Without doubt it was one of the toughest jobs. Faced with ruthless criminal, trigger-happy gunslingers and assorted desperados, the lawmen of the Old West tried, and sometimes died, in their efforts to bring some semblance of order to their towns and communities. There were Marshals, City Marshals and Constables who were employed by the local townspeople and whose authority was restricted to within the town or city limits. Then there were the County Sheriffs, who were elected by the citizens of the county, to keep the peace within the county, or the Texas Rangers and Arizona Rangers, who operated under the jurisdiction of their respective state governors and later US Marshals. The United States Marshals were appointed by the President of the United States and had the authority to operate anywhere in the USA and deal with federal crime. Each of these law enforcement officers employed their own deputies, all of whom had the same powers of enforcement. Some believed that former criminals would make the most effective lawmen. Consequently, in some cases notorious gunfighters were employed as town marshals to help bring law and order to some of the most lawless of towns. These lawmen had to deal with the likes of the Dalton Gang, the James Brothers and the Rufus Buck Gang who thought nothing of raping and murdering innocent people just for the hell of it. These outlaws would frequently hide in the Indian Territory where there was no law to extradite them. The only law outside of the Indian Territory was that of Judge Isaac Parker, who administered the rules with an iron fist; the gallows at Fort Smith laid testament to his work. The requirements needed to be a peace officer in the Wild West were often determined only by the individual's skill with a gun, and their courage. At times judgment was needed with only seconds to determine it, and that also meant that there was the odd occasion where justice and law never quite meant the same thing. Chancen zu nutzen und dabei auch Risiken einzugehen, ist der Kern unternehmerischen Handels überhaupt. Dennoch wird die Relevanz zur Installation wirkungsvoller strategischer Instrumente mit dem Ziel der Bekämpfung möglicher Risiken insbesondere in Internet-Unternehmen vor dem Hintergrund zahlreicher Insolvenzmeldungen in der New Economy aus der nahen Vergangenheit deutlich. Auf der anderen Seite zeigen rasant steigende Werte erfolgreicher Unternehmen dieser Branche, dass der konsequenten Wahrnehmung von Chancen ebenso große Beachtung zukommen sollte. Aus den vorstehenden Ausführungen resultiert der Bedarf an einem Beitrag, der in der Lage ist, geeignete strategische Systeme zum Umgang mit Chancen und Risiken für Internet-Unternehmen zu finden bzw. die Anwendbarkeit bestehender Konzepte für Unternehmen der New Economy zu prüfen. Die Entwicklung eines ersten Ansatzes ist die Zielsetzung der vorliegenden Arbeit. Der Verfasser verfolgt diesbezüglich die Absicht, anhand einer Auswahl geeigneter Instrumente fallbezogen eine beispielhafte Anwendung aufzuzeigen. Dabei fokussiert die Arbeit fast ausschließlich auf die von MICHAEL E. PORTER entwickelten Ansätze zum strategischen Management (zur Begründung siehe Abschnitt 2.2). Als Basis dienen drei Case Studies der Harvard Business School, aus denen Geschäftsmodelle, historische Entwicklungen sowie konkrete - das strategische Management beeinflussende - Umfeldbedingungen der Unternehmen Amazon.com, Sothebys.com und Staples.com hervorgehen. Mit Hilfe dieser Auswahl erfolgreicher und tendenziell fehlgeschlagener Geschäftsmodelle von Pureplayern einerseits, aber auch internetbasierter Spin-Offs bisher offline operierender Unternehmen andererseits, soll eine möglichst heterogene Aufnahme chancen- und risikorelevanter Aspekte gewährleistet sein. Gang der Untersuchung: Den vorstehenden Ausführungen zum aktuellen Problembezug und der Zielsetzung schließt sich im zweiten Abschnitt zunächst eine Erörterung der Begriffe Risiko, Strategisches Management und New Economy an. Ausgehend von den Case Studies erfolgt unter dem dritten Gliederungspunkt eine Darstellung grundlegender Instrumente und die exemplarische Identifikation sowie Analyse der den Unternehmensstrategien und relevanten Geschäftsfeldern inhärenten wesentlichen Chancen und Risiken. Im Anschluss hieran werden klassische Strategiekonzepte aufgezeigt, die dazu dienen können, den ausgemachten Chancen und Risiken effektiv und effizient zu begegnen. Der fünfte Abschnitt bereitet die Erkenntnisse, die sich aus dem Transfer klassischer Instrumente auf moderne Unternehmen ergeben, in einem Resümee auf, während der letzte Teil die Frage der Übertragbarkeit auf andere Bereiche der New Economy aufwirft und damit einen Anstoß für weitere Untersuchungsmöglichkeiten liefern soll. Die Niederschrift wurde im Erstgutachten vom Mitglied des Vorstandes eines DAX30-Unternehmens (Gastdozent an der Fachhochschule Gelsenkirchen und Betreuer der Diplomarbeit) mit der Note 1,7 bewertet.
