of this study was to focus on the elimination of chromium (a toxic heavy metal) from water by applying biosorption technique using Lallementia royleana seeds and Psyllium husk. According to the available literature, these plant materials have not been used as biosorbants before. These both are agricultural by-products and are abundantly cultivated throughout Asia. Their biosorption capacity was also compared to Aspergillus niger, which is a well known biosorbant. The optimum conditions for biosorption were determined as a function of biosorbent concentration, pH, temperature and contact time.

Flat-rate pricing for services is becoming more and more popular. At the same time, the occurrence of a flat-rate bias increases as well: Many customers choose flat-rate pricing even if pay-per-use pricing would have been less expensive for them. Although the degree of flat-rate bias varies, until now, no study has analyzed service characteristics that might influence its extent. In five studies combining three different approaches, Fabian Uhrich shows that customers‘ consumption goals with regard to a service have substantial impacts on their flat-rate choices: Consuming services to attain hedonic gratification leads to a significantly higher flat-rate bias than using services to fulfill utilitarian needs. The more hedonic a service, the higher the taxi-meter, insurance, and overestimation effects. However, more utilitarian value has no significant impact on the flat-rate bias. Thus, by increasing hedonic perceptions of their services, service providers could gain more flat-rate contract customers. In a subsequent step, Uhrich investigates the consequences of a flat-rate bias on customer loyalty. Whereas prior research has found no negative impact of flat-rate bias on customer loyalty, Uhrich‘s study provides a more differentiated perspective. A survival analysis of two-year transactional data of 21,490 Internet service provider customers reveals that flat-rate bias has a negative effect on churn but not on tariff switching. The expected lifetime of a flat-rate bias customer contract decreases with every overspent Euro by about 1 percent. The relationship between flat-rate bias and the Customer Lifetime Value (CLV) is inversely U-shaped. Low degrees of flat-rate bias increase the CLV while high degrees can reverse this effect. The results of an experimental survey among mobile telephony customers explain these discrepancies to prior findings by showing that the competitive position of a service provider moderates the consequences of flat-rate bias. While low-cost service providers only experience increased tariff switching, premium providers are confronted with an increased churn risk. Managers of premium service providers are therefore advised to carefully evaluate reactions of their flat-rate bias customer base and proactively manage customers with strong flat-rate bias. Low-cost providers, however, have no need for action and can benefit from flat-rates without the danger of churn. They should leverage the positive impact of service ‚hedonization‘ on the flat-rate bias to increase profits.
