It´s hard to find a decent record player for around £150, but this LP60 checks in at just under £140 and it comes complete with USB functionality too and does a great job of turning your records into MP3s with just a few swift clicks. The sound quality when hooked up via USB is great, and we managed to get some extremely crisp recordings on our machine, even when we were using a fairly dusty LP. It´s the perfect machine to switch up your vinyls to MP3s, and it looks good doing it too. Recording is a simple and painfree experience if you´re after a quick fix, as all you need to do is hit the red button and just let the LP60 do all the rest. Job done.
The bad: - While the LP60 is sturdy enough, it´s a tad plastic-feeling, especially the buttons on the front. As a standalone record player, the build quality doesn´t rival vintage players, and the lack of a counterweight on the arm gives it quite a bit of jitter. As it sports a belt driven turntable, there´s always the risk of a fault - and there are lots of parts to set up, and potentially, lose. If you´re hooking up the turntable to a sound system by itself, the sound isn´t particularly great, and even with an amplifier, the lack of a counterweight means the arm skips a little - especially if you move the unit or touch the top. We´d say to leave it be. While Audacity is a great piece of software, it´s also not the most straightforward for the first-time user. You´ll have to tinker about with it to get the best sound quality you can, and actually using the application can be a troublesome affair. You´ll need to spend a bit of time getting acquainted with Audacity to make your recordings really sparkle, but for the occasional disc, you´ll be fine just hitting record. For the price, there´s no question that the Audio-Technica AT-LP60 is a great piece of kit. It´s perfect for turning your classic records into MP3s, and it´s also a great starting point if you´re interested in starting a collection. If you´re after a standalone turntable, we´d advise to look elsewhere, but for something to digitise your records, this is the perfect machine.
